This book was on my Christmas wish list this year and Santa delivered. Ethan Wayne and the editors of John Wayne Magazine have created a wonderful culinary remembrance of one of America's biggest stars, the Duke himself. This cookbook is a lovely blend of nostalgia, historic photos, family remembrances of John Wayne and the favorite recipes he enjoyed with family and friends that readers can recreate at home. Beautiful color photography and a nice array of the kind of dishes that made entertaining so popular in the 50s, 60s and 70s. This one is a keeper and if you are in any way, shape or form a fan of Wayne's work, this is a must-have cookbook for your library!

Excellent book with brilliant pictures of the Duke and the meals. The format makes this probably one of the funnest cookbooks to read for leisure!

Recipes I can actually use that are good. Thanks to the Duke and family. I would have enjoyed sharing this with my mom, just wish it was available 2 months ago.

It's what the Duke ate. That's what makes it cool. The recipes are all pretty easy and straight forward. Wayne's wife is probably mostly to thank for this book. I'm a Duke fan so I thought why not? It really does have some good recipes and they don't have a lot of exotic ingredients. (That is how I can tell if it's a BULLS*** cookbook.) When you have to spend extreme amounts of money to attain a flavor or a taste. These recipes are totally do-able, with ingredients that are reasonable.

I don't really know much about grilling and I'm not a big fan of John Wayne, but I have a relative who loves both of these things. They absolutely LOVED this book. Raved about it in person and then sent an additional, extraordinarily detailed followup thank you note about how amazing it was after putting it to the test with their barbecue. Probably one of the most successful gifts I've ever given.

I say anyone who is a true John Wayne fan should get this book. I have every movie he was ever in, I have a John Wayne collection that doesn't even fit into one room. This book told me things I didn't even know. I have only just started to cook using the recipes, boy are they great tasting. Was a gift to my son for Father's Day, but I kept it. Now have to order another one to send to him.

I bought this for my husband for Christmas and he loves it. When it arrived in the mail I thumbed through it before wrapping and couldn't wait for him to open it so we could start trying some of the recipes. These are real recipes that anyone would like to try. Plenty of food here for a carnivore with vegetables too. I would recommend this book for anyone who likes to grill.

This is an AMAZING cookbook! FINALLY! A cookbook with recipes that I actually USE! This cookbook not only shows the proper way to grill, but includes lots of side dishes to go with your barbecued meats. It has my highest recommendation!

Contained some interesting recipes with pictures and stories about the Duke. I bought 2 copies for my two adult sons birthdays. I like to do theme based gift giving. I also gave them The John Wayne Spice Rub Gift Set and the John Ford: Dreaming the Quiet Man Documentary (They already own the movie) which I also purchased from Amazon. I also gave them a bottle of the Duke brand bourbon whiskey which I had to order from an online liquor store. These items made for a nice John Wayne gift set.

I love these stories by Thea and I had these on kindle but I like to have a book in my hand. So when these became available in paperback, I got this immediately. And I reread the stories, they are that good! I love reading about Dragos and his family, how they cope and the stories are fun to read and very interesting.

This is a wonderful family adventure read, so often I fall in love with characters in a book and I imagine what their life is like as a couple. This book fulfils all those fantasies. It brings me great joy to re-read this book over and over again as it never gets old.Wonderful job Thea.

Read them all super fast good reads, only negative is that it appears she is done with the series and I am hooked! HAHA I will read her other nooks

This book is one I will be coming back to again and again. What a great reference tool! I also LOVE the way the author explains everything so thoroughly, with ample research and supporting evidence, but in a way that is easily understood. It is Biblically sound and very practical.

This book has helped me to understand the bible and it's meaning better than any other book that I've read. Getting in touch with God's feasts, festival, and fasts has been very eye opening. Understanding culture and covenant. Definitely worth the read.

The embarrassing powerlessness in the church today has been a vexation to me. The power of the believers in the first century was awe inspiring, and that power continued for three centuries, then died.Heidler explains precisely where the church veered off the straight an narrow, and what it must do today to return to its roots.

There is so much "stuff" and emphasis on stuff that isn't Biblical in our Christian expression of "church" that I have often WONDERED how the American church got so off track. I wept through reading this book because it was a confirmation. I knew things had gotten garbled by Constantine but I learned a bit more on the "why & how". So many christian believers were taught that they are the new root, or the new chosen and I chaffed at that doctrine/teaching. It never sat well, and to me there was a bit of arrogance to that attitude. Israel is God's covenant people, and abandoning Israel never made sense to me. I knew Rome NEVER was the City of God, or hallowed ground. Jerusalem is and will ALWAYS be. Latin isn't the holy language chosen by God. The Vatican is a man made institution that doesn't follow Biblical precepts at all. Not trying to offend, it is just a very pagan based expression of man's attempt to try to be holy. It has always been focused on power and political ambitions rather than spiritual pursuits. Our holiness will NEVER measure up. Lots of people ascribe to that philosophy and practice, and the numbers are astounding, but if numbers were that important, Israel would be insignificant, because they have always been a smaller group. To me that suggests numbers aren't the key, faithfulness and holiness is. I have always believed that Messiah was very different than the "Christ". "Christ" was/and has been culturalized in a sense and I think that is dangerous. Re-packaging the "Christ" to our standards is similar to idolatry, isn't it? No wonder why people are confused, lost, and think religion is useless. It is! Unfortunately most of "Christianity" in America is more about being a commodity that people PROFIT off, rather than surrender to.

Describes the first church in operation and how Christians have abandoned much of the richness that was present without any attempt at converting between Christianity and Judaism. Reveals the significant amount of paganism that was introduced in the fourth century that was and is accepted as doctrine.I believe this is a must read for everyone who is a Bible teacher or student and is hungry to move beyond the broth and milk that is typically available at Christian bookstores. I think I have purchased over ten of these, and either given them to pastors and Bible study teachers (predominantly), or loaned them out only to have them never return.Highly recommend. Heidler also wrote "Experiencing the Holy Spirit" that is another great resource.

since i loved la fronteria i was hopeful and excited to read this book. however, after having read it, im sadly disappointed by the vagueness and repetition of the work. her words and thoughts are persistently elliptical, with some passages being more successful than others at describing the spirit that animates her life. a bit wishy-washy.

About the Author

Gary Chandler grew up in a small ski town south of Lake Tahoe, California. He earned his bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley, and also studied abroad in Mexico City and Oaxaca. After graduation, Gary backpacked through much of Mexico and Central America, and later Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean. For a 2017 guidebook, I was surprised at the number of places that were closed, particularly in Campeche. It was helpful, though, in planning our visit to MÃ©rida, but we ended up booking our hotel after a search on TripAdvisor as we didn't find anything we liked based on the book's recommendations. For museums in MÃ©rida, we did use it, but not so much for restaurants. Our fabulous hotel in MÃ©rida (Hotel MÃ©rida Santiago) provided us an excellent city map with recommendations for restaurants and museums. In the end, because the book is printed on heavy paper, I tore sections out for use while touring then left the book in Mexico.

Very good guide, but beware of the opening times published in it. We used the guide for Merida and opening hours listed were not always correct. Otherwise, well done, and a handy size!

This is one of the worst travel guides I've had the misfortune of buying in a longtime. The writing is pedestrian, and the writer offers absolutely no introductory historical background to the various cities and regions of the Yucatan. Very few interesting sounding restaurant recommendations, zero information on constructing an itinerary to visit the regions, etc., etc. I never thought I'd end up extolling Fodor's but their guide is vastly better than this one.

My daughter and I read through the places we were going to visit and took the book with us. Information about visiting sites, tours, and driving were helpful. We only took one tour as it seemed the only way to really see what we wanted to. We rented a car for 2 days and the other 4 we took ferries or buses. Maps were really helpful. Great information. Best ground truth

I bought several guides to the Mexican Caribbean before a trip to the Riviera Maya and Cancun. This one was head and shoulders above the others: thorough, well-written, full of good insider tips, more cenotes mentioned than I could visit in a single trip. Very much looking forward to the next edition of the title, too.
