The book itself is good so far, practical and applicable. I am mainly writing this review to warn students not to bother buying this book new. I read that it came with a disc, and that I should buy it new or the disc may be used or missing. The included disc is just a 60 day trial of MS Project, not even enough to get through the semester. Whether your book comes with the disc or not you will still have to figure out another way to get the program.

NOT THE SAME as the 6th edition in US. There is a page at the front that describes the differences. The cases have all been changed to India specific ones. The body of the text seems similar with explanations about the concepts, but page numbers will be significantly different from US 6th edition. Also, the top of the pages do not list what chapter you are reading, making cross referencing or flipping to a section challenging. The paper is also very thin and not good for highlighting as it will bleed through. I have both books side by side.

As others have stated, this is a good overview for a survey level course in PM. It is repetitive, but I think that is understandable in a survey course textbook of this nature. I agree that the scenarios are a little out of date; for the cost of the sixth edition, these could have been updated. It is certainly easy to understand, but I wouldn't have pegged this as a graduate level text. If you don't need this as a requirement for a course, I wouldn't buy this as a self-study guide. It's far too expensive for an overview. As far as readability, it's an easy read for an introductory level course.

This book was a semi easy read (until the last few chapters), I think it would be more enjoyable in a classroom setting, I read the book for an online course and at times was rather hard to follow. I would not suggest this book unless you were taking a class on Project Management and this book was required. I'm certain their are much easier books to follow if you are doing self-study.

I'm only on Chapter 5, but I have cut off pages 263-276 (so far). Not good!Missed return deadline because I didn’t discover the issue in time. No one offered any type of restitution.

Content is really useful, but be careful, I got the Indian version. By the way, the is no significant difference between the International and Indian Version. So, don't care.

I purchased this book thinking it was the original version because the description did not stipulate otherwise, but instead realized once I started reading it that it was the Indian version so none of the case studies were applicable to my course. It would be nice if the seller would make it clear in the description that this is an international version for Indian companies. I wish I could return it, but it's too late now.

Really well written and east to follow. Lots of great case studies and highlights. Too bad page the sentence at the bottom of Page 574 is never finished. The facing page is Page 607. Not sure where the missing pages went. LOL. But, its a really good book overall. (paperback version)

The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism, by Naoki Higashida David Mitchell

Amazon.com Review

Author One-on-One: David Mitchell and Andrew Solomon David Mitchell is the international bestselling author of Cloud Atlas and four other novels.Andrew Solomon is the author of several books including Far From the Tree and The Noonday Demon. Andrew Solomon: Why do you think that such narratives from inside autism are so rare--and what do you think allowed Naoki Higashida to find a voice? David Mitchell: Autism comes in a bewildering and shifting array of shapes, severities, colors and sizes, as you of all writers know, Dr. Solomon, but the common denominator is a difficulty in communication. Naturally, this will impair the ability of a person with autism to compose narratives, for the same reason that deaf composers are thin on the ground, or blind portraitists. While not belittling the Herculean work Naoki and his tutors and parents did when he was learning to type, I also think he got a lucky genetic/neural break: the manifestation of Naoki's autism just happens to be of a type that (a) permitted a cogent communicator to develop behind his initial speechlessness, and (b) then did not entomb this communicator by preventing him from writing. This combination appears to be rare. AS: What, in your view, is the relationship between language and intelligence? How do autistic people who have no expressive language best manifest their intelligence? DM: It would be unwise to describe a relationship between two abstract nouns without having a decent intellectual grip on what those nouns are. Language, sure, the means by which we communicate: but intelligence is to definition what Teflon is to warm cooking oil. I feel most at home in the school that talks about 'intelligences' rather than intelligence in the singular, whereby intelligence is a fuzzy cluster of aptitudes: numerical, emotional, logical, abstract, artistic, 'common sense' – and linguistic. In this model, language is one subset of intelligence – and, Homo sapiens being the communicative, cooperative bunch that we are, rather a crucial one, for without linguistic intelligence it's hard to express (or even verify the existence of) the other types. I guess that people with autism who have no expressive language manifest their intelligence the same way you would if duct tape were put over your mouth and a 'Men in Black'-style memory zapper removed your ability to write: by identifying problems and solving them. I want a chocky bicky, but the cookie jar's too high: I'll get the stool and stand on it. Or, Dad's telling me I have to have my socks on before I can play on his iPhone, but I'd rather be barefoot: I'll pull the tops of my socks over my toes, so he can't say they aren't on, then I'll get the iPhone. Or, This game needs me to add 7+4: I'll input 12, no, that's no good, try 11, yep... AS: Naoki Higashida comes off as very charming, but describes being very difficult for his parents. Do you think that the slightly self-mocking humor he shows will give him an easier life than he'd have had without the charm? DM: Definitely. Humor is a delightful sensation, and an antidote to many ills. I feel that it is linked to wisdom, but I'm neither wise nor funny enough to have ever worked out quite how they intertwine. AS: As you translated this book from the Japanese, did you feel you could represent his voice much as it was in his native language? Did you find that there are Japanese ways of thinking that required as much translation from you and your wife as autistic ways required of the author? DM: Our goal was to write the book as Naoki would have done if he was a 13 year-old British kid with autism, rather than a 13 year-old Japanese kid with autism. Once we had identified that goal, many of the 1001 choices you make while translating became clear. Phrasal and lexical repetition is less of a vice in Japanese –- it's almost a virtue –- so varying Naoki's phrasing, while keeping the meaning, was a ball we had to keep our eyes on. Linguistic directness can come over as vulgar in Japanese, but this is more of a problem when Japanese is the Into language than when it is the Out Of language. The only other regular head-bender is the rendering of onomatopoeia, for which Japanese has a synaesthetic genius – not just animal sounds, but qualities of light, or texture, or motion. Those puzzles were fun, though AS: Higashida has written dream-like stories that punctuate the narrative. Can you say what functional or narrative purpose they serve in the book? DM: Their inclusion was, I guess, an idea of the book's original Japanese editor, for whom I can't speak. But for me they provide little coffee breaks from the Q&A, as well as showing that Naoki can write creatively and in slightly different styles. The story at the end is an attempt to show us neurotypicals what it would feel like if we couldn't communicate. The story is, in a way, The Reason I Jump but re-framed and re-hung in fictional form. They also prove that Naoki is capable of metaphor and analogy. AS: The book came out in its original form in Japan some years ago. Do you know what has happened to the author since the book was published? DM: Naoki has had a number of other books about autism published in Japan, both prior to and after Jump. He's now about 20, and he's doing okay. He receives invitations to talk about autism at various universities and institutions throughout Japan. This involves him reading 2a presentation aloud, and taking questions from the audience, which he answers by typing. This isn't easy for him, but he usually manages okay. In terms of public knowledge about autism, Europe is a decade behind the States, and Japan's about a decade behind us, and Naoki would view his role as that of an autism advocate, to close that gap. (I happen to know that in a city the size of Hiroshima, of well over a million people, there isn't a single doctor qualified to give a diagnosis of autism.)

Review

“One of the most remarkable books I’ve ever read. It’s truly moving, eye-opening, incredibly vivid.”—Jon Stewart, The Daily Show“Please don’t assume that The Reason I Jump is just another book for the crowded autism shelf. . . . This is an intimate book, one that brings readers right into an autistic mind—what it’s like without boundaries of time, why cues and prompts are necessary, and why it’s so impossible to hold someone else’s hand. Of course, there’s a wide range of behavior here; that’s why ‘on the spectrum’ has become such a popular phrase. But by listening to this voice, we can understand its echoes.”—Chicago Tribune (Editor’s Choice)“Amazing times a million.”—Whoopi Goldberg, People“The Reason I Jump is a Rosetta stone. . . . I had to keep reminding myself that the author was a thirteen-year-old boy when he wrote this . . . because the freshness of voice coexists with so much wisdom. This book takes about ninety minutes to read, and it will stretch your vision of what it is to be human.”—Andrew Solomon, The Times (U.K.)“Extraordinary, moving, and jeweled with epiphanies.”—The Boston Globe“Small but profound . . . [Naoki Higashida’s] startling, moving insights offer a rare look inside the autistic mind.”—Parade“Surely one of the most remarkable books yet to be featured in these pages . . . With about one in 88 children identified with an autism spectrum disorder, and family, friends, and educators hungry for information, this inspiring book’s continued success seems inevitable.”—Publishers Weekly  “We have our received ideas, we believe they correspond roughly to the way things are, then a book comes along that simply blows all this so-called knowledge out of the water. This is one of them. . . . An entry into another world.”—Daily Mail (U.K.)“Every page dismantles another preconception about autism. . . . Once you understand how Higashida managed to write this book, you lose your heart to him.”—New Statesman (U.K.)   “Astonishing. The Reason I Jump builds one of the strongest bridges yet constructed between the world of autism and the neurotypical world. . . . There are many more questions I’d like to ask Naoki, but the first words I’d say to him are ‘thank you.’”—The Sunday Times (U.K.)   “This is a guide to what it feels like to be autistic. . . . In Mitchell and Yoshida’s translation, [Higashida] comes across as a thoughtful writer with a lucid simplicity that is both childlike and lyrical. . . . Higashida is living proof of something we should all remember: in every autistic child, however cut off and distant they may outwardly seem, there resides a warm, beating heart.”—Financial Times (U.K.)   “Higashida’s child’s-eye view of autism is as much a winsome work of the imagination as it is a user’s manual for parents, carers and teachers. . . . This book gives us autism from the inside, as we have never seen it. . . . [Higashida] offers readers eloquent access into an almost entirely unknown world.”—The Independent (U.K.)“The Reason I Jump is a wise, beautiful, intimate and courageous explanation of autism as it is lived every day by one remarkable boy. Naoki Higashida takes us ‘behind the mirror’—his testimony should be read by parents, teachers, siblings, friends, and anybody who knows and loves an autistic person. I only wish I’d had this book to defend myself when I was Naoki’s age.”—Tim Page, author of Parallel Play and professor of journalism and music at the University of Southern California“[Higashida] illuminates his autism from within. . . . Anyone struggling to understand autism will be grateful for the book and translation.”—Kirkus Reviews

It was really hard for me to rate this book with a basic star rating. As a parent of an autistic child, I wanted this to be life changing, shocking and raw. I ended up feeling like this book raises as many questions as it does provide answers. It was somewhat hard for me to imagine that any child at the age of thirteen could manage to articulate their thoughts and ideas so clearly, and this led me to wondering if I were missing something in translation or if the thoughts were being restructured a bit by the interviewer.Still, there are a lot of answers to common questions in this book, about the whats and whys of Autism and how it affects the person who is living with it. I do think that if you are a parent looking for an answer, you must keep in mind that this book is only from the perspective of one child and may not reflect on what someone else is going through or has experienced with the disorder in its various forms. This is well written, thought provoking and makes you think about how we judge people with autism quite unfairly. I think it is worth a read no matter your situation. In the end, I decided on four stars for this book, because it was attention grabbing and it was different. I felt there were definite advantages to having an autistic person explain autism to those of us who do not live the experience directly every day.I won this book is a firstreads giveaway. My opinions are my own.

Dear,Naoki HigashidaI bought your book originally for a college class and began reading for pleasure after a long day at work. I knew Autism was a disability that most people look down on because I live with a younger brother on the spectrum. I was prepared to read the same information I’d seen in books my parents had purchased in the past to help them raise him to be a person who could survive in modern day society. I soon found out that I was completely wrong about this. “The Reason I Jump” was nothing compared to those books. Unlike my parent’s books, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this through every page turn. Print media written by someone that has Autism, seems more helpful in comparison to something written about Autism by someone who has never lived a day in a person with Autism’s shoes. In a media course I am currently taking at Corban University in Oregon, I have learned that the society in the United States has a transmission of culture with the media. We tend to pay attention to things that capture our attention at that very moment, instead of focusing on what is right in front of us. Our societies’ greatest concern is not helping people with Autism live to the fullest of their abilities, but to be how great can we make the next smartphone or tablet so we can live in a more lavish lifestyle. We should be living a lifestyle that is not conformed. Romans 12: 2 tells us, “And not be conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” This is a passage that speaks the truth about how we should live, which is that we must learn our priorities and help others in need, instead of helping ourselves, therefore, not being conformists to the media around us.Your amazing book helped opened my eyes in such a way that it has helped me form a better relationship with my brother. I can now understand why he does certain things throughout the day that naturally make other people confused. He and I can share moments and live lives fuller since I have read your book.God Bless,Crystal

I read a lot of books about autism because my brother is severely autistic. I am very thankful to Nagoki Higashida for answered questions that I have about my brother's behavior and the way that he thinks. And also answering some questions that had not even occurred to me! His voice came through this book as very genuine and I have recognized some of the same feelings in my brother as Nagoki Higashida. In fact I wish that my brother had the experience of being trained to use the special keyboard. So many things are locked inside for my brother but Nagoki been has let some of them out via the keyboard. My brother also jumps. He always does this just before he starts a walk. He also loves to walk in places filled with nature. He wanted to go to a park when I asked him where on our latest visit. I have read quite a few books written by Asperger's but this one by a boy who has autism rings home for me. My brother can speak but usually he does not initiate any conversation, he is limited to a few words of a reply. I can see the struggle that he goes through when he is trying to "grab" something to say.I was aware of the overload of senses but I didn't realize that the floors could be tilting for him. That must be why he touches the wall here and there trying to get some balance.I thought that the author really conveyed how regular people can hurt people with autism's feelings. I knew that from being with my brother. I have heard people talk about my brother in front of him and that is mean. I know the author would feel the same way. This book is very valuable for understanding autism and I wish that caregivers in group homes and others who work with people who have autism would read this book. When I read this book, I truly wanted more. I am hoping that there will be a place in the future where we can send out questions to you. I have so much more that I want to learn. If you have a family member who has autism please read this book.I received this book as a win from FirstReads but that in no way influenced my thoughts or feelings in the review.

I am a first year medical student and find that this is a great tool to use when for studying for practicals. For me, the two best features are:-The lines that point to structures only have numbers on them, with a small area of the page that says what those numbers correspond to. This makes it very easy to test yourself. The downside to this is that if it is your first exposure to the structures you're looking at, you'll be constantly looking at numbers and finding the corresponding name, which isn't as quick & easy as if the lines were labeled with the name of the structure. However, this is also why it's good to have some familiarity with the structures before using this book by, say, studying the first time with a regular anatomy book.-This being photographs of real bodies means that you see all of the tissue types in every image, and they are well labeled. I find it easier to remember what nerve or artery supplies a given muscle if I can see them both at the same time, which many regular texts don't do, at least not often enough. As another reviewer noted and as I have alluded to, this should be used in conjunction with another anatomy book. Use a standard one to learn the structures and concepts, and then use this one to help you identify it on a real cadaver. Plus, it's always good to see things more than once. I use the Thieme Atlas of Anatomy as my primary atlas and love it. It's a relative newcomer, so you don't hear about it as often as the established giants like Netter and Grant's, but I think it's superior to either of them. The art work is incredible (better than Netter) and it includes some occasional extras peppered throughout, like small radiographs and sidenotes. This is not a waste of money only to be purchased if you don't go to lab. The reality is that this book would be a waste of money if I had a labeled cadaver at home, at the cafe, in the little Chinese restaurant down the street, on the bus -- everywhere I can take this book to study. And speaking of labs, this book is very handy to have in the lab during dissection, as it is so well labeled and depicts images of exactly what you are doing.Don't make this your only anatomy text. If you are in an undergraduate level course with no cadavers, this is probably overkill; just get Thieme or something. But if you're using cadavers and especially if you're being tested using labeled cadavers, you should definitely buy this book.

If you're in gross anatomy and want the ability to see perfectly dissected cadavers with labels on EVERYTHING, this is the book you need. I used this as my lab away from lab when I couldn't spend hours and hours in the cadaver lab at school, I still had this book as the perfect companion to the course. I dont think any student taking gross anatomy for a med program, PA school, nursing school, or any other anatomy course could deny how amazing this book is for reference. I bought it so I can always have it available. If I decide to go into a surgical specialty this could be a great tool to have in my kit.

This text is a great resource for students in the medical profession as they go through anatomy in the cadaver labs. The pictures provided are of great quality and the reader is provided with numerous views of the body and the associated anatomical parts/structures. A nice feature of this book is that the tagged structures are usually tagged with the same identification number throughout the course of several photos so that the reader does not have to keep checking the key.As the student goes through the cadaver labs, as compared to studying this book, it is important that students using this text remember that the likelihood of their cadavers ending up as clean and neatly cut as the cadavers in the book pictures is very small. However, the book is still an essential resource in helping the student develop a picture of each structure and its orientation in their mind before they go to find it in the provided cadaver. Also, when the student is studying on their own, away from the cadaver, this text is a useful reminder of how the structure actually looks in the cadaver. As an example, an upperclassman in my program was a commuter and used this book as her study tool since she was unable to stay after class in the lab to study (She spoke quite highly this text in that regard).Definitely an essential reading/resource/tool for anatomy/cadaver labs in professional schools and undergraduate programs alike.

Normally I don't write reviews but this time I decided to do so. I'm doing a Certificate if Health Science (Intermediate level) and just curious about biology, anatomy and zoology. I have a big heavy detailed 1000+ pages book on A&P which is probably good for students of medical universities but too detailed for me. I started to search for a more comprehensive A&P book and found this atlas. It `s simply brilliant. Photos are in a very good quality and show all organs very clearly and actually you feel like being in a real med lab.You can see all organs in their original proportions and positions/locations in the body. I showed it to my friend doctors and people who are advanced in a human anatomy and they were impressed as well. They say that it's a precise and very informative atlas and can be used as a reference as well. I recommend this book to med student and doctors who don't have a facility to go to med lab or have a limited access and to everyone who are interested in a subject. I found comparing drawn pictures from A&P textbooks with photos from the Atlas very useful and it help me to learn the subject and pass exams. Big THANKS to the authors for the great job they done!

I am a first year medical student and this is the only book I use in my anatomy class. We are doing a full human body dissection and half of our grade is practical testing with structures tagged on 22 different cadavers. This book is great because it labels structures on real cadavers. I am more than happy with this purchase and highly suggest this book to any person dissecting a human body (serial killers not included).
