Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film - Updated Edition (Princeton Classics), by Carol J. Clover

Review

"[A] brilliant analysis of gender and its disturbances in modern horror films. . . . Bubbling away beneath Clover's multi-faceted readings of slasher, occult, and rape-revenge films is the question of what the viewer gets out of them. . . . [She] argues that most horror films are obsessed with feminism, playing out plots which climax with an image of (masculinized) female power and offering visual pleasures which are organized not around a mastering gaze, but around a more radical "victim-identified' look."---Linda Ruth Williams, Sight and Sound"Carol Clover's compelling [book] challenges simplistic assumptions about the relationship between gender and culture. . . . She suggests that the "low tradition' in horror movies possesses positive subversive potential, a space to explore gender ambiguity and transgress traditional boundaries of masculinity and femininity."---Andrea Walsh, The Boston Globe"Clover makes a convincing case for studying the pulp-pop excesses of 'exploitation' horror as a reflection of our psychic times."---Misha Berson, San Francisco Chronicle"Clover actually bothers (as few have done before) to go into the theaters, to sit with the horror fans, and to watch how they respond to what appears on screen."---Wendy Lesser, Washington Post"In her reading of both particular horror films and of film and gender theory, Clover does what every cultural critic hopes to: she calls into question our habits of seeing."---Ramona Naddaff, Artforum"Clover, takes the most extreme genre, horror flicks, seriously. There is no condescension in this significant and probing discussion of psychology and sexuality and their role in lurid fantasy."---Desmond Ryan, Philadelphia Inquirer"Fascinating, Clover has shown how the allegedly naïve makers of crude films have done something more schooled directors have difficulty doing - creating females with whom male veiwers are quite prepared to identify with on the most profound levels" (The Modern Review)"It's easy to see why this book is considered such a landmark in film analysis."---Rod Lott, Flick Attack,

Gender In The Modern Horror Film. Do the pleasures of horror movies really begin and end in sadism? So the public discussion of film assumes, and so film theory claims. Carol Clover argues, however, that these films work mainly to engage the viewer in the plight of the victim-hero - the figure, often a female, who suffers pain and fright but eventually rises to vanquish the forces of oppression.

Holy frijoles, this book presents an intriguing view of gender challenges in the tradition of horror flicks. Though Clover's primary focus is on the 70s/80s era of slasher films, it's interesting to see her ideas still at play and even extended--that this book itself has helped evolve the horror genre. Maybe it hasn't evolved in the post positive of directions, but we ARE talking horror, people, and Clover's analyses lay a spectacular groundwork of gender challenges and sexual incapabilities that drive so many films. While her ideas about the Final Girl, the female who survives and sometimes even succeeds against the killer and represents the female victim of the movie viewers as well, is what put this book on the map, Clover also examines quite adeptly possession films, rape-revenge, and also the assaulting perspective of horror films. A fascinating read.

Men, Women, and Chainsaws is a film theory book that I've heard referenced since I've been getting more interested in gender and horror. I couldn't get it for years because it was out of print and/or super expensive, but now it's reprinted and accessible. I was daunted at first because I know from literature that theory books aren't always the most entertaining read, but the majority of the book is easily readable and engaging. Carol Clover lays out the formulas for three different horror subgenres and references numerous films (mostly in the 70's) to support her claims as well as other film theorists, Freud, 17th and 18th century views of gender, among others. The first chapter, focuses on the formula for slasher films. The villains are typically frozen in development in some way like Michael Meyers or have some sort of muddled sexuality like Leatherface. Most of them have an overbearing mother or some sort of obsession with their mother like Norman Bates. Their choice of weapons are knives and chainsaws instead of guns. Their victims can be male or female, usually young adults, but the final one is always female. This final girl is more aware of her surroundings, less distracted, and usually romantically unavailable. Clover theorizes that she's more masculine so the male audience can relate more to her than the other more feminine and frivolous teen victims. Sometimes the final girls only survive by sheer chance, but others survive due to fighting back. Clover calls her the victim-hero because she suffers through the whole film watching her friends die, being hunted, and knowing that she's being hunted. Looking at this formula in the present, I see plenty of films that follow it, but in recent years, many break out of or mock this formula like Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Cabin in the Woods. The second chapter illustrates the formula for possession films. The person (or thing in the case of Christine) possessed is almost always female because they are more vulnerable to the supernatural and underneath all their decency, they still could become witches. They are usually possessed by male entities and act in horrific ways outside of how women should act, like grotesque sexuality and foul language. These possession stories are never actually about the women being possessed, but about what that possession means to a man in the situation. I don't think I realized this was a feature in every film in this subgenre and it makes sense why it's one of my least favorites. The women are violated and essentially raped, only to serve as a journey for the man on the outside rather than one for that woman. A prime example is The Exorcist where Reagan and her possession serve as a spiritual epiphany for Father Merrim in his crisis of faith while Reagan remembers nothing of her ordeal. I haven't seen a whole lot of change in this genre in recent years. The possessed tend to be more violent rather than sexual, but the possession as a vehicle for male character and plot development still happens all the time. The third chapter focuses on rape revenge films, which is a genre I'm honestly not very familiar will. Clover talks about how along with the gender conflict, a country and city conflict that goes along with that. The country folk are poor, unhealthy, uneducated, and unemployed. They might also have sexually depraved relationships with animals or their own family members. They blame their improverished situation on city people due to industrialization destroying nature and big businesses crushing their smaller businesses. The city people are either women or considered feminized men. The country people attack and violate city people for revenge, only to have those people come back to exact revenge as well. The lower versions of rape revenge films have women exacting their own revenge, which gives them agency and power. It also often criticizes the justice system that rarely works in favor of these rape victimes. The more celebrated versions like The Accused have the justice system come out in their favor and obscure that criticism. The remade versions of these films seem to be glossier versions that don't bring anything new to a modern audience. Although these films can be exploitative and uncomfortable to watch, I have renewed interest in watching them because of Clover's analysis. The last chapter is about meta horror films. More obviously meta films like New Nightmare, Scream, and Cabin in the Woods hadn't been made yet, so Clover's focus is the film Peeping Tom. Mark films his female victims while he kills them, making the audience view the scene through his eyes. He recreates scenes reflected from his own abusive childhood. Clover puts forth that this film critiques the masochistic viewer looking at the sadistic filmmaker's violent production. This chapter as a whole is more scattered and less focused, mostly because of the state of meta horror at the time. I would love to see her or anyone else take a second analytic look at these same (plus more) genres and analyze how they have changed or stayed the same.Men, Women, and Chainsaws has an illuminating look at horror genres still alive and well today. Clover has some strong arguments and views films and subgenres. I don't always agree with her rationales or citations. I don't agree with Freud's psychoanalytic theories and I don't think a single sex model (where men and women are essentially the same gender) is an accurate representation of cinema. She talks a lot about how cameras and weapons of various types are phalluses that the final girls then take for power at the end of the films. In some cases, like the sexually charged scene in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 between Leatherface and Stretch, I can see how it would be considered to be that, but I think it's overreaching at times. Overall, this film theory book offers a solid breakdown and analysis of different subgenres and how men and women are treated in them.

Nothing against the content or writing-- the one star review is for the digital download of the AZW ebook format, which is incompatible with the Kindle Paperwhite, and will not download to the device.Viewing the book on a computer's Kindle app, the book is basically a PDF scan (the amazon AZW4 format is pdf-like, with heavy DRM restrictions ensuring it can't be converted to a more readable format). Because the ebook is a simple, image-based scan, quality is fairly low to keep the file-size down, so even if you do have a Kindle-style device that is compatible with the file format, it is still grainy and hard to read.

The print on Kindle version I received is so poor that I cannot read it.

A complex read, especially the chapter on rape-revenge films. An interesting analysis of slasher, possession and rape revenge films.

Useful and comprehensive; a must-read for film critics and anyone interested in the horror genre.

good read

The Facebook Effect provides an insider's view of what Facebook was like in the early days. One of the most interesting aspects of the story is how uncertain the success of the company was. At many points it seemed like the company bordered on the line of crisis, but Zuckerberg and his team were able to adapt and handle the challenges. The book is engaging as it tells the story. One of the more interesting stories was when one of the original owners of Facebook decided to not pay the bill for the Facebook servers. Tensions around this event ran high and the company was fortunate to survive this event unscathed. It seems this is the only novel which was granted behinds the scenes access to the actual story and provides some insight to Zuckerberg's thought process.I found the parts about the impact of Facebook on society to be less impressive as many of the insights seemed like common sense to me. It would have been nice to see more analysis of the role Facebook plays in society. Although it appears the goal of the book was to focus on the Facebook story.

This book is a tale of a company born a few years ago that has taken the global business and technology by storm. Whats even more fascinating is that it was created and continues to be run by a bunch of kids in their mid twenties,What I really liked about this book is that it focused strictly on the business and professional aspect and didn't bother to get involved in any of the politics or gossip. It seems that whenever there is a quick success story that comes in a short period of time, many people tend to try and dig dirt on the company and/or its founders. While it is true that there were issues behind the scenes and some disgruntled partners or ex-partners, the reader simply gets a look inside the growth of this company and how it transformed online social networking into something that people cannot live without.I highly recommend this book to anyone that is interested in general business, technology or simply inspiration and motivation. You will definitely not be disappointed.

What features of facebook led to its instant success, and who deserves the credit? Why has facebook continued to grow while other social networks faltered at earlier stages? How did facebook make money at various stages of development? What caused facebook's various missteps? Does facebook really care about privacy? David Fitzpatrick gives convincing answers to these questions that have been hotly debated among users for years. The book suffers at times from gushy editorializing, but overall the reporting is balanced (with a few exceptions), and readers can weigh the facts on their own.Fitzpatrick identifies several features that differentiated facebook from the rest. School networks offered a controlled community. Users felt comfortable projecting their true identities online in this setting. The site was easy to use, and didn't try to do too much too soon. Long-run growth was always a stronger priority than short-term ad revenue. Mark Zuckerberg's immaturity during his college age years is clear, but he ultimately nails the most important strategic decisions. He was not a mere caretaker of a simple idea at the right time. The book touches on the personal conflicts made famous by the Social Network movie. The motives behind Eduardo Saverin's sacking are carefully reported. In contrast, key facts are missing in Fitzpatrick's treatment of the Winklevoss/Narendra ConnectU lawsuit. Fitzpatrick makes a convincing case that ConnectU's business plan was inferior to thefacebook's, but he glosses over how Zuckerberg sabotaged their site for months. Zuckerberg's AOL IMs from this era (referenced in the 12/30/10 NYT) reveal he viewed them as a competitor, and this calls into question Fitzpatrick's judgment that Zuckerberg was merely guilty of being "rude" and "uncooperative." Future editions of the book should incorporate more accurate information about the case.Another weakness is the book's failure to address contradictions in facebook's views on privacy. For example, he asserts in the prologue that facebook "has always been explicitly conceived and engineered by Zuckerberg and colleagues as a tool to enhance your relations with your real-world friends" But later we learn that Zuckerberg is always pushing people to be more transparent, and that voyeurism was part of facebook's success from the beginning at Harvard. Who seriously believes facebook has never encouraged voyeurism outside of your circle of real friends?Yet the book's most lasting impression is Zuckerberg's resolve in prioritizing facebook's utility over its profits. Knowing how close friend Sean Parker lost control of his past ventures, Zuckerberg is careful not to let future investors take control of his baby. Understanding this is also crucial to understanding the controversy behind facebook's delays in going public. Without Zuckerberg's patience, facebook would have been far less useful as a tool of Viacom, News Corp, Yahoo, Microsoft, or Wall Street. For this, Zuckerberg is worthy of the rosy picture painted in this book, despite his sins.

First I saw the movie "Social Network". But as I was watching it I kept telling myself "Self... something is wrong here. There is NO WAY that a person could be such a monumental JERK as portrayed in the movie, and build a company with a perceived value of $100 billion. NOBODY would work for him long enough to get it that far."So then I started investigating and was glad I found the reviews on THIS book. Why it has not been made into a movie is a mystery. The numbers and growth rates that are reported here are simply incredible. The main premise for Mark Zuckerberg's creation still seems to be pure, from what I can tell with reports that followed the public offering of stock. This book truly humanizes the people behind Facebook -- which I do not use, by the way.

This book is a good read for Facebook Fans or just plain tech fans. The story of how Facebook started at Harvard is fascinating. The only problem with this book is when it was written. I'll bet there is one that was written later out there. This turned out to be an excellent time to read this book because during the time I was reading it Facebook bought WhatsAp and therefore there was a lot about Facebook in the news. Reading this book gave me a better understanding of the news articles. If you are at all interested and use Facebook yourself I highly recommend reading this.

I read this at 3:12 a.m., thinking anything Kooser-related would allow me a return to peaceful sleep ("splitting an order" or "at the cancer clinic" allows for grace without pity). But I underestimated Harrison, whose dark reality would keep a drunkard awake. Jim, please stop making me face reality. Ted, thank you for providing the grace to accept it. Anyway , it 's nearly 5 a.m. now, one potential final hour before hot tea. So I will move on to some modernist like Auden or Eliot where the words don't cut as deeply.

I love this volume of poetry. The work springs from simple daily moments that will make you want to leap out into the back yard before you miss something. Lively, touching, funny, insightful. I love that these two men were friends who wrote poems back and forth and I am privileged to get a little glimpse of that friendship. From the author of: Unexpected Innocence

Just when you begin to fear that text messaging and email have replaced real writing, that slogans and catch-phrases have replaced real thought, and that no one gives a damn about the English language any more... this wonderful book comes along to restore your faith and spirit! Before I began to read it, it seemed odd to me that none of the poems are attributed. Once I started reading, I realized immediately that this was a wise and marvelous choice by these two. As one of them notes, "Everyone gets tired of this continuing cult of the personality... This book is an assertion in favor of poetry and against credentials."I am enormously grateful to these two superb writers for allowing us to share a glimpse into their friendship and their thoughts. I'm giving it to everyone I know who deserves it.

I own both Braided Creek and Winter Morning Walks, myself, and have found them so engaging I sent them to my brother-in-law who also loves poetry. He is completely enchanted with them. The words 'engaging' and 'enchanted' don't do justice to what the poems give to and ask of a reader, but do describe the feeling a reader can have when addressing the poems of both of these authors - so different, but so articulate and skilled.

"Braided Creek" reads like a series of aphorisms. These very short verses are arranged in an arresting sequence that is a mix of feelings, observations, experience, reflections and impressions. I had expected them to be a bit disjointed, since they were done by two people some distance apart, but Harrison and Kooser have a kind of remote telepathy, almost like they were reading each other's minds and changed one body for another.

What could be better than correspondence between two great poets? Correspondence in poetry. I adore this book. The poetry is wonderful and you can feel the warmth shared by these wonderful men in every stanza.

While walking, golfing, watching baseball, drinking wine with my wife, playing with my dogs, this book is always always in my back pocket.

Beautiful little snippets of poetry, but I would have been glad to have the respective writers identified.
