I try to be very fair to business books, but I didn't even finish reading this one because it was so elementary and ridiculous. I almost vomited after reading the words "execute" and "execution" a hundred times in the first chapter.This is one of many books written by formerly successful business people who feel the need (for posterity and/or outright arrogance) to take a five-page concept and spread it out over a few hundred pages.If you can master this simple principle, you don't need to read this book: Once you have a great plan or idea, you need to implement it effectively. To not effectively implement your great plan or idea, is a waste of a good plan or idea.That's it folks. The rest of this book is double-talk and business "war stories". The rest of the book is so pointless, you'd be better off spending the time with your family, or reading a different book.

This is severely dated at this point, and their knowledge of how IBM was run under Sam Palmisano is woefully incorrect. If you can ignore the first 3rd of the book, the other two thirds focusing on strategy and people processes are great. They all have to be in sync to move forward, but gone are the days of the line manager being pushed down from above to make all the decisions, instead it is up to the players to make the decisions.

For the Christmas Holidays, as we were packing the ski stuff from the basement before we left to VT, I chanced upon some books lying there, and noticed the one titled 'Execution,' by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan which I had bought almost 8 years ago but never got around to reading it. On a whim, I decided to take it with me and ended up reading it through these holidays.A quick caveat to put aside. I do wish folks would not use company names as examples in books. The original one of these, "In Search of Excellence" by Tom Peters did that. So did Jim Collins in "Good to Great". And this book does it too. What happens is that the authors use some company as an example to cite either a good or a bad practice. And a decade has passed and things have changed (perhaps 180 degrees). And that induces a chuckle in addition to both dating the book and casting doubt on the claim.However, at least for this book, 'Execution', the above is only a caveat, since I found the book quite meaningful. The reason I perhaps did not read it when I first bought it many years ago is that it felt genuinely elementary. I was at the peak of my strategy work and when you are working on projects that are either reshaping a company or positioning oneself in new markets, the discipline of execution seems not only boring, but downright waste of time (not the importance of it mind you, but rather spending time thinking or reading about it).However, now that I have moved on from the strategy function myself and am in a line management role with accountability for business results and accountability for a team and partner-relationships to deliver those results, I view this book in an entirely new light!To share a personal reaction as I read this book ( a feeling I have not had since when I sat for my twelfth grade board examination!) - when I thought about implementing the ideas that Larry and Ram were talking about in their book on Tuesday morning Jan 2nd when I return to work, my stomach tightens into a knot! The level of sustained focus, discipline, follow through, attention to detail they expect in execution is non-trivial to say the least. Again, conceptually easy to grasp; but quite daunting if one thinks about putting them into real practice on a sustained basis throughout an organization!Very briefly, they touch upon the strategic, people and operational processes as three core processes that are building blocks for execution and show how the three are related to each other. And through their experience and examples demonstrate how to implement each of these effectively. One particular insight that I liked that Larry made in particular was, 'just because an executive is good in her current job, does not mean she is ready or capable for the next'. Which is similar to what our Chairman says, "do the job you have been assigned, not your previous one."Of course with a background in engineering (and manufacturing to boot), this whole notion of execution and organizing to execute is not alien to me at all. And in reality, my immersion for a long time in strategic work was what I needed to be more lithe in my thinking. However executing by one self or with a small team in a localized way on a specific deterministic engineering problem is one challenge. But to do the same with large revenues and large teams at stake and working through your teams through other teams with high week-to-week dependence on market conditions is another challenge.This timely book was very worthwhile spending time with. Dated examples notwithstanding, one of the more immediately useful and relevant books in the business genre that I have read in a long time.

Bossidy and Charan dive into the critical gap of getting things done in this management classic. Focused on execution, the authors discuss the critical components for leadership within an execution/get stuff done environment. Pointing out the failures of hands off management, ivory tower thinking and micromanagement, the emphasis is on those critical elements that combine the what needs to be done and who needs to do it to execute on a business strategy or operational plan.The critical linking of strategy, operations and people is the role of the business leader, and in order to accomplish that critical mission, the leader must be meaningfully involved in those three elements - not micromanaging them, but leading them to efficient execution. The leader's most important job is the selection and appraising of the people in the organization, and this element should consume the bulk of their efforts and should never be delegated. The leader must embrace this role and thrive in it to ensure proper execution of the strategy and operations.The combination of people and strategy lead to an operating plan, in which the execution takes place. This plan needs to be realistic, ambitious, resourced, specific and accountable. The authors note that this piece is often the art that falls short - where the operating plan is divorced from the strategy and people - and the execution suffers.The book has critical questions and suggestions for the leader, and provides a platform for thought that is focused on getting things done rather than just the what and who theory of planning. An important read.

“Not everyone hates Iranians,” she assures me, putting down the paper. “People who hate just happen to be the loudest.”I loved, loved, loved this book, and this author. Highly recommend this laugh-out-funny and moving story of Zomorod (Cindy) Yousefzadeh, a girl from Iran who has spent several years, here and there, in America due to her father's engineering job.The time period is the late 70s, when a lot of people in America were hearing about Iran for the first time due to political strife and the taking of American hostages. I was exactly the same age as Zomorod during the period of time the story takes place. In Catholic School, we would turn toward the window, say the Pledge of Allegiance, and then take turns on who would lead the prayer for the hostages.Zomorod, like any kid, seeks to fit in, and is embarrassed by her parents. She has the added pressure of good English, but not knowing all the idioms, as well as parents who are different culturally from the other adults. And schoolmates who think she comes from a land of an animal she'd only ever seen in a zoo -- a camel.I found myself chuckling at several opportunities at Zomorod's observations and wit, and at her mix of love and embarrassment in regard to her parents.Americans are written as essentially good people, albeit a bit ignorant on world events. The most villainous character is still portrayed with some sympathy. Because the story takes place over a couple years, the younger characters get an opportunity to mature.In fact, one of the details that impressed me most is how the Zomorod at the beginning of the story and at the end are clearly the same girl, but each version think and behave appropriate to her age. She has gained wisdom and confidence and lasting friendship. (I adored her circle of friends.)If there is one flaw, it's that the author imparts a lot of info on the Iran, which is both interesting and vital to the story, but the information is often imparted in a less-than-natural fashion. The best method is Zomorod's best friend asking questions out of interests, concern, and her plan to become a journalist. But then there is the neighbor who stops periodically to ask to have events explained to him.I hope that there will be more books in this series, because I would love to stay in touch.

I’m 10 years old and just started 5th grade. I could not put this book down. I was sad when reading was over. Some pretty sad parts too, I felt so bad. I really like how Zomorod (Cindy) made new friends even though she was really lonely. And there were a lot of funny parts. I want my mom to read this too. I think she’ll love it. I read it every day before school and after. And I read a few parts to my mom because they are so funny. My mom even made falafels for dinner after I finished the book. I loved this as my first book by this author.

I had purchased the audio book a while back, but had forgotten why. I listened to it with my kids (9 & 11) on a road trip. At first it was not that interesting to them, but we stuck with it, and then they were invested. I had not realized that it was about the Iran hostage crisis, which I was 10 years old during. It really put it into perspective for me and introduced my children to the events. Mostly though, was the human aspect part that I found importance in my children hearing about - the good and the bad in people. Firoozeh illustrates how people who actually get to know people of a different cultures can relate to them, and those who are ignorant are the ones who hate. There are some very good lessons that are important for this day in age in 2017.

This is the type of story that I would love to see it turn into a movie. I can't believe someone could fictionalize their own story and still makes it sound very natural and authentic. The historic information is very useful and is presented in a very pleasant way. I don't want to give out too much information about the story, but I really appreciate its language, very poetic in many instances. The author definitely has a very good sense of humor. I was almost moved to tears because the emotion delivered between the lines was so genuine, and I am still feeling very complicated about the fact that part of the story was fictional. I don't know if I want it to be 100% real or partially real, because I would feel sad that some of the characters did not actually exist, and I really liked them. Some part of me hates to know that some things did happened as described. The bottom line is that I love 100% of the story.

I read this book with my fifth grade students and while it is categorized as “middle grades” I still think YA lovers will enjoy it as long as romance is not a requirement. This book is semi-autobiographical and set in the 1970’s California. Zomorod is an Iranian girl trying to find her place in the US during a hostage crisis. The highlight of this book for me was that it showed very clearly that just because you’re from somewhere doesn’t mean that you share the same ideas and tactics that your government does. It shows that we can’t judge people on anything other than their own actions and beliefs. My students and I both enjoyed this book thoroughly. 4.5 out of 5 stars, hands down.

This is the story of a girl from Iran trying to fit in in Southern California.This is the story of 1977-1980. For those alive then this is when the shah fell and the Iranian hostage crisis happened.I was in high school and college during this time and it was amazing to read this history which I remember as told from another point of view.We all feel alienated from time to time in our lives. Imagism bring an Iranian in America during this time.Great voice. Great story. Friendship and heartache.Now to go read her other books.

This two volume set is justifiably considered "the one book on 20th Century art to read, if you can only read one." It covers the century exhaustively, without managing to bore or slide too far into pretension. No easy task, that.

Art Since 1900 opens each chapter with a momentous event in art history, and the first one is Sigmund Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams. Using the events as a springboard, we see how modern art began (according to the authors) with new ideas on thinking. Radical styles in painting actually began years earlier in Paris, with Van Gogh and Gaugin pushing the limits of acceptability, but in this book it was Gustav Klimt’s open defiance of the establishment. Klimt’s dark subject matter is a proof, along with Freud’s work, that Vienna could be a place of rebel thinking. Preceded by artists like Gaugin and Toulousse-Lautrec, known for bizarre colors and strange subject matter, we can deduce that modern art was decades in the making. Another source of the change in taste, according to the first chapter, is the rejection of cliché. Years earlier, Auguste Rodin created his famous Balzac statue as a formless column, with no indication that the subject was a writer (Balzac wears a bathrobe, because he often wrote late at night.) Similarly, Picasso’s Demoiselles D’Avignon removed the original plan to include a sailor (the client) and the medical student with a skull (memento mori). The chapter does not go into detail about the African symbolism in the painting, though it’s discussed in another essay titled Dread, Desire, and the Demoiselles. The second volume (it’s a two-book set) begins in 1945, when New York City and Chicago were becoming ground zero for the art world. Paris and Vienna were no longer the art capitals of the world, thanks to WWII driving the artists out, but keep in mind that years earlier, Paris and Vienna had pushed out Venice, Florence, and Rome. Where Paris was known for Chagall and Picasso, New York was now home to Pollock, De Koonig, and Mark Rothko, many of whom began in the WPA era. The authors make use of contemporary journalism, with sources from Clement Greenberg and Harold Rosenberg in the chapter on American abstract-impressionism, followed by realism making a comeback. I’d read a similar book, titled Art Since 1945, back when I was in college. It ended with the 1980’s artists like Harring and Basquiat (both of whom were proteges of Warhol) and Barbara Kruger. In every generation the textbook gets bigger, giving more attention to artists who, fifteen years ago, got no love. Take for instance Nicole Eisenman, whose 1996 works are included here, but would not have been included in this book in 2000. The Young British Artists are another movement that got more extensive coverage since their 1990’s debut. However, the book’s discussion of their origin is a bit slim, attributing them to Margaret Thatcher’s increased support for business, and the resulting British neuveau-riche class that sponsored Britain’s emerging artists. It is an accepted fact that early 20th century Britain didn’t have millionaires like Guggenheim and Rockefeller who bankrolled modern art, so Britain’s artists were a bit slower in their emergence. It wasn’t until the 90’s that the new British upper class would sponsor artists like Damien Hirst and Rachel Whiteread. I remember the YBA show at the Brooklyn Museum back in 2000, where Charles Saachi displayed his collection, aptly titled Sensation, as a way of introducing NY’s audiences to his country’s artists. It was like The Armory show 90 years earlier, where American audiences were introduced to Europe’s modern art. However, I was not ignorant of the YBA before the Saachi show; I’d seen the Chapman Brothers show at the Gogosian, and Whiteread’s pieces were displayed publicly back in 1994. Mayor Giuliani’s harsh criticism of Chris Offili’s Holy Virgin Mary With Elephant Dung only added to the publicity. The use of newsworthy events to begin each chapter makes sense, given that history will always be the biggest influence on art, and not the other way around. You have changes in economics, which leads to patronage, and then you have museums that can launch an artist’s career by giving him/her a platform. Not discussed in the book, though I would like to see it, is the subject of the artist neighborhoods in different countries. New York City had Soho, and I don’t know what the equivalent would be in London or Beijing. Chinese artist like Ai Wei Wei come at the end of the book, with a small entry, though Asian artists have been gaining ground for 15 years. I would read this book alongside Sanctuary (the studios of the YBA) and Dark Matter (how art has gone from commercialism to activism) in order to gain an understanding of the role of art in modern history. The authors make no effort to hide the fact that the scholarship is Eurocentric at the beginning, and US-centered after 1945. However, the USA had the Ashcan school in the years before 1945, with artists like George Bellows and his boxer painting, and then you had Edward Hopper’s streetscapes, but these guys don’t really come into play in the book. They were well-known in the USA, but rarely got any attention in Britain or Europe. I doubt that any of the artwork’s in the Metropolitan Museum’s American Wing are well known outside of the USA. Let me sum up by saying that this book can satisfy an entire course on modern art. It makes great effort to include non-US artists, though there’s little attention to artists from Latin America, the Middle East, Australia, or Africa. That could change, however, and I imagine this book will need a third volume in the next decade.

I am no artist. I have no measurable talent for drawing. Through this book, I have learned that drawing is not just for "artists," but can be enjoyed by everyone. I came to drawing late in life, through this book. The author give the non-artist the tools to draw landscape elements, and variations to begin finding your own style.

I expected a lot more. Poorly created and this was more of a pamphlet. This information would have filled about 5 pages of a normal book. Too expensive even at this price.

Shows a lot and makes it easy for you to create your own.

I love every book in this series.

Dr. Peter Breggin has stellar medical credentials, but he is a voice in the wilderness when it comes to exposing the shocking state of psychiatric drug prescribing as well as other more barbaric practices which do so much more harm than good. He is of the belief, that humane interaction with patients, particularly actually listening to their concerns, and getting a medical history before throwing pharmaceuticals at them, is the way to really help them. This is a companion piece to Dr. Breggin's more recent book, How to Get Off Psychiatric Drugs Safely. Although I was intimately familiar with this topic, having lived through an excruciating experience with several primary care and psychiatric professionals, anyone interested in the topic in general will find this book eye-opening.

Very disturbing and enlightening information. I wish that I or my doctor had known this information for the past 20 years. It would have made a life-changing difference.

I bought this book as an adjunct to reading Dr. Wesley Muhammad's " Understanding the Assault on The Black Man, Black Manhood, and Black Masculinity." The revelations made by Dr. Breggin are disturbing. They support 100% the position of Dr. Muhammad with respect to part four(etc) of the above mentioned book.

After years of dealing with and caring for a spouse who had fallen victim of prescription writing psychiatrists, I was immediately drawn to this publication when I found it referenced. Dr. Breggin confirmed what I had been suspecting for months, if not years; my spouse was no better off for all the drugs prescribed...and she had become a non-functioning person as a result of taking those drugs. The author details the terrible side effects of commonly prescribed psychiatric drugs, and points out how the prescribers, psychiatric MD's, routinely ignore and fail to warn the patient and the patient's family of the downsides and long-term ineffectiveness of those drugs. Dr. Breggin gives specific examples and references to commonly prescribed psychiatric medications, elaborates on details of their testing and approval processes, and offers proof that the drugs are often more harmful than effective and that they tend to create the very symptoms that the patient is trying to eleviate. He also points out that the prescribers never accept responsibility for a patient not recovering, and consequently they just change medications or add additional drugs to the "cocktail" when symptoms persist. After digesting the information in the book, we have developed a plan for withdrawing my spouse from the drugs while maintaining a relationship with the psychiatrist currently

What an eyeopening book!

This is an amazingly researched book, extremely informative, and thorough. It details the history of each psychiatric drug and its acceptance and side effects as well as why doctors prescribe them. The author has access to all the hidden information, the failed trials that are swept under the rug, and all the less than pristine tactics employed by the drug companies in their effort to secure profitability. It is an eye opener as to the influence of drug companies on the treatment decisions of psychiatrists, and it describes how blind psychiatrists are to the harm they are causing to patients with the use of these toxic drugs. It will give you very uncomfortable information and make your blood boil with outrage. Dr Breggin shows amazing honesty and courage.Where the book fails for me, it is in offering a solution, because its premise is that drugs are poisons and should be avoided and that every mental illness can be treated with therapy alone. Not really all that useful, Kaplan, Barron's and REA guides are better. Acceptable for a quick skim and the practice tests. The exam is difficult, pace yourself carefully and you will probably do better than you think.
