Some authors cause me to "bust the queue" and jump into their new releases despite being somewhat along in a few others. So, imagine the fun when three of my favorites pop in the same week - John Grisham, Lee Child and this one.Interesting how the Bosch character in my mind has become Titus Welliver , the character who plays him in the Amazon series.First case I remember that Bosch, now acting as a private detective and unpaid "reserve" cop for the tiny San Fernando PD, is hired by a billionaire to find someone who may or may not exist. Tricky issue for Bosch is keeping this private work separate from the public -easier said than done. The book barrels along in linear fashion with Connelly's trademark twists and turns and clever plot. Like his last book he blends in a bit of the "Lincoln Lawyer" character (tough shaking the Matthew McConaughey mental image for this character as well) to great effect. As Harry's half brother the natural cop/attorney issue pulls one way; the family connection another for some interesting characterization. At any rate, a good example of what keeps this series at the top of the best seller lists!

In The Wrong Side of Goodbye, former LAPD detective Harry Bosch is hired as a private eye to find out whether a reclusive billionaire has an heir related to him by blood. Now well into his 80s, the man had left behind a pregnant underage Mexican girl “on the wrong side of goodbye” when he was a college student. Harry’s search will lead him into the heart of Chicano culture in Southern California. The investigation will also expose him and his teenage daughter to great danger, as the board members of the billionaire’s company seek to protect their access to wealth and power. Two mysteries, unfolding in tandemMeanwhile, Harry has been taken on as a volunteer reserve officer by the San Fernando Police Department to investigate cold cases. He has succeeded in linking a series of bold and brutal rapes through his usual dogged research. While he pursues the search for an heir to the billionaire’s fortune, Harry and his young female partner find themselves ever closer to identifying the rapist. Unlike so many other mystery novels, in which all the strands of the plot are tied together neatly in the end, the two cases unfold in tandem.Harry Bosch may be aging, but he’s still in fine formIn so many instances, long-running series of mystery novels lose steam after a time. But Michael Connelly’s work remains fresh and compelling even in the 19th novel of his Harry Bosch series. (He has also written ten other mysteries between 1992 and the present.) The Wrong Side of Goodbye is detective fiction at its best. It’s no mystery that Connelly is now producing for Amazon the third season of a television series based on the Harry Bosch novels.

Harry Bosch left the LAPD again before they could fire him over a minor infraction. Since then he has successfully sued for being illegally forced into retirement. Once again Bosch has set up his shingle as a private investigator, but at the same time he is working as an unpaid part-time detective in the town of San Fernando outside of Los Angeles. In his private investigator role, he is invited to meet an aging aviation billionaire, Whitney Vance, who has a proposition - find out if he has any surviving offspring who could become the heir to his huge fortune. At age 18 Vance had a relationship with a young Mexican girl called Vibiana Duarte, but soon after becoming pregnant she disappeared and Vance had never seen her again.Bosch quickly finds a lead that Vibiana had a son who was adopted out shortly after birth. This lead fades when Bosch finds that the son perished when he was shot down in a helicopter in Vietnam. As soon as he starts to find more leads Bosch realises that he is being followed by powerful parties who don't want any surviving relatives to be found. When his search takes a more dramatic and serious direction he turns for help and legal protection to his half-brother, Mickey Haller. At the same time, Bosch gets tied up almost full time with a major case for the small police force of San Fernando - a serial rapist who gains entry by cutting through the screen door of victims' houses. The hunt for the "Screen Cutter" heats up when more victims are identified and a criminal profile suggests that it is only a matter of time before the rapist also becomes a killer.Connelly showed his skills in weaving Bosch's investigatory skills between two totally different cases. It was certainly a change not to see him constantly doing battle with his police superiors. There is not much background about his personal life as his daughter Maddy is at college and only has a cameo role.Over the last year, I have been revisiting and enjoying several of Michael Connelly's earlier books. IMHO this one stands out as one of the best he has written and maintains his top place in US crime fiction and showcased Connelly's skills in keeping this long-running series alive. We will certainly see a lot more of Harry Bosch in the future.I was able to review this book now as it was published in Australia on 24 October 2016 and won't be released in the US until 1 November 2016. It certainly deserves to be in the bestsellers list leading up to the festive season.

Dr. Eric Manheimer's book "Twelve Patients:Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital is an amazing and very realistic view inside the most amazing health care system in the world. Bellevue Hospital is the flagship hospital of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation covering at least 11 major medical centers in the NYC metropolitan area. I had the privilege of working for Dr. Manheimer as Director of Obstetrics at Bellevue Hospital. Reading this book took me back to some of the most exciting, stimulating and challenging years of my career. It was an amazing experience working under Dr. Manheimer's tutelage as our Medical Director. His open door policy, genuine concern for his physicians and mostly his patients is palpable in this book. Eric (as he preferred us to call him) has medicine in his genes---his father practiced internal medicine, even making house calls into his late 80s. Eric often accompanied him on house calls as a child. As you will in this book, this is where he became "imprinted" with the "art of medicine." It is really uplifting to see a Medical Director of a huge system operate with true "esprit de corps" taking care of his patients and his faculty. You will get to discover and appreciate the complete transcection of society (national and international) that receives health care at Bellevue Hospital. You will see the inside mechanics of the oldest hospital in the US and one of the largest teaching hospitals today.I bought this book and took it on a weekend get-away with my family----what a mistake!!!!!! I had to fight my family off from taking this book from me----they too were wholly engrossed in the contents having "lived" Bellevue through me during my tenure there. Subsequently we have bought many more copies. As some who reads 2-3 novels a week, I give this book a 10/10!David Seubert, MD

I have always enjoyed non fiction books about medicine. While well written, I didn't enjoy this much. I guess the main problem was the patients the doctor selected to write about. I didn't find them very interesting and there was no continuity as the book progressed. I was fine for about the first 15% and after that just wanted it to end. I should have simply laid it aside, but instead struggled through it. I applaud the doctors outstanding career and appreciate all the good he accomplished, I'm sorry I didn't care much for the book.

In Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital (Grand Central Publishing/The Hatchette Group, 2013, 349 Pages, $9.99 Kindle edition) Dr. Eric Manheimer tells a story about the American health care system set in Bellevue Hospital, which is the oldest and largest hospital in the United States. As a public hospital it serves the needs of those populations not well-served by the huge infrastructure of America's hospital and larger medical industries. Through its vast doors come the immigrant and minority people who, for hundreds of years, have gathered in New York City for its challenging environment of work, wealth, and freedom, as well as providing a home for all who come. Riker's Island, the largest prison complex in the country provides a vast prison facility for those who comit crimes or are waiting trial for offenses ranging from simple drug arrests to the most horrendous of violent acts. The serial killer known as Son of Sam was imprisoned there for several years awaiting trial. The relationship between these two institutions and the communities surrounding them provides the context for this enormously engaging and challenging exploration of the American health care system at the nexus where it is most challenged. Using twelve patients, including himself, as examples, Manheimer explores the nooks and crannies of an over-challenged system to provide care for those most in need.In what amounts to a series of harrowing and inspiring case studies, he portrays the capacity of this system to meet the physical and emotional needs of those most in need of its powers. Skillfully using dialogue with his patients, colleagues, and family to explicate the stories he has to tell, Manheimer avoids the trap of jargon and stilted description bringing the cases to life through his own humanity and turning what might be cardboard stereotypes into people the reader cares about caught in situations that become real and compelling. Beneath each story lies the reality of grindingly difficult living conditions experienced by many who have suffered to get to the United States only to find themselves confronted by many of the same criminal elements they encountered at home, a system fragmenting to a halt under its own weight, and a country deeply divided about what to do with both criminals and immigrants. Early in the book, Manheimer comments, “PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) was made an official disease in 1980. That is 2700 years after Homer described the effects of war on warriors in his majestic Iliad.” Read the remainder of this review on my blog. If you decide to purchase it, please use the Amazon portal you find there or go to your local independent bookstore.

I never wanted this book to end. I am giving it to my primary care practitioners. He offers such insight into the roles that context plays in healthcare outcomes, where do we come from? how did we get here? what difference does it make? I know that doctors and practitioners are very busy these days and may not be particularly well paid. But these accounts of deep listening even when provoked are inspirational. This doctor connects his own lived experiences with his patients and his readers to build "swift trust" (or even slow trust). I think we could all benefit if we felt heard and in turn invested in truly listening to each other.

the case studies were very interesting. the author writes from a personal, caring viewpoint. I would want him as my doctor or have my family members cared for by this doctor. he demonstrates a caring and understanding of all people no matter what their station in life.
