Review

Praise for The Power of Eight “Lynne McTaggart leads the way in guiding us to an enlightened perspective on the power of consciousness.” —Marianne Williamson, New York Times bestselling author of A Return to Love “The Power of Eight is at once a revolution and an evolution in understanding, which opens us to both proof and practice of how the powers of a group intention can transmute and transform our pathos and our pain.” —Jean Houston, PhD, chancellor, Meridian University  “Lynne McTaggart has demonstrated something unique in the mind-body-spirit movement: You don’t need to be a Sufi master, take ayahuasca or spend years of disciplined spiritual practice to get a taste of the miraculous.  All you need is a small group with a common intention.  Read this book, form your own Power of Eight group and welcome the miracles in your own life.” —Deepak Chopra, New York Times bestselling author of Quantum Healing “Throw away your self-help books.  As Lynne McTaggart convincingly argues in this extraordinary book, it’s ‘other help’ that can truly transform you. As soon as you turn your thoughts from yourself to intending for someone else, you create rebound effects that heal your own life. Form a Power of Eight group and experience this miraculous circle for yourself.” —Marci Shimoff, New York Times bestselling author of Happy for No Reason “Lynne McTaggart’s The Power of Eight is a gift to humanity, a book that truly will change your life – and in the most extraordinary and unexpected ways.  This is the real secret – your life transforms when you heal for others in a group.  It’s at the heart of most of the world’s religions – but McTaggart brings it to life, and verifies it with science. Read this book, for your own sake and for your family and friends (and, yes, even for complete strangers).” —John Gray, New York Times bestselling author of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus “Required reading for anyone who’d like proof of the power of prayer and group intention for it was written by the ultimate Doubting Thomas. Lynne McTaggart offers a page-turning account of her own struggles to understand the numerous extraordinary healing effects she witnesses in small and large intention groups.  Every church group, every book group and every business team need a Power of Eight group to create a vortex of healing and transformation.” —John Assaraf, New York Times bestselling author of Having it All, and CEO of NeuroGym “Every one of us has the power to use our thoughts to heal our world.  Lynne McTaggart doesn’t just describe this truth, she proves it again and again in scientifically-controlled studies, in large web-based experiments, in the compelling stories of people who have been transformed by her Power of Eight groups. It’s something you can do right now, and it will utterly change your life. And it’s so simple! Utterly revolutionary.” —Janet Attwood, New York Times bestselling author of The Passion Test “This is a monumentally significant book, a once-in-a-generation work that will turn the tide in how we unleash the power of healing for each other and for the world. Drink in its meticulous and transparent scientific method, its countless uplifting stories of vivid healing breakthroughs and its breathtakingly luminous vision. Then go manifest The Power of Eight.”  —James O’Dea, former president of the Institute of Noetic Sciences and author of Soul Awakening Practice “This book is a beautifully written blueprint to awaken us to the power we collectively possess to manifest miracles of healing, transformation and peace both in our lives, and in our world. If you only buy one book this season make it this one, for this is one of the most important and urgent messages of our time.” —Katherine Woodward Thomas, New York Times bestselling author of Conscious Uncoupling “Lynne’s research on intentional healing documents the long-recognized belief that mental qualities such as love and hope are actually the best antidotes in fending off disease, which feeds back and enhances the lives of each of the group’s participants. The Power of Eight is a powerful contribution to healing our planet.” —Bruce H. Lipton, PhD, stem cell biologist and bestselling author of The Biology of Belief “The perfect manual to heal your life, yourself, and others, which will teach you everything you need to know about accessing your true innate capacity—and how healing others is also how you heal yourself.”   —Dr. Joe Dispenza, bestselling author of Becoming Supernatural “An extraordinarily powerful and important achievement, chronicling a ten-year quest by Lynne McTaggart as she follows the evidence for the ‘power of eight’, wherever it leads. An inspiring and empowering portal into the profound powers of healing we all possess – and their exponential effects when we come together in groups.” —Jude Currivan, PhD, author of The Cosmic Hologram “A powerfully convincing account of the scientific study of the power of human intention. Beyond that, though, it stands out as a lighthouse in the fog to curious minds everywhere. It invites all who are grasping for clarity around their place in this grand universe to find a scientific ‘home’ of sorts for their spiritual quest.” —UnityWorldMinistries.org

After reading Lynn McTaggart's previous books, I had high expectations. Unfortunately, they did not pan out. This book is filled with anecdotal case reports of people's experiences as part of Lynn's groups. What they are practicing is manifesting, not intention, and this is old news. I came away with the sense that Lynn is trying to reinvent the wheel- healers have been teaching this method for ages, literally. I hoped to find research quantifying why group size was important, but alas nothing solid there either. The research review was worthwhile, as usual. The most exciting news in the book was a second hand report of the neuroscience of compassion meditation versus focus meditation to affect difference in brain areas areas and thus "joy/bliss" versus "peace" as an experience. I'm grateful that vital piece gave the book great value in my eyes.

This book is about the miraculous power we hold to heal ourselves, others, and the world. This power is unleashed the moment we stop thinking about ourselves and gather with others into a group.[1] But what is it about a group of people thinking a single thought at the same time that produces such dramatic effects?[2]Outbursts of passion in unisonThe only thing that appears to be needed is any sort of group.[3] Throughout the ages, small circles of people have held a special significance in many cultures and among indigenous groups.[4] Prayer groups have been used in most religions.[5] The greek word homothumadon is used to described group prayer in the Bible. The word itself is a compound of two words: homou ('in unison' or 'together'), and thumuous ('outbursts of passion' or 'rush along'). The word emphasizes group prayer as a passionate unity, with a single voice.[6]"When people are involved in a passionate activity […],they transmute from a solitary voiceinto a thunderous symphony."[7]A familiar feeling rarely experiencedGroup meditation and prayer certainly promote a sense of unity among the participants, but usually not as deep as in homothumadon.[8] In homothumadon, the participants move away from their isolated state of individuality into a pure bond with others. It's a state that is familiar when felt, but rarely experienced.[9] It has nothing to do with the outcome and everything with the act of participation.[10] There is one essential element: other human beings.[11]Working for the greater goodA sense of connectedness increases altruism. People have a natural desire to help when they temporarily step into a state of oneness.[12] Working for the greater good produces more than just a warm feeling — it's strengthening for both mind and body. There are health-giving effects in focusing on anyone besides yourself.[13]"Something about the desireto do something for someone else, with no strings attached or personal benefit, has an impact on health and wellbeingfar and above that of anything else […]"[14]ConclusionsLynne McTaggart provides glimpses into what's possible when we connect in homothumadon. A Power of Eight group is more than just a collection of separate individuals. They are not just connecting, they are merging.[15] It's as if the individuals in the group become one brain together. There's something more going on here that we don't understand.[16] Some things in our lives are just beyond our explanation or understanding.[17] It's a fascinating book!Notes:[1] Lynne McTaggarts, The Power of Eight: Harnessing the Miraculous Energies of a Small Group to Heal Others, Your Life and the World (Hay House, 2017), pp. xvi--xvii.[2] Ibid., p. 53.[3] Ibid., p. 50.[4] Ibid., pp. 55, 107.[5] Ibid., p. 56.[6] Ibid., p. 57.[7] Ibid., p. 61.[8] Ibid., p. 95.[9] Ibid., p. 97.[10] Ibid., p. 98.[11] Ibid., p. 140.[12] Ibid., p. 179.[13] Ibid., p. 185.[14] Ibid., p. 186.[15] Ibid., p. 225.[16] Ibid., p. 231.[17] Ibid., p. 233.

My family has started a power of eight group and have had amazing experiences. It has also brought us together. I loved that we can do it with each other in our own homes which are from Washington to Florida. Great Results.

This is writtten as though to lay audience, someone with materialist point of view who needs convincing as to scientific explanations, so for those farther along on a spiritual path this may grate. But the content is overall so interesting and inspiring. I purchased the Audible version. The narrator (not the author) has a nice voice and professional clear delivery but little connection to the content. I presumed the author must not have a great voice that she opted not to narrate herself. Big difference for the listener when the narrator isn't deeply connected to the material.

I've been a huge fan of Lynne McTaggart for a long time. This new release is powerful, practical, and inspiring! We have used the "Power of Eight" processes in our small group ministry and seen incredible, transformational change in the lives of our participants. This book is eye-opening, validating for those of us who believe in the power of group intention, and easy to implement in our own groups.

"The Power of Eight" book represents the following Albert Einstein quote for me and WILL for anyone that reads the book and then participates in group intention: “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead - his eyes are closed." THANK YOU Lynne McTaggart - aka Dalai Momma - for taking the time to compile and share this treatise called "The Power of Eight" - for it's truly a "gateway" into the mysterious - where authenticity awaits those willing to trek though it! Be well! Divine LOVE, blessings and peace!

Lynne McTaggart is a successful journalist who was willing to stretch beyond the accepted beliefs and to venture into the unknown, the yet to be discovered. This is never an easy journey for one to take because criticism is always thrown at those who go beyond the safe, predictable walls of the norm. But when you read her book you'll understand how groundbreaking the topics are and how important they are to our present time. The Power of Eight requires an open mind because the material is so radical. Learning about the research Lynne has brought together in her book could well be life-changing for the reader. Thank God for the perseverance she must have had to plow through the work of scientist around the globe and help the layperson can get some inclining of very complicated topics such as quantum mechanics. My immense gratitude goes out to Lynne for giving the human race a new, positive perspective of our basic nature and offering us a way to heal each other and the world by simply connecting at the “FIELD”, where our hearts and minds are no longer separated from each other. (Of note: All of her books are equally worth the reader’s viewing)

Really nice book with all things Canadian. Sturdy board book and nice size. Not one of those tiny board books. This was a gift for a Canadian friend who teaches two year old children. She loved it!

A lovely book with vibrant illustrations.Good quality card pages, cover and binding.

Love this book!! Great way to teach kids at a young age about our great country!!

Our baby received this book as a gift and he loves it! He chooses this book to read every night! He loves the pictures! There are many learning opportunities in the book. We talk about Canada and the word meanings, name and count animals. We trace the letters of the alphabet with our fingers and say the sound the letter makes. Love this book!

This is a beautiful book and a fun read for all ages. Delightful choices for each letter of the alphabet and beautiful pictures to accompany the letters.

Got this as a gift. Would have given it 5 stars except... "X is for Explore" ... seriously? How about O is for over-reaching?

I'm a Thoth deck user. I've used Rider-Waite, of course, but I found my energy resonated better with Thoth after I had done divination for a while. When I saw this deck, however, I felt I needed to have it, and boy was I ever right. The energy of this deck is unparalleled, and the book is written in a witty, wonderful, and wholly insightful way. It will reawaken any practiced reader, and gently guide any new user to the ways of the tarot. And the art on these cards resonates beautifully. I don't feel like I have to reach to grasp what they're trying to tell me. Maybe because it's more modern? Maybe because they're almost wholly "positive?" Whatever the reason, I absolutely love this deck and would recommend it to anyone. As soon as I charge and consecrate them, I will be integrating them into my daily practice for sure!

These cards are beautifully done with so much detail and energy in each card. I'm so excited to start using them for Client Readings. The deck comes in a box with a magnetic closure and also included is a full color book complete with all sorts of little tips and goodies to read through. There are even pages to jot down notes. My only worry is in the card stock used for the Tarot which is rather light...if not very careful I can see them getting bent rather quickly. That being said I would still recommend these in a heartbeat!

There is so much I love about this deck that I almost don’t know where to begin.Let’s start with the kit. For years, Llewellyn has produced beautiful decks in flimsy boxes that don’t protect the cards. Not anymore. This deck came in a beautiful set with a sturdier box with a magnetic closure that unfolds across the front. Inside is a blue ribbon you pull to remove the book and, under it, the cards. Do I still wish the deck itself had a smaller, fitted box like literally every other brand of tarot deck? Sure. But the box for this set was an impressive improvement over the boxes I’ve bought from Llewellyn for years. The book itself is in full color on glossy paper. Each card is reproduced full size next to the text about it. I love this so much! This has to be the most beautiful companion book for any deck I own. I only wish my older decks came with books like this. The writing itself is lovely. I’ve been a Deborah Blake fan for years, which is how this deck originally got on my radar. A lot of times when you’ve been buying tarot decks for years you don’t bother much with the book. This book is worth reading. Each card has a concise statement, for the Six of Swords it’s, “Anyplace but here.” Then on the next page it has a short meaning, “Sometimes you just have to get gone. Try not to take your troubles with you.” You could probably get a good enough sense of the card with just that, but she goes on to describe the card:“This witch isn’t going to spend one more minute where she is. She’s already on her way, with only a few necessities, because time is of the essence and sometimes it is better to get out with nothing than to hang on to things or people that are weighing you down. But she’s not travelling alone. It isn’t clear if she is helping her traveling companions or if they are helping her, but either way, they are in this together. An acrcane gesture to summon the wind and they’re off into an unknown future. All she knows is that anyplace will be better than whatever it is she’s leaving behind.”followed by a “Things to Consider” definition:“Sometimes there are situations you simply can’t fix: unhealthy relationships, jobs that beat you down, dangerous or unproductive circumstances. If you’re dealing with one of these, you have to ask yourself if it is time to cut your losses and just get out. And there is no shame in asking for help to do so, if you need to, or maybe someone else needs your help to escape their own bad situation. It’s okay to lend a hand, as long as you are sure you’re not going to end up carrying burdens that don’t belong to you.”I don’t know about you, but this is much more helpful than the tarot books I learned with, which ranged from big long detailed explanations for each card that went on for twenty pages or more each to books which described each card in a thesaurus of random words in the hopes that one of them would spark something. This book tells you something concrete about what each card might actually mean to you in a reading. The cards themselves are styled after kitschy retro witch postcards, so if that’s not your thing you probably won’t care for all the pointy hats and black cats. Witchy kitsch is one of my favorite things, so needless to say I love the illustrations. This is a bright cheerful deck with an upbeat outlook. In the Tower, for example, the proactive witch has burned this down on her own; she’s no victim of things falling apart but a player in destroying what wasn’t working to create what she wants in its place. If there’s one thing I wish were different about the deck, it’s the cardstock. These are fairly thin and it took some getting used to shuffling them without sending them flying across the room.In short, I love this deck. It’s a new favorite and I look forward to using it again and again for readings of all kinds.

I love the artwork of this deck. It came in a beautiful box with a magnet flap, and I was so blown away by the quality. And the book is glossy and lovely and wonderful! But then I excitedly unwrapped the cards from the plastic and realized there was one part of this deck that was not so great. The card stock for the actual cards. It is thin and feels so fragile and easy to bend. I cannot imagine using these regularly, or even just sometimes. The idea of shuffling them is unnerving because they are basically printed on a step above a sheet of paper. My business cards are thicker card stock than these! And it is so sad because they are beautiful and I love the artwork, the book and the box. But the cards are not at all for everyday, they are far too thin and delicate for regular use of any kind. I was very disapointed, which sucks because they really made me happy art and style wise. I just don't understand why anyone would print their deck like this! If there is a reprint on higher quality card stock i would immediately purchase them.

I absolutely love the art on the cards and the book is so easy to use and understand. It explains everything in a way that is really easy to apply to your readings. There are little one or two line explanations and paragraph-or-so thorough explanations for every card, and every few pages or so there's a section for notes which is cool. Overall 10/10 the book and cards are awesome and good quality, you can tell the creators really put their hearts into making them.

What drew me to this deck was that the artwork has such a "storybook" feel to it! And unlike my other decks (I'm still new to tarot but have gone on a bit of a shopping spree), there aren't any borders on the cards-- which made them stand out even more when I saw them. The deck comes with a decent-sized box that has a magnetic closing and guidebook. The guidebook has good general information before diving into the card meanings. The card meanings have additional information in a "things to consider" section. I'm looking forward to using this deck; it has a good overall vibe.

this is an amazing deck!! the artwork is lovely and the deck has an awesome personality. my deck is rather blunt and i love the honesty! if youre thinking of buying this deck, do so; it's definitely worth it

Retrieving a Rich Understanding of Spiritual Friendship"Courageous and thought provoking. This is a book that challenges all of us--whatever our sexual experience or longings may be--to think more truthfully about the meaning of love and the complex ways in which our communities either stifle or nurture it."--Richard B. Hays, Duke Divinity School"Remarkable. Here is a book everyone interested in Christianity, and everyone interested in friendship, can profit from reading."--Alan Jacobs, Honors College, Baylor University"An elegant, theologically rich plea on behalf of the love of friendship that uncovers fresh ways to improvise on a lost Christian tradition of committed spiritual friendship."--Peter Leithart, president, Theopolis Institute, Birmingham, Alabama"Honest and poignant, Spiritual Friendship is like a conversation with a good friend who has learned much from books but more from loving and being loved by others."--Eve Tushnet, author of Gay and Catholic: Accepting My Sexuality, Finding Community, Living My Faith"Love is the most complicated thing in the world--and even more so for gay and lesbian Christians who have experienced a vocation to celibacy. Ever since I first read Wesley Hill's *Washed and Waiting* about four years ago, I've made a point to read just about every article and blog post he writes. Same-sex attraction is not an abstract theological or political issue, but a very personal one since I've experienced it from a very young age. My journey started out during my teenage years by reading books from the Christian ex-gay movement, which were mainly pseudo-scientific psychological analyses of why people have homosexual inclinations and how to diminish or eliminate them. Needless to say, when my homoerotic desires did not go away, I was very discouraged. Also, my personal background did not fit the typical ex-gay narrative of why people are gay. For example, I always had a close relationship with my two loving parents and was never abused by anyone. Now in my twenties, my viewpoint on how to live faithfully as a Christian with same-sex attraction has shifted.Wesley Hill writes from the perspective that being gay is a ultimately consequence of the fact that we live in a broken, fallen universe, but that these experiences can be redeemed by Christ to allow us gay Christians to love and be loved by others in meaningful ways. The goal is not an elimination of same-sex temptation per se, but holiness and chastity in relationship with God and others. Hill is firmly grounded in the traditional sexual ethic which sees marriage as being between one man and one woman for life. This means that many gay Christians may be called to long-term celibacy, and this poses some hard challenges for the man or woman who embarks on this path. The book Spiritual Friendship has been such an encouragement to me as I seek to pursue Christ-honoring friendship with other brothers (and sisters) in the church. When reading the book, one of the biggest epiphanies for me was that committed spiritual friendships deserve a place of honor within the church, just as we honor the institution of marriage. However, these deep and intimate friendships do not happen accidentally but require intentional ways of fostering and nurturing those relationships. The most poignant chapter for me was the one in which Wesley tells the story of losing an intimate friendship with a male friend after his friend began a romantic relationship with a girl. This strikes close to home because I've experienced a similar scenario with my best friend. Probably the most discouraging part of friendship is the fear that these friends may be temporary. It is hard to invest so much emotional capital in a relationship only to fear that your friend will not always be there with you. As C. S. Lewis says, "To love at all is to be vulnerable." Borrowing from Tom Stoppard's play, *The Invention of Love,* Hill's metaphor for this kind of friend is a piece of ice held in your fist. No matter how tightly you hold the piece of ice, it will eventually melt and disappear, leaving only raw pain in its absence. Friendship, Hill says, is not always a bed of roses, but a call to suffering. The answer, however, is not to seal yourself off from spiritual friendships but to pursue them in faith, knowing that Christ calls us in the church to a sort of vowed spiritual siblinghood. While acknowledging the very real experience of suffering in many relationships, Hill also relates other very positive personal experiences of enjoying close ties of friendship with other men and women, even to the point of sharing living arrangements with a married couple and their children. He also relates several examples from biblical and church history where two men or two women have loved each other in ways that are not romantic, but are just as strong and intense. In the final chapter, he give some very practical advice on how churches can help foster an environment where these kinds of friends flourish. The book ends in a vision of hope and expectation. This is a challenging book that all Christians would benefit from reading, whether in church leadership or not. I only wish there were more books on this subject, but I've been very encouraged at the writing that has recently emerged in blogs such as [...]

I think the author has the best intentions, and he tells a compelling story. And he has sound insights about friendship. Yes, it is a greatly neglected thing in our society, and we suffer for it; particularly men. And I think he's right that those with sexual attraction to the same sex will benefit from more friends and deeper friendships. All this is to the good. That said, I conclude that the author works from an anthropology that is faulty. Namely, he seems to think that a homosexual orientation is something God intends, and is a positive good. I cannot agree with that; and while I don't question the author's sincere Christian beliefs -- nor his faithfulness as a Christian -- I do think this is idea will not work from a Christian point of view. The Catholic view -- I am a Catholic, and yes, I realize the author is not -- is that while a sexual attraction to the same sex is not, per se, immoral, it is "intrinsically disordered." This makes far better sense. Also, I found myself wondering if the author was going through a really fragile stage in his life when he wrote this. There is a neediness in his account of friendship that perhaps many others can identify with, I imagine, but is not -- to my mind -- really healthy. In other words, I wonder if the issue for the author isn't his sexual attraction to other guys as much as co-dependency? It is good to want and seek out strong, healthy, deep friendships. But it isn't good to be overly dependent and needy. I found myself wondering how well the author saw one bleeding into the other? Finally, the author is really weak in arguing for some sort of "vowed friendship." He tries to argue that this is well attested in Christian tradition. Well, of course, you can find an example of almost anything in 2,000 years of history if you look hard enough, and squint just the right way; but the evidence is thin and not persuasive. Relying on John Boswell is a huge tell. He points to Aelred, and, then Aelred again, and...how about some more Aelred?Bottom line, I think the author has valid insights; but we must wait for someone else to take up the baton of reviving friendship in our time, especially for the benefit of those who have erotic same-sex feelings and intend to be chaste.

I was very excited when I bought this book. It did not disappoint. I am a celibate gay Christian who struggles with loneliness a lot of the time. Wes Hill's book provides me hope that being gay and holding to a traditional sexual ethic is not impossible. Hill introduces Evangelicals to rich medieval concept of spiritual friendships and provides a narrative for those of us who are gay and celibate that we do not have to be consigned to a life loneliness.Hill talks a lot about how friendship has become diminished in modern times. I very much appreciated this critique. Overall this book was very helpful for me and I learned a lot from it.

This is an excellent book which not everyone will like.If you want a book that you can skim through with lots of lists that you can quickly digest, put into use and immediately improve your songwriting, then buy something else like Robin Frederick's book "Shortcuts to Hit Songwriting: 126 Proven Techniques for Writing Songs That Sell", which is a great book in its own right:(http://www.amazon.com/Shortcuts-Hit-Songwriting-Techniques-Writing/dp/0982004001 ) .This book requires work, dedicated concentration and more than anything else, practice. You can easily live with this book for 6 months or more. Pattison's approach is very analytical and it deals only with lyrics and how to communicate them in a way that best transmits the emotional effect which the songwriter has in mind. The book goes far beyond Pattison's Coursera Songwriting course and his Youtube video lectures.I have found that for me, his techniques work best in rewriting my songs. There is so much here, that it is difficult to implement it all in the real-time process of songwriting. But once I have written a song, I can go back and apply his techniques to improve my songs. Especially interesting is his technique to use the 5 rhyme-types (perfect, family, additive/subtractive, assonance, consonance) and a rhyming dictionary as a search engine to brainstorm ideas to write a song from a concept or a title. I have never heard anyone else use this method, but I find that not only does it work for me, it also opens my ear to more easily find rhymes other than the perfect rhyme. Some people will not have the patience to work through this book, and for them, it will be a waste of money to buy. But I really like the book and it has taught me a lot of useful information to improve my songwriting.

the ideas and systems being set in place very early on in this book have gotten me more focused and thoughtful of the craft. it is a great book, one I knew I would want in a hardcopy, not kindle, as it feels better reading it in a book for some reason. that said, if you are struggling with writing lyrics or just need a boost, this is top advice from a master of the method. very much worth the money. there are a lot of excercises. I am doing some of them, most, but not doing all if they seem too much. there is a lot of emphasis on a writing class, which sounds nice, but I am not in one, so this is the next best thing. I think people already writing lyrics would do well to buy this.

I have never been a lyric writier. I wanted to remedy that deficiency. But do I have the talent, creativity, skills to do it? The books I had bought to help me weren't helping. They dispensed facts. Prosody, rhyme, form, blah, blah. This book is different. Pat is a real, breathing teacher. From the first chapter, he has you on a program designed to rewire the way you think--to harvest the rich garden of word memories you have stored away in your brain. To systematically build tables of nouns and verbs that will serve your song. To then really understand rhyme and prosidy. You learn by doing--not by reading and examining other people's songs. It's all about you and your innate skills plus the necessary new skills to harness them. I feel liberated!

I heard about this author and book from CD Baby’s podcast, DIY Musician. After songwriting for over two years, this is my first lyric help book I have purchased and while I’m only on page 27, so far I have not been disappointed. Pattison gives a nomenclature for techniques I was already using and expands and encourages the reader in those areas. It has been a creative blast for someone not only to give me permission but to give me an assignment to engage daily in creative writing. Regarding the very first exercise, daily 10-minute Object Writing, instead of picking random objects, pick objects/concepts within current song ideas you’re developing and apply his other concepts within that time. Powerful exercise. Thank you, Pat! Write on, creatives!!

Great book! I have been trying to tap into my creative side a bit more and get over my writer's block. This is definitely helping! It goes in depth on the structures of writing, rhyming, metaphors, and tons more. I especially love object writing, as it's helped a lot with new material and tapping into the "showing" side of my lyric writing and just seeing things in general in a more visual way. I definitely recommend this book, along with The Artist's Way.

Like all art forms, lyric writing is subjective. For some, this book is a 5 star eye opener, for others it will be a 2 star snooze. Me, I'm kind of right in the middle. It can be a little over analytical, for my taste, but there are some very useful tools in in here that will definitely expand your horizons. I'd be hard pressed to believe that any writer couldn't find value on these pages. No doubt I will be implementing several techniques going forward. Go in with an open mind and you'll find this a resourceful read.

Bought one for me. After browsing through the book I thought my friend would also find this useful so I bought one for him as well. This gives you strategies and homework to help with your song writing. I am only a couple chapters in but I like what I have seen so far.

The Night Garden, by Polly Horvath

From School Library Journal

Gr 4–6—World War II hasn't affected 12-year-old Franny's rustic, idyllic life on Vancouver Island, BC. While her mother Sina sculpts, she writes and explores the many gardens tended by her father, Old Tom. But there is one garden he forbids Franny to enter: the ancient night garden. Legend says that a person can make one wish while in the night garden and it will come true, but that wish cannot be undone. Contented Franny has little interest in wishes until the family's peace is disrupted: a neighbor suddenly leaves her three children with Sina while she goes off to prevent her husband, a mechanic who works on top-secret military planes, from doing "something terrible." The neighbor kids and Franny become embroiled in the mystery surrounding the mechanic when letters from him arrive containing ominous clues to his intent. The children see the night garden as their only chance to help, so they defy Old Tom and test the garden's legend. Franny's first-person narration, rich with droll insights, balances the plot's tension and reveals her awareness of the extraordinary magic that envelops her farm, "alive and breathing with suppressed something." National Book Award winner Horvath writes with accessible eloquence, making what would be fantastical in another setting quite plausible on this island populated with whimsical, winsome characters. VERDICT Thoughtful, hilarious, and moving; repeated readings reveal even more to appreciate in this superbly crafted tale. An essential purchase for all middle grade collections.—Marybeth Kozikowski, Sachem Public Library, Holbrook, NY

Review

“Horvath infuses her novel with such heart, zest, and humor in the small moments that she’s created a book her devoted fan base will cherish. Notably, the denizens of Vancouver Island have a delicious lack of separation between adult and child―all are wholeheartedly curious, beautifully flawed, and deeply amusing.” ―Booklist, starred review“Events glide from the domestic to offbeat to the supernatural without any friction, creating a world where anything is possible . . . [A] story of community and love and families in all their messy glory.” ―The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, starred review“Horvath’s bright prose and unerring sense of timing keep us turning pages to arrive at the book’s final, transcendently profound, scene.” ―Horn Book“The quirky characters and Franny’s dry-humored narration stand out as Horvath invokes classic literary elements of orphans, secret gardens, and found families.” ―Publishers Weekly“Thoughtful, hilarious, and moving; repeated readings reveal even more to appreciate in this superbly crafted tale. This is a strange and funny tale with quirky characters. Going into it I had expected a Gothic Middle-School mystery with a hint of paranormal but got something quite different. Let's put it this way, if Anne of Green Gables, The Secret Garden and Lemony Snicket were mixed together out would pop The Night Garden as their bookish concoction.Franny (ie. Anne) is our wayward orphan who speaks her mind and is left with Sina and Old Tom (Marilla and Matthew). We have the eerie Night Garden (a dark, murky, supernatural version of Mary Lennox' famous garden) and a mishmash cast of peculiar characters (a la Snicket). The off-beat and often funny dialogue made this book for me. It had the right amount of sarcasm and great one-liners that had me, quite literally, chuckling out loud. But ... I was surprised and more than a little let down that the Night Garden, the title 'character', barely made it into the book and was underutilized. I had expected less of the missing plane mystery (which just wasn't riveting) and more focus around the eerie goings on in the garden. In the end, this is a strange tale with some memorable, quirky characters, eye-catching cover and solid writing. There's a lot going on and for the most part it worked but more focus on the mystery and the Night Garden would have made this a better read for me.Disclaimer: My sincere thanks to Puffin Canada for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Franny, 12, and her parents, Sina and Old Tom, live a peaceful life on a farm on Vancouver Island during WW2. Their troubles revolve around the creative process (Sina is a sculptor and Franny writes.) and the seasonal work of the farm — until Crying Alice, their neighbor, arrives with an unusual request. She wants Franny, Sina and Old Tom to watch over her 3 kids while she tries to prevent her husband, an air force base mechanic, from doing something stupid. Supernatural events, crazy mysteries and very bad cooking ensue! Polly Horvath writes with such quirky warmth, and has such a multiplicity of odd mostly well meaning characters, that you won’t want to leave the world of the novel. Recommended for readers 9 – 12 as well as anyone who loves a good story. The beauty of the book is its love of family and the willingness of some to sacrifice their greatest gifts for others to be able to hold onto family.
