This is one of the most important books to be written, if one desires to gain at least a rudmentary understanding of the Eastern Orthodox Christian perspective of the sacramental life of the believing Body of Christ. While deep enough to satisfy a theology students needs it is not overly professorial. Fr. Alexander moves masterfully through the concepts he desires the reader to gain yet remains understandable to an average lay person. It was a life transforming book for me and continues to be a staple well source of quotations through many years.

I just finished reading this book, and I am very sad that it is finished. I have never read an Orthodox book that was so inspirational and motivating. I couldn't put it down. I have already purchased an additional copy to give as a gift. I can't recommend this book enough.

I am a Protestant/Evangelical Christian, but I have found this book to be deeply enriching and to have contributed a great deal to transforming my understanding of many things. I appreciate both the authors insight, and his gracious tone towards Christians of other persuasions. This book is extremely edifying.

Alexander Schmemann's book is imbued with great passions for a true understanding of the sacraments - as means of grace and pointers to the transformed (and transforming) Christian life in the light of Christ's self-offering to the world. Schmemann poignantly exposes the secular subterfuge of a sacred-profane, religious-secular dichotomy that is inimical to the nerve centre of the Christian view of life as one that belongs wholly to God. What the sacraments do is neither to offer a kind of solace from the 'real world' nor a self-help scheme that dishes out remedies for life's problems. Rather, they are vivid and concrete expressions of the whole life that has now been redeemed by Christ and given back to us for communion. Whereas, the fall has alienated us from God and life and renders food, nature, work, family and life outside the dominion of God, Christ by virtue of his life, death and resurrection has begun to restore all things in God till he be all in all.Expositing the sacrament of Time and the various ordinances/mysteries (Eucharist, Baptism, Chrismation, Confession, Matrimony, Ordination, Unction) in the Orthodox tradition, Schmemann graces us with a passionate guide on how these are not to be co-opted by the world as the innocuous religious rites of hatch, match and despatch but the very windows through which we see the world in the process of being recapitulated by God. Hence, they are intimately connected with the mission and calling of the church to be the witnesses of Christ, who has offered himself as the sacrifice for the life of the world. For example, the Eucharist is the restoration of food as not just something for the stomach but as a means of communion with God. It satisfies our real hunger for God. Sunday is not just a day-off to do religious things, quite independent of the workaday week but the first day of the new creation! It invites us to enter into the Time (kairos) of God's new kingdom inaugurated on the Resurrection morning. While the secularist bemoans that 'there's nothing new under the sun'(Eccl 1), the Sunday liturgy points to the day when 'God will make all things new' (Rev 21)!Though written from an Orthodox perspective, it will find ready resonance from Christians across the board, especially those from a liturgical background and are attuned to how the sacraments work and what they are meant to be - as the intersections of heaven and earth as well as the physical signs of a larger objective spiritual reality.However, a caveat for those looking for a simpler introduction to Orthodox sacramental theology, this may not be the book for you. While articulate and clear a writer Schmemann certainly is, he does not make for straightforward reading, as it assumes a certain level of familarity with liturgical (even Orthodox) language and he writes with a quasi-poetic style. I would recommend instead the introductory books by Timothy Ware and Daniel Clendenin.

A classic work of the 20th century. Would recommend to Christians of all 'stripes', but certainly, of course, for Orthodox Christians.

This book is so deep and far-reaching in terms of illustrating a Christian worldview which is distinctively Orthodox that I don't know where to begin. It is as fundamental a shift as atomic theory was in physics. For the Life of the World challenges some classic dichotomies between "now" and "later", earth and heaven, secular and sacred. It's all the same *stuff*, we don't have to wait until later to experience the Kingdom - it's present NOW, in the sacraments. We don't have to view sacraments in opposition to the world, they are the completion of it, the satiation of a hunger for GOOD things.This book is comforting, challenging, and stimulating... and has refined my perspective on life, the world, worship, and the sacraments. A blessing to read that I plan to gift to close friends.

The late Orthodox Priest, educator, and writer, Alexander Schmemann has written a profound text dealing with the sacarments of the Church. The book works on several fronts.One, the text works well for laity who have little academic training, but want a truly deeply provoking book on the sacramental and liturgictal life of the Church. Secondly, it is written well enough for academics to read and pondure insightful scholarship on doctrines such as the Eucharist and its revelance when looking at the creation, man's present condition, and the Kingdom of God. Further, it gives a perspective not often read about in Western Protestant circles and brings historical tecahings into a mystical, yet, understandable (though not completely comprehendable) way. This may appeal to Western Christians who want mystery, but are afraid of leaviing there mind at the door.This book is a must read. Edifying for all, whether Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox.

Foundation and Empire is the second of the original Foundation trilogy written in the 1950s. The first book is Foundation and the last is Second Foundation. I enjoyed Foundation but I liked F&E quite a bit more! Foundation consists of five disconnected short stories, too short for adequate development of the settings or characters. F&E is much more focused, containing only two stories, the second of which really impressed me.A quick refresher on the background: The psychohistorian Hari Seldon was able to mathematically foresee the future of human society in the Milky Way. It wasn't pretty. Socio-economic forces were to cause the total collapse of the Trantorian Empire and lead to 30,000 years of anarchy and barbarism before a new empire restored peace and order. However, Seldon saw an "alternate path" that could reduce the duration of the Dark Ages to a single millennium. He established two societies (called Foundations) to bring this change about.In Foundation, we learn how the fledgling First Foundation established itself after Seldon's death and how it grew powerful. In F&E, Seldon is long dead and the First Foundation faces much more serious threats: a war with the dying but still powerful Trantorian Empire and a war with a mutant leader called The Mule who possesses incredible powers. The part about the war with the Empire is a straightforward narrative with a couple interesting twists. The second part about The Mule takes place a few decades later and is written in the style of a mystery, sort of like the first two Robot novels.Since The Mule is an individual of extraordinary power, Seldon's psychohistorical predictions for the First Foundation are in jeopardy because they deal only with masses of people and large scale socio-economic forces. Hence the second part is a more exciting read. :-) Also, until the end of the second part the Second Foundation is a mysterious society on the other side of the Galaxy about whom we know next to nothing. Although I guessed the nature of The Mule's powers, I did not guess his identity and it was a great surprise for me when it was revealed at the end. The events of the last two chapters are stunning and really make you want to rip into the third book. Yet F&E doesn't end on a cliffhanger and is quite satisfying in and of itself. This unique blend is a testament to Asimov's genius as an author. Also, you'll learn why the mutant calls himself The Mule and it's quite enlightening!With novels written later, Asimov tied together three series into one huge one! I recommend reading the entire 14-book series in the following order: the four Robot novels, the three Empire novels, and the seven Foundation novels (the original trilogy plus two prequels and two sequels). So far I've yet to read the last three Foundation books (Second Foundation, Foundation's Edge, Foundation and Earth), but so far most have been excellent and all have been well above average.

The second book in the Foundation series continues the narrative of the first; it chronicles the defeat of the decaying Galactic Empire by the Foundation, and its subsequent defeat by the mutant intelligence that is the Mule. Asimov's books are an almost perfect blend of suspense, action, dialogue, character-building, world-building, narrative, and plot. He knows how to keep the pages turning. Even the less interesting half of the book (the first-half) is still enjoyable - it's just that the second part is so much more interesting; the twist at the end is especially something to be savored. Like all his books, the joy comes from not just the narrative itself, but the situations that Asimov places his characters in, and how they ingeniously improvise solutions to their dilemmas. The Foundation series is, irrefutably, classic science fiction, and it makes one wonder why Hollywood hasn't taken these literary gems and processed them into something less fine and lacking luster. One minor grievance; some phrases seem to reappear in multiple books of the series. Asimov seems particularly fond of the adjective "sardonically" - but this can scarcely be deemed a flaw, just something that one might notice.

I decided to go through and re-read all of my childhood favorites. I am thoroughly enjoying the series, but it does seem it isn't quite as engaging to me now as it was when I was a young man. Regardless it is fun and interesting.

If you've read any Asimov books before, you'll appreciate the depth and breadth of his imagination, if not then you're in for a treat!The Foundatuion series, of which this is the first novel, is set in the distant future. Man has colonised most of the galaxy and it is headed by an Emporer and administered by a huge beauracracy. However, one man is able to see the coming fall of the empire and the dark age to follow. He plans to set up a repository of knowledge from which a new civilisation can rise.What we have here is a spin on the fall of the Roman empire on a galactic scale. Asimovs strength is his ability to speculate about future social structures and mores. His weakness is in character development. So what you get is classic space opera, but with a 1950s undertone to it.This is an enjoyable, light read and will doubtless lead you onto the rest of the series.I hope this helps :D

I read this book when I was 16, and loved it then. Now I've just read it again, 30 years later. It's still a terrific read. Showing the struggle from the perspective of the Empire in the first half of the book was fascinating. Asimov deftly portrayed the huge, ponderous, decaying entity of the Empire brilliantly. He also showed that if somehow it was motivated to do so, it's enormous resources could still be channeled to destroy the Foundation - but only if the effort could be sustained long enough.The second half with the Mule was great. Reading this part the second time wasn't quite as fun, as I knew the shocking revelations at the end already. However, the Mule character was an unforgettable device, and was great.If you have even the slightest interest in Sci-Fi, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to you.

I didn't expect much from this book except applying the law of attraction by affirmations from the mala but was I wrong. It described in detail how it works and explains scenarios of how to use it. I meditate and also do affirmations but it is not enough, this book which I bought gives it the final punch to manifesting. Just knowing the law of attraction is not enough. Knowing how to use the mala in conjunction with LOA seals the deal. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Magic Mala". I just couldn't wait to turn the next page, I was engrossed in the book. This is a very inspiring and uplifting book. I plan on introducing this book to the book club I just joined. I also plan on buying the book for friends. For me to miss a Seinfeld episode to want to read this book means that I REALLY enjoyed reading it. lol I read it in no time, not wanting it to end. I highly recommend it.

This book has really opened my eyes to many new ways of working with my mala. I made a string of prayer beads --mala-- a few years ago for myself. Made it for stress relief and to work with mantras and the Divine Feminine. I love my mala even though it is quite simple - not a fancy beaded one-used what I had which was all I could get. I know from using it how much it helped my health and mind. Your book though has given me so many new ideas! I'm excited to practice them. This does remind of the Celestine Prophecy, like that book this too is a spiritual adventure. Thank you for writing it and sharing wisdom in a great story format.

I wanted to love this book, because I think it's so important to have more spiritual novels in the world. Given the excellent reviews, for the most part, I thought this would be right up my alley. Unfortunately, the story comes across as too simple, too preachy, and the characters do not have to face any obstacles.Everything just sails on, as if the novel would have been written by a 15-year old. I also found the wife quite dumb and irresponsible. They don't have money to eat anything but mac and cheese from a box, but she goes out and has a sundae? And they owe several months of rent, but she signs up for a new apartment and just thinks it's OK not to pay her current landlord?I understand the thought behind it - have faith and everything will work out. BUT, this faith should not include scamming and cheating other people. The universe (or God) doesn't work that way. you have to act in the best interest of all involved.This book would have been much better as non-fiction. Other than the beautiful color picture on the front of the map, its not worth the paper its printed on. The map unfolds into a view of a million to one ratio of Ukraine. There is no "key" or guides for what you are looking at. No street guides, nothing. Just a gigantic map of an entire country, crunched down into a nearly unreadable format. It would be impossible to navigate this country with this map. I know, I just came back from my trip. I tried to give the map as a gift to the people i was visiting, and no one wanted it. I ended up throwing this map in the trash. I couldn't even use it for fireplace starter material. Don't waste your money on this cute picture.

The map is huge and detailed. Only problem I had with it was that the map gets cut in half for exactly where I needed it so you have to keep flipping the map over from front to back

Excellent large scale map of the country with lots of detail. Sufficiently detailed to follow progress of events in the Donbas War on the ground.

Wished we had the entire country on one side of the map. This is being displayed on the wall of our family room because our son is serving an LDS mission in Ukraine.

While the map covers a large area and is very comprehensive, it is also very large and unwieldy and for this reason was not as useful as I had hoped.

Very helpful in planning my trip to the Ukraine. I would recommend this map to others. Can write a better review after my visit.

Reading fast while maintaining good comprehension has always been a challenge for me. I love how Nathan first addresses with utmost clarity the specifics of the problem in lacking the ability to read fast. I have to admit all the three problems occur to me most of the time. As I went through the reading and non-reading techniques, I learned so much. Will definitely practice the techniques written in this book.Although I do not think speed reading is applied to all kinds of reading (leisure reading, poems, etc.), one cannot deny its usefulness to a lot of circumstances.I highly recommend this book. Whether you're a student who has a lot of readings to go through, a researcher in the sciences who reads scientific journals, a lawyer with numerous cases being read everyday or someone who wants to improve speed reading (while maintaining comprehension of course), this book is for you.

Having recently purchased college textbooks, I'm no stranger to the dull, boring process of actually reading through one. It's only natural to progress through something slowly when you have no motivation. Sick of re-reading the same passages over when i wasn't comprehending them, I decided to root out the problem altogether and give speed reading a try. The low price and (thankfully) low number of pages helped me get back to my task quickly, only this time I was prepared. The book doesn't waste any time and delves immediately into the basics of speed reading, which is actually much easier than it sounds, before handing you several fun, easy speed building exercises. It details how to pinpoint information that is relevant, quickly process it, and move on. Delivers on it's promise in a shockingly short 32 pages. I'd definitely give it a try, it practically pays for itself.

No real techniques presented. One or two minor facts presented on reading. The rest is filler. In fact, if I could return it, i would.

I can't believe just how fast I am now reading after working through this book. I have heard people say before that it was possible, but with Nathan's help, I really have been able to get it working.Nathan starts by explaining why it is so important to read fast. We are hit all of the time with too much information and too little time. The only solution here is to be able to consume that information faster. Though, why don't we all do it if it is so easy?The answer as Nathan explains is because of a number of obstacles. He goes through each of these barriers including Retreating, The Voice and word Fixation and explains how to overcome them.He points out that it isn't just speed, but comprehension. Our brains can handle the additional information and we allow our believed limitations get in the way of reaching our potential.Finally, he goes step by step through measuring how fast you are now, the key techniques and then finishes up with some exercises and strategies.This was a great read and now that I am speed reading, I should be able to stop wasting time and get more information faster.

I was very pleasantly surprised that I am now able to read faster than before. The author easily explains the obstacles we have and how to overcome them. By the time you finish the book you will be able to measure how fast youâ€™re reading and can continue to practice with the techniques and exercises he gives. I wish I had read this book when I was in school! I received a discount in exchange for an honest and unbiased review and all opinions are based on my personal experience.

Let's face it, reading is essential whether you are a seasoned professional working with a large firm or a homeschooling parent. Reading is necessary in all aspects of your life. I studied speed reading years ago and it increased my reading considerably. However, over the years I didn't really think about it all that much and as a result I realise by reading this book I had fallen back into some bad habits.It was an easy read with some good practical exercises and excellent basic overview if speed reading.I also applies speed reading to this book and flew through it :-)

After reading A Course in Miracles and Disappearance of Universe (metaphysics texts), I was FLOORED to discover TWV - it is not something 90% of the readers will pick up on without reading those texts first, but this is NOT a story line kids, this is THE story line. I love how sweet Dolores put down in words the basis of everything that we need to know and it is like a giant swoosh over most everyone's head. There are morsels of incredible and unprecedented insight in her books. Thank you Dolores, for all your hard work and perseverance, this will matter to so many in so many ways! We know you are still with us!

This are the answers I have been looking for four a very long time, for years I ask the living creator to show me the way to change the world around me, how do I show love to Mother Earth? I always looked into the universe and stars to hear the answers because I new that the answers were out there.Now I understand the events I have experience during the night when I notice I was been taken somewhere to learn and to participate and do my part in this amazing work I'm part of!

Ever since I found out about Dolores Cannon's work and her books I've been really interested in them. I wanted to see all her videos, meet her, get a session myself and of course devour all of the books she wrote so this was the first one I bought as I identified myself with one of those waves. For those interested in past/present/future life times being altered by our deeds in the current era and how much knowledge is at our fingertips yet hidden by the mainstream media as some sort of occultism, this book and others she wrote are for you! You will feel identified with many things mentioned in it and feel a deep loving resonance with the your heart's true for THIS is not fiction! It's real and it's something we'll experience more and more as time goes by and the veil lifts, thins and vanishes with the old way of thinking.

As a former Catholic and seminarian, I find Dolores Cannon's writings about our existence more sensible than anything else I've read.

I think I preferred reading The Custodians as The Three Waves gets a little redundant, but so far what I've read confirms something I've felt for a long time now but was lacking the proper context. I find this book extremely relevant for what's going on today. I have not read the last few chapters so when I do I'll update.Edit: Finished the book with the exception of reading like 4 peoples accounts, so like a few pages here and there but over all a great book where I found some of the accounts to mirror my experiences giving me more pieces to fit to this curious puzzle. I'm aware that some criticize Dolores for being too blinded by the light so to speak, glossing over that some of these beings may have a darker agenda but I went in with my heart open rather than my eyes whilst reading and much of it resonates. I like the energy of the book and ended it feeling hopeful, empowered and even proud.

This book answered tons of my questions about 2012 and the so-called Shift, Apocalypse, etc. Dolores does not use generic or ambiguous terminology. She straight up tells you what her research has indicated, and it is more explicit than anything else I've come across.Ever since I saw a web video of Dolores discussing the Nostradamus stuff, I immediately trusted her but forgot about her until another author recommended Dolores' book The Custodians. I am glad I read The Custodians and The Convoluted Universe series prior to reading The Three Waves of Volunteers, but I don't think these are pre-requisites. The info in The Three Waves was easier for me to read and absorb. The material is also consistent with other authors' material about the Crystal Children, the Indigo Children, the Star People, etc.There are some formatting issues with the Kindle version, for example there are a lot of quotation marks instead of apostrophes. I (did"t) let it bother me, because the information is solid and I am so glad that we are blessed with a reliable source of information about the big transition.Thanks Dolores!

I'd rather not write a long review of this book -- I simply do not know what to think. For those interested in metaphysics, I should maybe say that it goes (mostly) rather against the books of Dr Michael Newton and Brian Weiss ... It's more about aliens and ET's, and our rather intimate connection to them, which we know nothing about in our daily lives. Dolores Cannon uses a deep form of hynotherapy and gets her information in this way from her clients (or patients). As she could not possibly have made up any of these stories, it remains a deep mystery to the reader ... and whether it's all to be believed. While you read it, you believe it all. Afterwards you may start to wonder ... By all means, read it and make up your own mind. I tend to think the aliens and their worlds really do exist -- after all, what do we know about the Universe? (Or Universes?) We know nothing. Earth is a lowly, harsh planet.

Just about every answer to the questions of existence you can think of! This book is not only vital for "volunteers" (I am a mission-based, second wave volunteer, as it turns out), but is also critical for anyone searching for their purpose. About the Author

Christopher Noessel is a veteran of the interaction design industry, having designed products and services, and helped clients with design strategy across many disparate domains for more than 20 years. In that time, he co-founded a small interaction design agency where he developed interactive exhibitions and environments for museums. He worked as a director of information design at international web consultancy marchFIRST, where he also helped establish the interaction design Center of Excellence. For ten years, he worked with a boutique interaction design agency in San Francisco, where he led the "generator" half of that practice. He is now the Global Design Practice Manager for the Travel and Transportation industry at IBM, working closely with IBM Design. His desk, when he's at it, sits near the San Francisco home of Watson. Christopher was one of the founding graduates of the now-passing-into-legend Interaction Design Institute Ivrea in Ivrea, Italy, where his thesis project was a comprehensive service design for lifelong learners called Fresh. The project was presented at the mLearn conference in London in 2003. He has since helped to visualize the future of counterterrorism as a freelancer, built prototypes of coming technologies for Microsoft, and designed telehealth devices to accommodate the crazy facts of modern health care. Christopher has written for online publications for many years, but was first published in print as a coauthor of the interaction design pattern chapter in the textbook edited by Simson Garfinkel, RFID: Applications, Security, and Privacy. His Spidey sense goes off at random topics, and this has led him to speak at conferences around the world about a wide range of things, including interactive narrative, ethnographic user research, interaction design, pair design, sex-related interactive technologies, free-range learning, the future of tech, artificial intelligence, and the relationship between science fiction and interface design with the 2012 Rosenfeld Media book Make It So: Interaction Design Lessons from Science Fiction, coauthored with Nathan Shedroff. He is keeper of the blog scifiinterfaces.com and runs related sci-fi movie nights all over the world. In 2014, he coauthored the 4th Edition of About Face: The Essentials of Interaction Design, helping modernize it for the six years that had passed since its prior release. If you run into him on the street and want to get an earful, ask about any of the handful of other books he s got rattling around in his head. One involves the strange and wonderful world of generative randomness, and another involves the design of technology that helps its users get smart enough not to need it anymore.

Absolutely the best read in 2017 for content professionals and business folk who aim to help improve customer experiences by leveraging the power of narrow artificial intelligence. It's a book that draws you in, explains how things work (and how things don't) and leaves you thinking, "Wow! How can I use these ideas to help others?"I read the entire book on a cross-country flight. I couldn't put it down (or stop taking notes). This excellent work by Chris Noessel should be required reading for any serious business professional, product manager, content strategist, and engineer on the planet.Let's move away from solutions that help us do work and toward solutions that do work for us!

Chrisâ€™s book is a perfect addition to the AI designerâ€™s bookshelf. Easy to read. Great insights and full of examples.

I highly recommend this book for product managers, strategists, and UXers trying to understand whether, where, and how â€œArtificial Intelligenceâ€ fits into their work.What struck me most about â€˜Designing Agentive Technologyâ€™ was the originality of thought in its very conception and approach. Chris Noesselâ€™s aim, â€œnot only arrogant but also damned difficultâ€ is to change the perception of technology from â€œa collection of tools or gadgetsâ€ to â€œan evolutionary flow around human problems.â€ In this case, his focus is on a variety of tools/gadgets/solutions coalescing around our desire to delegate tasks to technology, an area gaining remarkable salience with the rise of A.I.Instead of tackling a subject as nebulous, expansive, and hype-worn as Designing for A.I., Noessel establishes the case for a different lens, a subcategory of A.I. he calls â€œagentive,â€ and focuses his attention there. Agentive technology is that which leverages an â€˜agentâ€™ of limited artificial intelligence to which we delegate certain delineated tasks (from Roomba to Spotifyâ€™s Discover playlists). Noesselâ€™s ability to switch effectively between theoretical schema and practical considerations (see in particular Ch. 5, â€œA Modified Frame for Interactionâ€ and Ch. 12 on ethics) makes the book both thought-provoking and immediately applicable.It is quite challenging to write a book about a rapidly changing technology without it feeling outdated by the time its published, but Noesselâ€™s conceptual framework and his focus on interaction over interface will, I believe, keep â€˜Designing Agentive Technologyâ€™ relevant for quite some time.

I'm an enterprise designer at Netflix, and the agentive design concept was a real eye-opener for me. It's changed how I think about software and how it can help people, not just as actors in an automated system, but as the main focus. Coming from a user-centered design background, this book is an evolution of that concept, re-centering design on the people who are both affected byâ€“and influencingâ€“a system.Chris Noessel's writing is both optimistic and realistic. I feel energized by this hopeful vision for the future of technology and empowered to change how I think about design in the present to work towards that future.

As technology moves towards this direction, we will face more challenges with how to design communicative interfaces with humans. The author makes this fun, informative and easy to understand. He's often referencing Sci-Fi or making the concepts relatable, such as the hilarity of autocorrect failures. The tone is never overly dystopian but more honest, as it is in our power to make sure we use this technology for good.

Designing Agentive Technology is a must read, Chris Noessel has delivered an incredibly relatable text on a very important and timely topic. With all the hype surrounding AI it is easy to get lost in the reeds - Designing Agentive Technology cuts through the noise and bring a fun, practical and very timely guide to designing true value add products in this space. Fun and engaging - Noessel's text addresses an important topic in a way that can be enjoyed by a wide audience and impact the future direction of AI Design!

If artificial intelligence is of any interest to you, I would strongly recommend this book.As student with an engineering background, this book was a wonderful breath of fresh air. This book steps away from the technical 'how' of AI and instead focuses on the 'why'. Great examples drawn from the real world and science fiction.Overall: refreshing, new insights on the road to work smarter, not harder through agentive technology.

This book is the perfect balance of theory and practice - great for people embarking on AI-related projects, or looking to adapt their practice toward the future of interaction design. Filled with examples and anecdotes, it's personable and very easy to read but carefully thought out and serious in the right ways. From the point of view of a long-time UX strategist, this is one of the best professional books I've read.
