Palm Springs Modern provides a superb photo tour of a handful of landmark homes that defined the 'modern' style in the 1950s and '60s. Because wealthy businessmen and celebrities could afford edgier architecture, the authors focus on these homes -- with a welcome chapter on the talented William Cody in between. If you want a scholarly treatise on modernism in architecture, buy another book. If you want a tantalizing sample of some of the best work, PSM is fine. By the time modernism made its way into mass production homes, it lost much of its inventiveness and aesthetic. Those familiar with the Palm Springs area will notice that the Alexanders' ubiquitous 'butterfly' rooflines have become almost cliche, while the Loewy house and most of the PSM subjects remain exotic.Do you need to own PSM before buying or designing a home for the California desert? Clearly the answer is NO. But if you want a virtual tour of some of the most inspired homes of the genre, PSM belongs on your coffee table. And yes, if you live in the Midwest or Northeast you would do yourself a service by putting this away in a closet somewhere during the winter.

I rather liked this book. Yes it's gushy and fluffy. I particularly liked the part about Walter Annenberg's interest in ecology after he turned 250 acres of desert into a personal Euro-Disney. However the pictures are nice, if somewhat disembodied from their context. The text is ridiculous, but I'm trying to get worked up to buy property there, so I was mainly interested in images. Of course, there is nothing useful in the way of floor plans, site maps, etc. However, if you live in the Midwest or New England and want to get really depressed about your current weather, this is the book to buy.

A classic. If you've never been to Palm Springs, you'll be catching the next flight after leafing thru this fine book. Gorgeous photos of simply incredible buildings. Palm Springs has a quality and character unlike any other "resort" town. The fabulous architecture of the mid-century building boom and a renewed appreciation of the designs of that period has revitalized (again) the Palm Springs area. If you can't visit Palm Springs personally, then pour a martini, sit back and enjoy this book. It's almost like being there!

Purchased as a Valentine's Day gift, while visiting Palm Springs during Modernism weekâ€¦perfect!

Great quality pictures and context

I love this book! Great depiction of famous mid-century homes and architects.

This book does serve a purpose, in that it gives a peek into a handful of distinguished Palm Springs residences. Sure, we get to see a few pictures of the famous Kaufmann house (by Neutra), and a few other houses that pretty much look like it, photographed in chilly and clinical detail, accompanied by a chilly monograph. But we have no sense of how these houses may have inspired more ordinary buildings in town, like the wonderful Alexander subdivisions -- which I'm told comprise the most consistent collection of modern suburban architecture in the USA. Where are the houses that regular folks live in? A few crumbs could have been thrown to the masses ... I would have liked some gas stations, some cool furniture, a dash of innovative interior design, perhaps. Go ahead and buy it, but I can pretty much guarantee that as a coffee table book, it's fairly unappetizing fare. And it doesn't much relate to the familiar Palm Springs modern style we all know and love.

Palm Springs Modern illustrates (in photos) a collection of homes by designers who tested design concepts in the harsh desert environment that complimented, and indeed enhanced the outcome. Those of us who seek inspiration and documentation of the modernist period will find this volumn satisfying. It is not a scholarly book, nor is the text particularly deep in theory of architectural modernism. And it doesn't matter that some of the homeowners were celebrities. What really matters is that there are so many fine examples of modernist architecture and in such close proximity.

Great book and arrived in great condition. Met my expectations. Was better than I expected actually. Very informative book, and was exactly what I wanted.

Not what I expected. It looks and feels like a dated textbook-- the paper quality isn't great, and nothing's in color (which is a real shame for a book on marine biology). The material itself is okay. It's fairly basic, so I'd say it's more appropriate for students in grades ~5-9 who have yet to learn anything about these mammals.

I felt that some of the sections were set up incorrectly. I think there might be a better way to format the book.

An excellent introduction to marine mammals. The short length of the text forced it to be less in depth than I would have liked.

I bought this book because I needed it for a class. It came fast enough and was in good condition. Great book for the price.

We were in Singapore for 10 days and we made good use of this little book. It is easy to carry around, has a decent map, and has good details for each place you would like to visit. In general, we find the Top 10 books to be very helpful. It's great to have a Lonely Planet book with all of it's detail, but if you are traveling to many places as we are, it's nice to have smaller books like this series of Top 10.

The PLUS: 5 Stars!The guide takes a pyramidal approach to the sights of your destination. So you slowly can work yourself through the areas that really interest you by easily skipping things you would not want to see or visit at all.It also makes it easy to find the things that are important to you because the descriptions are small enough and pictures further make it easy to attract your interest or pass things by.The MINUS: 4 Stars!The good about the Maps is that they are there at all and also that there is an index of some streets.The contained foldout maps though helpful when there is nothing else at all are not my favorite because they are quite small and are more an overview to identify the area where something is to be found on a better more detailed map. The same maps as the foldouts are also on a separate map that is detachable. This is a good idea but they are way to small and hard to read especially in dim light and in an awkward format to be really useful. - When available, I rather get a local map from the tourist office and transfer my destinations to it.SUMMARY: 5 Stars!This guide is an extremely useful sightseeing guide and small enough to be carried with you all the time for quick reference. It also allows you to choose the amount of detail you want to follow for the town: top 10 Highlights - top 10 to each highlight - top ten to some general categories like museums, bars, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and also some specific categories just for this destination like stunning places to worship or top 10 hawker centers and food courts.Insider tips or as they call the sections: "Street smart" round up this little guide. The maps are OK but could be improved. The deficiency of the maps though should not detract from the overall usefulness of this guide for your destination. This is true for a first time visitor with limited or all kinds of time and also for the return visitor, who wants to to repeat some destinations in more detail or avoid the same old top ten but venture out into new territory.

We have frequently used the DK Eyewitness Guides - Top 10 books when we are going to be in a city for just 2 or 3 days. I already had the paper version of this book, but thought that perhaps if I downloaded the Kindle version, I could save the weight of the actual book while traveling. This could be a huge weight savings since we would have four DK books in total!I was disappointed in the Kindle version because the photo images are extremely low resolution, whether in original form or zoomed. Also, the master and mass transit maps are missing, though the smaller maps are present. I am glad I only ordered one of the four books in Kindle. Unfortunately, the Kindle versions cannot replace the hard copies unless I take along just the book covers and jackets, leaving the text pages at home. The master maps are on the inside of the front covers.

The title of this valuable 128 guide is misleading--it doesn't cover only the top 10 sights in Singapore but rather is a comprehensive guide to the place, covering, for example, places to see along the Singapore River, museums, Sentosa, the Singapore Flyer (along with a guide to what you can see from it), the Botanic Gargens, places of worship to see, and neighborhoods including Chinatown and Little India. It also provides information on such things as passports, taxis, and the best sort of place to exchange money. Before I went, I read through this book with appreciation. Each place identified in this guide is located on fold-out maps included in this book inside the front and back covers, a quite valuable feature in itself for locating places. I found its bits of advice sometimes very helpful, such as when it alerted me to the EZ Links cards you can use on the MRT (subway)(which you can buy at a MRT station), its mention of the Burgis Street "night market," and its remark that "bumboats are the best way to see the Singapore River." Generally though I find it best to use the website tripadvisor as a guide to select hotels rather than this guidebook, or the other guidebooks to Singapore I had purchased, but this is more a limitation belonging to guidebooks in general rather than of this particular guidebook.

I'm planning a trip to Singapore in the near future, and I always buy the DK Top Ten books as the starting point before I buy a more informative book. So when it comes to learning something new about a city and wanting to see what the major attractions are, DK helps you plan them out and give you enough information to start to mentally plan out the trip.I would never use the DK Top Ten books as the sole means to plan a trip, since they're meant for quick reference and a high level overview. Still, time after time, these books always reside in my cargo pants pockets on trips and are borrowed by others because it's quick and to the point.For the price, you can't beat it, but you'll want to shop for another book after you get this.

This book is out of date; it has an updated cover but the content is old. DK books are usually excellent; this one is not quite right. Buy something more current.

I bought this guide prior to a business trip to Singapore. I've been there for four days and as I was working, I had only the evenings to see some of the city. The guide has been pretty good to take me through the basics, and I think it was worth the money spent. Most of the attractions are closed during the evening, and the guide helped me find what to see in this nice city. The thing that I disagree is that this series have a top ten to everything, but the world is not flat, so they are always filling the lower positions with uninteresting things. Still, the descriptions will certainly help you decide what to see on a short schedule.

This book teaches you how to simplify complex scenes into manageable drawings. If you have ever tried to draw from life or even from a landscape photograph you know your first problem is the complexity of the visual information, it is hard to know where to start and what to include. I will share a good experience I had with this book that I think shows how this book can help you get started and make your way through sketch of a complex subject.I bought the book some months ago and read it with enjoyment on the Kindle app on my ipad. One new thought that stayed with me is that all the human figures in a drawing have their eye level on the horizon line. I understood the idea but didn't really believe real life worked that way, it seemed too good to be true. Recently I was on the beach in Florida, the beach is one of the few places you get an unobstructed view of the actual horizon, and sure enough, I could see that the people in front of me had their eye level on the horizon line, no matter how far they were from my observation point. Experimenting with the horizon line in photos inspired me to look up this subject in Richards' text (a benefit of having the ebook-it is with me when I travel). I read the relevant sections in Richards and then proceeded to use his method to draw an ink and water-color pencil sketch of his Fig. 2.30, which is a photo of a cathedral, a pretty challenging subject, which has a lot of people at various distances in the foreground. The text has images of several stages of the development of his drawing of the scene, which are helpful to understand his procedure. In about 3 hours I had an ink and watercolor pencil sketch I was happy with (no doubt Richards could do this in about 20 minutes). [Hey Amazon! If we could upload images to reviews I could post my sketch here!] More importantly, the horizon line idea was really making sense to me and Richards' method for sketching had prove its usefulness for getting a nice sketch of a complicated city landscape.By the way, this is one book where the potential of the ebook format is realized. Most of the photos and drawings will enlarge to full screen if you double click on them, and you can pinch and zoom-invaluable for sketching from the photos in the book. I've noticed many print art books have the reference photo too small for you to do your own work from them. The video links are really helpful as well. And Richards has a nice encouraging writing style that gives you confidence as you try to follow his suggestions. Overall highly recommended.

I love this book! James Richards has created a drawing guide that is so joyful, exuberant and empowering that anyone who draws or anyone who wishes to draw should add this to their permanent library. This book transcends the mere how-to and reaches right to the core of why we draw and how we create. Both the text and the illustrations offer powerful insights into the creative process. I love how each page of text offers a core idea that is highlighted and reinforced by the lay-out and how is page is simply beautiful to look at.This book offers some of the clearest and most straightforward explanations of technique that I have ever come across. It makes an important point, that in this rapidly changing world, it is not the tool, but the artist's vision that matters. Vignettes by fellow sketchers offer additional insight into the creative process, while the final section offers a philosophy and a way of thinking about the relationship between hand drawing and digitalization that clearly shows the synergy between these different methods of expression.This book is a must have for anyone seeking to understand and refine their own creative process.

I usually do a lot of figure drawing until I accidentally saw this book on Amazon. I was checking it out and got really inspired by Mr Richards work. I bought the book and read it cover to cover. I tried to copy a lot of his drawings and have developed such an appreciation for this craft. The videos are very valuable and informative. I have watched them numerous times. While I haven't finished the whole book (I'm waiting to read the last section, which is about presentation graphics), I want to give this book a big thumbs up. I'm a landscape arch student and I'm not the most confident with freehand drawing. I always find myself saying 'someone here knows how to make this easier and they just aren't telling me.' Well someone does know and he wrote a great book about it. Just about everything you want to know is in this book. I filled the margins with notes, tips, and tricks Richards discusses in the book that have already helped me and inspired me to be a less anxious sketcher. He's an urban sketcher and it shows, but the style he uses in the book is certainly appropriate for designers as well. I found myself sketching dozens of pages of people and cars because he makes it so easy to figure out the proportions and level of appropriate detail. Those are the two things I was most anxious about. I recommend this book if you need some inspiration, some cheerleading, or someone to tell you exactly how to develop your own style of freehand drawing.

This is a terrific book on sketching, straightforward, simple, and unpretentious. Easy to follow instructional descriptions and good graphic examples. Freehand Drawing and Discovery is a required textbook in my Landscape Architecture Drawing course.

This is a wonderful book both for its intended purpose, which is to inspire designers to use sketching to move the design process along, and to those of us who just want to capture the world around us on our sketch pad. I don't aspire to be an "urban sketcher" but I have found that many of the principles apply equally well to the drawings I work on when I'm hiking, traveling or simply out in the country, This book is really about how to see the beauty that is around you and move toward capturing that essence by getting out of your own way.

Truly an outstanding book. The illustrations are wonderful, full of crisp ink drawing with great use of color. Very architectural with extremity helpful instructions. I would highly recommend to architects, landscape architects and urban planners.

No body could get away from statistics these days. The major reason I think people loath statistics is that it is presented in a very dry manner. Reader has to feel that statistics apply to real life also and for that matter it is up to the author to make it "live". Sadly, here also that "zip" is missing; however if somebody has interested you in statistics before, these types of books let you practice and be more confident. These are easy marks in any entrance and more practice may make sure you get all of them.

This book created for self assessment based on biostatistics. The frequency of directions that paves a para self assessment with more statistical analysis. There is an approved standard deviations for self assessment on biostatistics. Best to read and too recommend.

JJBA never looked so good on my shelf

I'm happy to be an owner of the FULL series, finally! The fast-paced fights, interesting characters, and cultural impact of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure make this series--while older--one of the best manga ever made! The printing is quality, the cover is colorful, and the translation is top-notch.

The arc is nearly done.

Jotaro is the best! :D

The scan quality is amazing, worth the purchase. Will tie me over until the next season. Always great work from araki.

I pre-ordered this book, and wasnâ€™t disappointed. If youâ€™ve read this far, you know what jojo is about. There is only two main fights in this book, but they are important ones. One complaint is it is only 230 pages, the smallest in the jojonium series. And then, the book had a lot of visable smudges and finger prints on it. I would recommend this for any jojo fan.
