When his search takes a more dramatic and serious direction he turns for help and legal protection to his half-brother, Mickey Haller.At the same time, Bosch gets tied up almost full time with a major case for the small police force of San Fernando - a serial rapist who gains entry by cutting through the screen door of victims' houses. The hunt for the "Screen Cutter" heats up when more victims are identified and a criminal profile suggests that it is only a matter of time before the rapist also becomes a killer.Connelly showed his skills in weaving Bosch's investigatory skills between two totally different cases. It was certainly a change not to see him constantly doing battle with his police superiors. There is not much background about his personal life as his daughter Maddy is at college and only has a cameo role.Over the last year, I have been revisiting and enjoying several of Michael Connelly's earlier books. IMHO this one stands out as one of the best he has written and maintains his top place in US crime fiction and showcased Connelly's skills in keeping this long-running series alive. We will certainly see a lot more of Harry Bosch in the future.I was able to review this book now as it was published in Australia on 24 October 2016 and won't be released in the US until 1 November 2016. It certainly deserves to be in the bestsellers list leading up to the festive season.

Dr. Eric Manheimer's book "Twelve Patients:Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital is an amazing and very realistic view inside the most amazing health care system in the world. Bellevue Hospital is the flagship hospital of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation covering at least 11 major medical centers in the NYC metropolitan area. I had the privilege of working for Dr. Manheimer as Director of Obstetrics at Bellevue Hospital. Reading this book took me back to some of the most exciting, stimulating and challenging years of my career. It was an amazing experience working under Dr. Manheimer's tutelage as our Medical Director. His open door policy, genuine concern for his physicians and mostly his patients is palpable in this book. Eric (as he preferred us to call him) has medicine in his genes---his father practiced internal medicine, even making house calls into his late 80s. Eric often accompanied him on house calls as a child. As you will in this book, this is where he became "imprinted" with the "art of medicine." It is really uplifting to see a Medical Director of a huge system operate with true "esprit de corps" taking care of his patients and his faculty. You will get to discover and appreciate the complete transcection of society (national and international) that receives health care at Bellevue Hospital. You will see the inside mechanics of the oldest hospital in the US and one of the largest teaching hospitals today.I bought this book and took it on a weekend get-away with my family----what a mistake!!!!!! I had to fight my family off from taking this book from me----they too were wholly engrossed in the contents having "lived" Bellevue through me during my tenure there. Subsequently we have bought many more copies. As some who reads 2-3 novels a week, I give this book a 10/10!David Seubert, MD

I have always enjoyed non fiction books about medicine. While well written, I didn't enjoy this much. I guess the main problem was the patients the doctor selected to write about. I didn't find them very interesting and there was no continuity as the book progressed. I was fine for about the first 15% and after that just wanted it to end. I should have simply laid it aside, but instead struggled through it. I applaud the doctors outstanding career and appreciate all the good he accomplished, I'm sorry I didn't care much for the book.

As a public hospital it serves the needs of those populations not well-served by the huge infrastructure of America's hospital and larger medical industries. Through its vast doors come the immigrant and minority people who, for hundreds of years, have gathered in New York City for its challenging environment of work, wealth, and freedom, as well as providing a home for all who come. Riker's Island, the largest prison complex in the country provides a vast prison facility for those who comit crimes or are waiting trial for offenses ranging from simple drug arrests to the most horrendous of violent acts. The serial killer known as Son of Sam was imprisoned there for several years awaiting trial. The relationship between these two institutions and the communities surrounding them provides the context for this enormously engaging and challenging exploration of the American health care system at the nexus where it is most challenged. Using twelve patients, including himself, as examples, Manheimer explores the nooks and crannies of an over-challenged system to provide care for those most in need.In what amounts to a series of harrowing and inspiring case studies, he portrays the capacity of this system to meet the physical and emotional needs of those most in need of its powers. This doctor connects his own lived experiences with his patients and his readers to build "swift trust" (or even slow trust). I think we could all benefit if we felt heard and in turn invested in truly listening to each other.

Ari outlines his method for living a balanced life (and actually enjoying yourself) instead of the 'hustle' and 24/7 work, work, work. Interesting ideas that create time for yourself and productivity. This is not drivel by any stretch. Good for the business person or homemaker looking to sharpen their time management acumen.

I would have preferred that the anecdotes were replaced with more information on how to do something, particularly as the book progressed. It looked like it was building towards how to get a virtual assistant involved in taking some of your work, but it never got there.

At a stage where I am becoming time poor, this book gave some insight on managing tasks and day to day activities, as well as being able to automate or delegate mundane activities.I woulld recommend this book to friends and peers that are becoming overwhelmed with life.

Ana Gomez has some great techniques for working with children doing EMDR. I have also attended one of her conferences and find this book and great addition. EMDR is complicated when working with children who have had long complex trauma and abuse that was on going for years. The work needs to go slow and kids can be hard to engage. All of Ana's work is a huge help in working with this group of children.

A story within a story, beautifully told saturated in history during the upheaval of politics in 1930’s and 1940's Germany and Italy.Richly defined characters project wisdom and wit as well as love, fear, and anger. Female figures portray women of substance.Balson moves deftly between the two interconnected stories of saving an elderly woman’s priceless wine vineyards in Tuscany from an aggressive corporation in present day, to Hitler’s rise to power and the devastating impact on Jews, focusing on one particular family. Balson aptly depicts how little Jews understood of the horrors awaiting them.As Germany played a leading role in arts and science on the world stage, music plays a center role in this engrossing and intelligent novel.Following the quest for justice, the novel proves Balson’s best work since, “Once We Were Brothers”.Excellent writing, excellent story.Political references extend to the historic context of Hitler’s Germany.

I have read every book in the series and this one was meticulously researched but I had some problems with it. The author did not utilize Liam and Catharine enough. They should have been more of an integral part of the novel. There was one main villain and I thought he was overused. We are in the holocaust with nazi's everywhere yet the book is set all around this one evil man. A new character is introduced at the end and it did not work for me. I know she was needed because of the storyline. But to just put her in there bothered me a great deal. It lost its cohesiveness. Lastly, I was unhappy with the ending. All the other four books left me uplifted. This one left me sad. Spoiler: I had hoped for young love to triumph despite the atrocities of the war.

The plot centers on Liam and Catherine (from the other books in this series) who agree to help a friend save his family's vineyard. This was a great story, involves, love, hate, mystery, set against the Nazi invasion in 1940's.I really enjoy this author, who is relatively new to me. His writing is easy, flows, and he has the ability to bring you right into the characters as if you were a fly on the wall. I can highly recommend this book, suggest you at least read his 1st book ONCE WERE WERE BROTHERS to get the background on Liam and Catherine. All the books in this series are very good reads, as with any series, some better than others but this book falls in the "better" category.

The author is wonderful at building a character! This story takes place in Germany, Tuscany and the USA. Good story which has a little bit of everything in it. It’s tearful as it takes place in Germany at the beginning of the war, so make sure you have some tissues nearby.

I’ve read all of Balson’s books and liked them. This one is weak in premise but an enjoyable read. From why Liam and Catherine are called to Italy to the recurring crossing of characters via “fate” to the sudden happy enough ending. But, a. Easy enjoyable read.

I love Ronald Balson's books. While I write and sell lots of legal thrillers there aren't a lot of writers, generally, I like to read. But Ronald is one guy whose books really reflect the best of fiction writing that can be found today. His ability to weave 1940's classical music with 2018's real estate conveyancing and make it a compelling read is just genius. Thank you for writing, Ronald. Please keep them coming!

I would give this book a 10 if I could. It had everything. Great characters, well researched both about music and the occupation in WW11 Europe. This author does it again! Can't wait for more stories with Cat and Liam. The story is about love, courtroom drama, justice, family, sacrifice and selflessness. Nazi's are also part of the past and present in this story.

I loved this book and this author. He writes the best books. This is another of his World War II stories and it is as good as Once We Were Brothers and Karolina’s Twins. Somehow His third book Saving Sophie slipped by me and you can bet as soon as I finish this, I am getting it on my kindle. I hope he is busy writing another book. 🤗❤️
