A must read for parents of children of any age. Absolutely the best book I have been read on raising children. It explains how you talk to your child is so important, and gives you easy examples to follow. It explains how we talk to others affects how they act, and what we say and how we say it to our kids so often is not helpful. We need to ask them the right questions more instead of telling them what to do all the time. So much that I read in this book is “wow, that is so true, but I just never thought of it from that perspective”, it just makes so much sense!

all parents---it's a MUST read !!!! We have a bunch of kids being raised now that have a lack of gratitude for all they have, Even my kids, who are pretty wonderful, do not know how good they actually have it. Help your kids but being firm and kind. Give them really strong consequences for their inappropriate behavior....and stick to it!!!! Take away those phones, I pads, and anything they escape into. YOU are the parent--not them. If it's kinda rough now, it's only going to get worse...nip it in the bud!

This is a great book for all relationships. It's about communicating with respect, honor, dignity and purpose. At the same time for parents or teachers, there are myriad practical hands-on examples.

The first 25 pages or so make the case that today's families are more dispersed and isolated than they were pre-WWII, that our nation's growing affluence has led to self-indulgence, and that technological advances have dramatically increased isolation within nuclear families. The result of this shift is "American children at the onset of puberty (who) face and incredible smorgasbord of opportunities with a deficiency in capabilities. Self-confidence, self-validation, self-discipline, good judgment, and a sense of responsibility are all lacking..."The authors state that there are "four critical factors that demand our attention" networks, meaningful roles, on-the-job training for life, and parenting resources. Parenting resources is scarcely addressed at all, and networking is given just a couple of pages. The bulk of the book is about how to provide meaningful roles and on-the-job training for life by providing an apprenticeship in thinking and problem solving. The authors discuss how to understand and strenthen a child's perceptions/thought processes, how to communicate effectively with your children, and how to strengthen various life skills in a meaningful, real-life way.For me, this book is a real paradigm shift. I've read many books focused on a single aspect of this book - books about affluenza, family meetings, social skills, natural consequences, anxiety, parenting, even books about RDI (Relationship Development Intervention for Autistic Children, which is VERY MUCH in sync with this book), and so on. This book ties all of those facets together and shows how they are related and why they are important to equipping kids to deal productively and effectively with life in the real world. As I read, I realized that I often step in for my children in the name of expedience - pouring juice for them because I don't want them to spill it, choosing clothes for my daughter because what she chooses doesn't always match, regluing the notes on music flashcards I was making because my 3 year old slapped them on in a very crooked fashion. Now I am considering the unspoken messages of "you're incompetent" that my words and actions unwittingly send my kids. I am consciously trying to take advantage of real, meaningful situations that come up to help my kids perceive themselves as capable. And that is just one small gem in this book. The most helpful part of the book is the examples of families putting the author's ideas into practice in specific situations. I personally am having difficulty putting some of the theory into practice - I would have loved examples of how parents can coach elementary aged kids through a massive screaming fight, for example. All in all, one of my favorite books about raising children.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Stephen Glenn at a number of seminars and look forward to taking the Developing Capable People workshop so that I may lead parenting classes for our school district (check the research on test score improvement in school districts providing families with these skills). My only "complaint" is that I did not have access to this material while raising my own children. I DO raise 32 a year and have used the seven steps for developing capable people as the basis of my philosophy for teaching. Over the last 19 years there have been but a handful who did not respond to methods suggested in this book - two were diagnosed as having severe psychological disorders. It is NOT a cookie cutter solution to raising children, nor is there any inference that parents don't DO for their children. It is about HOW we do for them - it is a guide to help you hear yourself and THINK about how and what you communicate to your children. I don't subscribe to any philosophy that is extreme in either direction, and I never felt that message related in this book. What is HAS done is remind me that my job is to help a child see himself/herself as capable - to develop intrinsic motivation. It is a HUGE job today when so many young people see themselves as lacking in academic skills. While their parents undoubtedly love them, they are often ill equipped to effect change. This book provides such a well written, easily understood narrative that one cannot help but come away with a better sense of "how to" and a set of skills that will be useful, even if only a few steps are implemented. It is a book I give to every new parent as a gift, one that I will continue to purchase with my own money for ANY parent who struggles and is concerned about his/her child's well being. If I were emperess of the world, it would be required reading before taking a new baby home from the hospital (and certainly one for young single mothers choosing to raise their babies). I'm willing to step out and even suggest it be made mandatory for all educators too! Don't miss this book! I am about to purchase my 50th plus copy.

Great book if you struggle with communication it is a wonderful way of communicating with kids and teenagers to get them thinking and the work is less on you

Highly recommended by a professional who worked for 40 years as a counselor.

Explains the way to make your children responsible for their actions. If all parents had read this book, we wouldn’t have a generation of snowflakes.

Really enjoy reading the works of the old theologians and Pastors. John Wesley was one that sought for God, we get to see this struggle as we read his journal. Another thing about Wesley is that he did not try to act self-righteous, we see that he poured his heart out in honest seeking and searching for God and the Salvation that Christ brings. He shared his life and he shared his struggle and shared what mattered most to him. I highly Recommend this Book to anyone who wants to read and learn more about the life of John Wesley.

Although out of print, this is a must for anyone wanting a solid overview of Wesley's massive "Journal." Wesleyan study groups wanting to get the feel and tone his journals will consider this a must. Very good but not cumbersome. Highly recommended.

I use this while writing a book so it's accuracy that I wished.

I had no idea how persecuted a Christian could be in a civilized society. I've learned a lot about piety and suffering for one's faith. He was and is an inspiration to all Christians.

Fascinating life of dedication to the Lord.

I first read the journal of john wesley a few years ago and and have re read it since then.I was really impressed by the extent of the traveling that he undertook throughout England Ireland Scotland Wales Holland and America. His preaching in all sorts of weather often being abused and attacked by angry mobs. His observation of the society of his day. He had a keen interest in health and angry at the injustice of the society and medical men of his time.He was so impressed when he observed an electric machine being demonstrated that he purchased a few machines and trained people to operate these machines to be were used in the poor area of London. He also used the machine himself during his many travels and claimed that it be a wonderful device for health, he had never heard of it hurting either man nor beast. If you enjoy history and a glimpse into the life and observation that John Wesley was so good at entering in his Journal you will enjoy this book and be astounded at the difficulty of the travelling that he undertook in his lifetime. great man of God.

I thought it would have more about his sermons. I guess I'm not a big journal fan.

Has been a very interesting read and was what I was looking for. Although edited, it is in Wesley's own words.

Review

Dystopian novelette by Mikhail Bulgakov, written in Russian in 1925 as Sobachye serdtse. It was published posthumously in the West in 1968, both in Russian and in translation, and in the Soviet Union in 1987. The book is a satirical examination of one of the goals of the October Revolution of 1917: to create a new breed of man, uncorrupted by the past and above petit bourgeois concerns. In addressing this subject The Heart of a Dog savages the rigid Soviet mind-set, science fiction, and a pseudoscientific theory of the 1920s that held out the promise of sexual rejuvenation through surgical transplantation of monkey glands. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Mikhail Bulgakov’s book Heart of a Dog is a satire about the soviet people. Bulgakov uses allegory to present his thesis: The forceful conversion of the Russian people into Soviet citizens was unnatural and unsuccessful. The symbols Bulgakov used were a dog named Sharik (a symbol of the Russian people), and a professor named Dr. Preobrazhensky (a symbol for the soviet government). Sharik represents the Russian people in three ways: 1) Sharik was impoverished and on the verge of death, much like the Russian peasants in Tsarist Russia prior to the revolution. 2) Sharik was then forcibly transformed, similar to how the Russian people were forced to accept the new doctrine under the Soviet Union. And 3) in result of the procedure, Sharik became something he was not meant to be. Just like the Russian people became different after the government shift. Dr. Preobrazhensky represents the soviet government in two ways: 1) Dr. Preobrazhensky offered food and shelter to Sharik, like the Bolsheviks had offered prosperity to the people if the accepted their ideology. And 2) Dr. Preobrazhensky then performs a grotesque operation on Sharik in order to change him, much like the Soviet government had conducted purges in order to change views of the Russian people. That the change of the Russian people was drastic and unnatural. I personally loved the clever symbols he used through the book. Some were subtle, such as how Sharik prior to his transformation criticized the proletariat, the group of people whom communism favors. But then after he is transformed into a human he begins quoting Engels, the man who created socialistic theory with Karl Marx. In my opinion, Bulgakov made a clever satire in which he got an important message across. Bulgakov succeeded presenting a critical idea in an entertaining form of satire.

I read this book in my teen age and wanted to have a copy for occasional re-visit. My native language is not Russian so I never read it in original, though, but English translation does not do it right in representing the style of writing.I believe that this work is greatly misjudged and underestimated – if by nothing else then by the comments left by Amazon readers. Knowing history of this author and historical circumstances can help to understand it and see the layers of this quick read.Bulgakov’s focus is on people and humanity but he is not short in criticizing “new” socialist society introduced in large scale experiment post November of 1917 soviet revolution. I never found as concise critic of socialist experiment soviet style and pointing out what’s wrong with the way it was executed, as here – literally, one page says it all. Bulgakov is humanist, optimist without much hope left. His work represents that, universally and timelessly.

This is the adapted play, not the original novel, so please adjust the description accordingly, so other purchasers are aware of this. Additionally, my seller will not refund me the original shipping costs nor the return shipping costs as they "shipped the correct item according to ISBN" and Half.com wrote the review - they cannot change the review either. so, i'm out two shipping costs, and still did not get the correct gift! Totally sucks.

Mikhail Bulgakov is a master of the outlandish and the surreal. And this book is full of both. Just when you think Bulgakov can’t get any more outrageous, he surprises you with odd twists and turns. The novella begins with a charming tale of a stray dog but this is no Walt Disney tale, for this dog becomes the pet of a renowned Moscow professor of medicine who plants human glands into the dog’s body and the dog becomes a monstrosity. Communism has presented itself to the world as a scientific political theory and I felt like Bulgakov was trying to tell us that despite the science behind Communism, the brute aspects of humanity can’t be washed away. As a sub-human, part-dog creature, we see behaviors that are rude, boorish, violent, but all too human. Human nature, including the worst aspects of human nature, exists even after scientific Communism has taken over. The goal of creating a new breed of man, which was one of the goals of Communism, is impossible and backfires in the writing of Bulgakov. I am reminded of his masterpiece, the Master and Margarita, where the Communist outlaw God but they forgot to outlaw the Devil. The book was written at a time when there were physicians who were injecting patients with hormones or glands of sheep fetus or monkey gonads to bring about everlasting youth or sexual stamina. Bulgakov takes this theme and runs with it.The dog Sharik becomes the human Sharikov, and as such becomes the image of the dull intelligence, short temper, crudeness, non-verbal, non-rationalizing, violent, prejudicial, of the worst group of lower class, lower income persons. Bulgakov would have us see that the Communist experiment can allow this type of person to gain power and influence and to be very socially destructive in their actions. Moscow must have been chaos in the 1930’s as one complete political and economic system is being replaced by another, and thus there is much room for human brutes to rise in a totalitarian system that allowed no dissent.I don’t want to give the impression that the book is all ideology, since in fact, it is highly inventive, entertaining, and outrageously satiric. The scenes are vivid and well written, easily imagined. I recommend this short book. It reminded me of the George Orwell’s Animal Farm mixed with Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. I know other reviewers have made this comparison but it is a great description of the book to someone who has not yet read it.
