It's with great relief that I can give Natalie Keller Reinert's Ambition three stars and wish I could give it three and a half. I was worried for a while. For the fact is, this book starts on Chapter 13.I did need a lot of the information in the first 12 chapters: the source of Jules's maniacal drive for success, where she got the money for her farm, what her days were like. Obviously I needed a lot of the early information: the meeting with Peter and Jules's first disaster, and I needed to meet Mickey, of course. I didn't at all mind being taken back to some of the atmosphere of an outdoors working life in Central Florida, having ridden and taught riding in Tampa for 23 years. But by Chapter 13, I was skimming the text, muttering, "I know this already!" I was thinking, "When is something going to happen in this book?"Fortunately, it did. Peter showed back up, Jules went to a show, we found out a little of the challenge she faced in Mickey, and we saw just how ferociously she sabotaged herself. I got caught up in Jules's struggles, even though I kept wanting to give her a body shake and shout, "Girl, get a read on yourself!"Despite my impatience with her, I found Jules well-drawn, believable. I had a little more trouble with Peter, who comes across as flatter, more of the Good-Looking Guy Who Is Misunderstood requisite in romances than a flesh-and-blood person. I couldn't understand why he kept coming back to someone who treated him so brutally. He wasn't painted as a masochistic type. The writing is lively, capturing the train wrecks so often characteristic of a life with horses with humor and insight. I know whereof Reinert speaks when she takes us through a horse person's learning curves: For example, like Jules, I somehow internalized the idea that it was my job to place the horse's feet at exactly the right take-off spot. The day the trainer I'd found late in life (too late) said to me, "Your job is to set the tempo, pace, and frame; it's his job to jump the fence" was the beginning of one of the most unsettling psychological leaps I could imagine. As a confirmed control freak, letting the horse make his own decisions? Really? Reinert knows her stuff; all the horse-handling in this book rings true.I did raise an eyebrow once or twice. Two women taking full care of 13 horses, riding 9 a day? A trainer as far along as Jules not recognizing a bad shoeing job and a sore-footed horse? On the former point I'll have to cede to Reinert; she's been around a lot more than I have and maybe people can manage that schedule. The latter point I attribute to poetic license; it gives Peter a chance to show his stuff. But still. That said, the completion of Jules's character arc was fitting and worked well.Anybody who has been where Jules and I have both been, watching other people ride while we clean stalls, trying to negotiate personal relations when differing views of what ought to be done with a horse intervene, hanging on to a precarious dream without the basic wherewithal it requires, will have a lot of fun with this book. As will those who dream of being rescued by Peter—not a bad fate.

Absolutely fell in love with Jules. She's an amazing dedicated athlete, yet an outsider with a chip on her shoulder..she's such a relatable, believable heroine. I loved her work ethic and attitude, and her flaws. the secondary and horse characters in this novel are amazing, as is the dialogue. It has an HEA that also leaves you begging for more, and accurately shows the eventing world as one of the toughest and most demanding equine sports. Jules has to fight for everything she's gotten, and just doesn't know when to give up fighting and let things be good, but she's surrounded by people who care about her despite her imperfections. Really love this novel.

This is one of the most accurate horse books out there. The author so clearly knows horses and the eventing world, which is very refreshing. Even better, she can really write and creates interesting, well developed characters. She also is great at descriptions (the Ocala weather is almost its own character) and realistic dialogue.Jules is a complicated person and it was great fun to go along on the journey with her as she matures and grows into herself. While Jules falls into the category of riders without trust funds who break into the big time, it's believable (unlike some other riders in books), because she does have some money from a relative to buy her farm. This is thankfully not one of those annoying books where a rider with no money and no training finds an amazing horse in some unlikely scenario and goes on to win at a national competition. It's also nice that the ending didn't tie everything up in a perfect bow. I'd recommend this book for any reader of horse books who likes a realistic, well written story.

I am most familiar with Natalie's writing through her blogs and articles on horses and racing, so even though eventing is not my sport by any stretch I decided to take a stab at reading "Ambition" (in part because the cover caught my eye.) I ended up being sucked into the story enough I finished reading in two days! The good: Natalie knows horses and it shows without being obnoxious. You almost never have the feeling that something is being explained rather than the narrator's logical internal monologue. The characters are engaging (except see below) and the horses are probably the most realistically-drawn I've read in a long time. I even love the evil pony. Yes, I know "evil pony" is redundant. There's a definite art to writing a character who isn't generically likable or supposed to be likable BECAUSE they're bitchy and Jules is well done for the most part. She has legitimate reasons for her temperament, but we aren't supposed to applaud her as a 'strong female character' simply BECAUSE she's got a bad attitude. Her determination and love of horses is admirable and makes you want to root for her, and you understand her reasons for her 'go it alone' attitude. Up to a point. The bad: I took away one star for two reasons. Jules is a well-rounded character, and we're not supposed to be entirely supportive of her voluntary isolation (emotional and literal.) But the unrelenting nature of her attitude does start to grate after a while. She's so negative at times it becomes hard to sympathize, especially when she is in so deep over her head with a horse and will not ask for help, the hallmark of a good horsewoman. Also, Peter sticks out among the characters as being so perfect it's 1. hard to believe and 2. hard to understand why he's so extremely persistent (nicely!) in pursuing Jules when she's at best terse with him. The other reason is the rather abrupt ending. First, the build-up lead me to expect more to the accident than a minor fracture that's hardly worth mentioning. Second, as other reviewers have noted, the leap from the chapter-ending accident to "weeks later" in the last chapter is very abrupt. Of course, it's also a good sign, as I wasn't really ready for the book to be over!

Even a non Fort Wayne native can appreciate a book like this that is brilliantly written and Illustrated with great photography of before and after shots of Fort Wayne. This book is jammed with history yet remains exceptionally readable. I would highly recommend this book.

My family and I are from Fort Wayne and the surrounding area. My dad is really into history, especially Fort Wayne history. He absolutely loved this book. The side by side photos are spot on in terms of how, when, and where they are taken. The context of the pictures gives you just enough information to know what you are looking at. I wish that there were more photos of the city outside of the downtown area included in the format of this book. I know there wasn’t much going on. It would just be interesting to get an idea of what the lay of the land was before all the industrial/commercial areas, main roads, residential neighborhoods, etc. popped up. I highly recommend you check this out if you have any interest in Fort Wayne. One of the many great books that covers this city.

I wanted this book because I was born and raised there and there is a lot of things I miss about my hometown plus I can read about things that I didn’t know about it

I lived in Fort Wayne for 25 years and think it is a special place. The book serves as a reminder. I ordered two more to give as gifts!

Great book, brought back a few memories. Really enjoyed!

we loved the photo comparisons.

About the Author

Penny Kittle teaches freshman composition at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. She was a teacher and literacy coach in public schools for 34 years, 21 of those spent at Kennett High School in North Conway. She is the co-author of 180 Days with Kelly Gallagher, and is the author of Book Love, and Write Beside Them, which won the James Britton award. She is the president of the Book Love Foundation and was given the Exemplary Leader Award from NCTE's Conference on English Leadership. In the summer Penny teaches graduate students at the University of New Hampshire Literacy Institutes. Throughout the year, she travels across the U.S. and Canada (and once in awhile quite a bit farther) speaking to teachers about empowering students through independence in literacy. She believes in curiosity, engagement, and deep thinking in schools for both students and their teachers. Penny stands on the shoulders of her mentors, the Dons (Murray & Graves), and the Toms (Newkirk & Romano), in her belief that intentional teaching in a reading and writing workshop brings the greatest student investment and learning in a classroom. Write Beside Them is written with voice, humor, and humility. Penny Kittle does not tell us she has the perfect class with the perfect student. She tells us how to stick with what we believe to help our students achieve their fullest potential.I teach third grade (self-contained) and still gained so much insight into writing workshop with a constructivist approach by reading Penny's book. The dvd is phenomenal! It has her first day of class, her conferring with students, student work . . .I think writing teachers of grades 3 and up can gain from this book although it is geared to high school English teachers.Penny also refers to the work of other great writing teachers - Don Murray, Don Graves, Tom Romano, Tom Newkirk, Linda Reif, Nancy Atwell; it helps to have all these resources that readers can turn to for more information.

I actually bought this book because of another writing instruction book I read -- "Write Like This" by Kelly Gallagher, which was also awesome. I am only half way through this book and I am really inspired to shift my view as to my purpose as a writing teacher. Kittle reminded my why I love to write. Over the years, I have become so obsessed with teaching academia to my middle schoolers, that I seem to have lost place of why we even communicate in the first place.I understand that this book is directed at high school age kids (she mostly discusses her HS seniors), and I have junior high school kids, but everything she discusses is totally applicable to them.

Kittle is very moving in this text! Definitely tugs on English teacher heartstrings. Great ideas and strategies.

This was a required text for the Master's in Reading at Saint Joseph's University, and was by far the most useful to me as a high school teacher working with low level students. Ms. Kittle really understood the plight of the high school teacher in regards to how much reading readiness is focused on the lower grades. This is a text that should be used in all secondary education programs.

This is a step by step guide for how to approach writing in high school classrooms. It has very valuable information on how to make lessons about writing truly get to the students and how to help them achieve their best and become successful at this skill. Having the perspective of a teacher that works on these strategies on a daily basis makes this book a very relaible source of information. This is a great buy!

I had this book assigned for a college course I was taking last semester, I am studying to be a high school English teacher, and I cannot wait to go back and re-read it over the summer before I do my student teaching! Each chapter made me think about writing completely differently, and the provided DVD showed how Kittle actually runs her class and the students' reactions. I cannot begin to explain how much this book has helped me already, and I will continue to return to its wealth of knowledge as I try to help my future students with their writing!

This book has completely pumped me up for teaching writing next year! So many books are out there with great information, but I found Penny's to be the best fit for me. I think it is because she is a lot like me in her teaching style and beliefs. I LOVED that I was able to see her in action with her students and see how her first day of the workshop goes. So many of the great books on Writing Workshops out there are geared to the elementary school level and not to middle and high school and Penny has done an amazing job at showing how her Writing Workshop works in her classroom. This book will definitely be referenced many times over the coming years.Thank you Penny for such a great resource!

This book has a lot of great ideas for the writing classroom. I would recommend it to every teacher in the English Ed field.

Although Passover conjures up memories of family and grandma's cooking, sometimes it's better to add something new to the holiday menu. I am the kind of cook who likes to do that, to shake it up a bit, modernize and even lighten up the old fashioned meals. This book does exactly that. Without straying too far afield, it's an entire bookful of recipes that are perfect for the holiday table, all featuring fresh ingredients that appeal to our modern way of eating. From Whitney Fisch's Zucchini Fries with Horseradish Aioli to Liz Rueven's French Onion Soup with Cheesy Matzah Crackers to Sarah M. Lasry"s Veal Osso Buco to Amy Kritzer's Red Wine Ice Cream, these are foods I know my family would welcome -- not just on Passover but all year round. Why serve bottled soup when you can make Whitney Fisch's Cashew Cream Soup with Sun-dried Tomato Relish? And doesn't Liz Rueven's Pan Seared Tuna with Lime & Ginger sound a whole lot better than Jarred gefilte fish? The recipes are easy and include tips plus hints on preparing ahead. All the ingredients widely available. Congrats to you four who put this one together and just in time for the holiday!

Links to chapters and recipes don't work Having seen another comment re: the same from the spring Amazon should have remedied this problem by now.It is quite possible the content is good, perhaps excellent, but without a functioning Table of Contents or Index I'm not going to know; blindly plodding through an E Book is too labor and time intensive. If this issue is resolved I will gladly reconsider the above rating.

These ladies are truly awesome! They manage to compile some interesting and tasty dishes to make an otherwise boring culinary experience delightful, even to this Maven who is a vegetarian!I am actually looking forward to widening my Passover recipes this year.Ladies, well done!!

So many veggie ideas and dished I would make all year long. Such unique ideas: matzah ball chowder, gnocchi for Passover and charoset bites! Great photos and explanations.

This has some very good recipes to use everyday as well as for Passover. I made a few of the recipes for Passover and everyone loved what I made. I loved the twists on the old standby's.

I hate it when I buy a book that has no working index, you have a nerve to sell it as an e-book. I work and am very busy, to me this book is nothing but a waste of time.

I like the variety and originality of the recipes offered. There is something for everyone here. There are suggested Seder menus at the end as well. The booklet is divided into sections for appetizers, entrees, sides and desserts.

I am so excited about this book and can't wait to try out many of the dishes for Passover this year. I love that they tell you what can be made ahead of time and frozen, saving you lots of time. Excellent recipes!

Review

"I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in space exploration. Pyle's account of the evolution of the modern space program reminded me of events I'd forgotten, filled in details of events I thought I knew about, and revealed fascinating projects I'd never heard of. His ability to keep mind-boggling facts and fanciful yet true proposals in perspective makes this an engaging book that is gripping, yet easy to read. A wonderful addition to my reference library!" -Melanie Melton Knocke, director of CPS Planetarium, ambassador of the NASA Airborne Astronomy, and author"This book is essential reading for anybody with an interest in the history of spaceflight. It is a mine of information, much of it only recently declassified, on a wide range of projects. Some of the more expensive or more technologically challenging of these never made it beyond the imagination of their advocates, but their stories are no less fascinating. One of the most daring projects (chapter 3) was Wernher von Braun's 1952 blueprint for a fleet of spacecraft to visit Mars. Although visionary at the time, it is now clear that we had neither the detailed knowledge of Mars nor the financial resources needed to turn his ideas into reality. My personal favorite was chapter 11, which gave the inside story of the historic lunar landing on July 20, 1969, and of all the things that nearly went wrong-but fortunately didn't. All in all, a thoroughly good read."-David K. Love, Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and author of Kepler and the Universe"Whether you are a die-hard space fanatic or a casual reader, you'll find this book is full of fascinating space stories you never knew existed. Rod Pyle is our space supersleuth!" -Andrew Chaikin, author of A Man on the Moon"I'm a huge fan of amazing stories, and these stories are so compelling I could not put the book down until I finished reading every one. And what's most mind-boggling is that all these stories are true!"--Peter Z. Orton, story editor, Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories NBC series"So often our ongoing march into the future trumps remembering and savoring the past. Rod Pyle has made deep dives into space history, amassing well-crafted, storytelling chapters about people, projects, and dustbin endeavors, some recently declassified, that are germane to today's space initiatives. Be it detailing US Air Force attempts to salute the militarization of Earth orbit and the moon, novel atomic-powered starships, wheeled space stations, to faulty decision making that led to the deaths of human space travelers and robots, Pyle's ability to capture forget-me-not facts is truly amazing. This is a must-read for today's space fan, while looking at the rearview mirror of times past." --Leonard David, Space.com's Space Insider columnist

From the Author

There are nights in which I look at the moon and can scarcely believe what we achieved by going there in the 1960s. The voyages of Apollo were an astounding technological and human achievement. In "Amazing Stories of the Space Age," I have sought to not only recapture some of those incredible feats of the space age, but to also detail some of the plans that were never carried out, but were eminently doable given healthy doses of daring and funding. There were other projects that would likely have resulted in failure, as they were outlandish given what we know today. But many would have been glorious had they been undertaken-and successful. The space age was an era of boundless optimism, bold thinking and boundless innovation. It is my fondest hope that by revisiting this era we can capture some of that bold thinking and apply it to the adventures we are about to embark upon in the new space age we are entering today.

This book was reviewed in Smithsonian's Air And Space Magazine, with a very good review. I am glad that I purchased it. I would have given it another star if it had been longer. At 68 (and having followed the space program since I was 8 years old) I know a little bit about many of these stories. However, Mr. Pyle gives a great deal of additional details that make them fascinating. To many, it is absurd to consider that our military actually considered a rocket propelled by nuclear bombs. We're not talking about bombs exploding in deep space (this is still being considered in the future.) As Mr. Pyle notes, this is from liftoff on earth. No one stopped to consider the radiation hazards of such a rocket. Once they did, the program was shelved. There are other examples of ideas that are amazing, some which actually worked - at least in some form, and often years later. If you are interested in the Space Age, this book is truly fascinating.

"...Nazis in Orbit..." provides an "inside baseball" view of mainstream missions readers have heard of and missions and space hardware which are more obscure. An informitive and entertaining read.

Very interesting recount of the development of rockets starting before Von Braun. I recall the rivalry of the services and NASA to get launch and orbiting hardware designed and online...was unaware of some programs like Blue Gemini. Great read..

A fun and informative book. A few of the stories aren't so "amazing" but it's still an interesting read.

Bought this as a gift for my husband, who loves anything to do with space. It came quickly and he likes it.

This is a collection of short stories about the space age. Some of them were quite entertaining.

A great look back at some of the crazy, and not so crazy, stuff people thought of in the early days of space exploration... A very fun read!

Great book very informative. Could not put it down.

Timeline, by Michael Crichton

Amazon.com Review

When you step into a time machine, fax yourself through a "quantum foam wormhole," and step out in feudal France circa 1357, be very, very afraid. If you aren't strapped back in precisely 37 hours after your visit begins, you'll miss the quantum bus back to 1999 and be stranded in a civil war, caught between crafty abbots, mad lords, and peasant bandits all eager to cut your throat. You'll also have to dodge catapults that hurl sizzling pitch over castle battlements. On the social front, you should avoid provoking "the butcher of Crecy" or Sir Oliver may lop your head off with a swoosh of his broadsword or cage and immerse you in "Milady's Bath," a brackish dungeon pit into which live rats are tossed now and then for prisoners to eat. This is the plight of the heroes of Timeline, Michael Crichton's thriller. They're historians in 1999 employed by a tech billionaire-genius with more than a few of Bill Gates's most unlovable quirks. Like the entrepreneur in Crichton's Jurassic Park, Doniger plans a theme park featuring artifacts from a lost world revived via cutting-edge science. When the project's chief historian sends a distress call to 1999 from 1357, the boss man doesn't tell the younger historians the risks they'll face trying to save him. At first, the interplay between eras is clever, but Timeline swiftly becomes a swashbuckling old-fashioned adventure, with just a dash of science and time paradox in the mix. Most of the cool facts are about the Middle Ages, and Crichton marvelously brings the past to life without ever letting the pulse-pounding action slow down. At one point, a time-tripper tries to enter the Chapel of Green Death. Unfortunately, its custodian, a crazed giant with terrible teeth and a bad case of lice, soon has her head on a block. "She saw a shadow move across the grass as he raised his ax into the air." I dare you not to turn the page! Through the narrative can be glimpsed the glowing bones of the movie that may be made from Timeline and the cutting-edge computer game that should hit the market in 2000. Expect many clashing swords and chase scenes through secret castle passages. But the book stands alone, tall and scary as a knight in armor shining with blood. --Tim Appelo

From Publishers Weekly

"And the Oscar for Best Special Effects goes to: Timeline!" Figure maybe three years before those words are spoken, for Crichton's new novelAdespite media reports about trouble in selling film rights, which finally went to ParamountAis as cinematic as they come, a shiny science-fantasy adventure powered by a superior high concept: a group of young scientists travel back from our time to medieval southern France to rescue their mentor, who's trapped there. The novel, in fact, may improve as a movie; its complex action, as the scientists are swept into the intrigue of the Hundred Years War, can be confusing on the page (though a supplied map, one of several graphics, helps), and most of its characters wear hats (or armor) of pure white or black. Crichton remains a master of narrative drive and cleverness. From the startling opening, where an old man with garbled speech and body parts materializes in the Arizona desert, through the revelation that a venal industrialist has developed a risky method of time-travel (based on movement between parallel universes; as in Crichton's other work, good, hard science abounds), there's not a dull moment. When elderly Yale history prof Edward Johnston travels back to his beloved 15th century and gets stuck, and his assistants follow to the rescue, excitement runs high, and higher still as Crichton invests his story with terrific period detail and as castles, sword-play, jousts, sudden death and enough bold knights-in-armor and seductive ladies-in-waiting to fill any toystore's action-figure shelves appear. There's strong suspense, too, as Crichton cuts between past and present, where the time-travel machinery has broken: Will the heroes survive and make it back? The novel has a calculated feel but, even so, it engages as no Crichton tale has done since Jurassic Park, as it brings the past back to vigorous, entertaining life. This is an interesting twist on time travel. I had read it years before in paperback. However, I was disappointed with the Kindle version. The story has been edited and abridged! I am aware of at least 3 (pretty important) scenes which are in the original but that do not appear in the Kindle version. Is the author's estate aware you made these changes??

For twenty years or more, Crichton was king of the sci-fi thriller genre. His creative genius is splashed across many books that I would easily rate 5-stars. This is just not one of them. I loved the detail he put into the setup and operation of the system that allows the characters to travel in time. But one of the problems with any time travel book is that you have to decide where to focus the bulk of the story - on the aspects of time travel, or on the adventures at the destination time period? Crichton chose the latter, which led to a book about 14th century France. If you like that time period, you'll probably enjoy the book. It's well written, but I was hoping for more science fiction and less historical drama.

I had such high hopes for the movie when it came out. But, of course, they ruined it. Not like other books you read that are great novels and would be very difficult to capture the feeling you get reading it. The great movie is right there written in the book. They just need to try reading it. Anyway, the grittyness of the dark ages is so real in this that you wonder how anyone survived back then. Definitely not like an Errol Flynn movie. Nobody spoke English, the knights are built like body builders, and if you’re caught in the woods, you’re assumed to be a bandit and immediately killed. Dang. It’s good.

I enjoyed this book so well that I give it AS MANY as 4 stars. However, there were several things that frustrated me, thus, ONLY 4 stars.I am not especially scientifically minded, so the explanation of how the quantum physics worked was lost on me. Just had to 'believe' that it worked.Mostly (ie. transcription errors).Although the personalities of the characters were described well, we don't get to know them well enough to believe in them. For example: In the present, Marek is well versed in jousting and swordplay. However, it seems unbelievable to think that he would be better than the knights that actually lived doing these things - they needed to in order to save their lives. In the present, Kate is a mountain climber - a good one. However, it's a bit of a stretch to believe that she could climb around the outside of the castle wall or jump 5 feet to the next rafter of a ceiling and not fall. Chris is pretty believable. The action was smooth and could be followed easily. However, when the trio got into desperate circumstances, there were too many times that they were saved JUST in time. ... I liked that though Marek lived in a different universe, it was so closely like the universe that he came from that his 'death stone' gave a satisfying ending to his life.

*****SPOILERS*****Early on the characters start out going into painful details about quantum mechanics that, even as a serious Sci-Fi fan, I found tedious and booing. Then they make a SERIOUS, and rather stand-out point that time travel is impossible and they are actually traveling into alternate universes... OK!! I can get with that! The fact that alternate universes would exist in different time periods (they travel to an alternate universe which exists in the 1300s.) seemed very strange, but I was willing to go with it. I mean it IS fiction, I'll go with your unique twist on how alternate universes exist. But when a person who traveled to an alternate universe was able to leave a "Help Me" note in a pile of old parchments in the 1300s which is found in THIS universe, it took a turn that made NO Sense at ALL.After that, the book just goes on and on and on in the 1300s and nothing actually happens.. it's a game of tag. Run. Hide. Get Captured. Escape. Run. Hide. Get Captured. Escape. Get into a fight. Run. Hide. Get Captured. Escape. Just trying to waste time in the book (about 50% of it) until the machine automatically returns home.I powered through the last 3/4 of the book just waiting to get to what I expected was a Twist ending discovering that the scientists misinterpreted the "Alternate Universe" theory and they WERE actually traveling back in time.... but no. The characters returned home from the alternate universe only to check out the grave of one of their party members who stayed behind... which, AGAIN, WOULDN'T EXIST IN THIS UNIVERSE.Characters: Not interestingStory: Not interestingSci-fi: Nonsensical.

I first read this book a few weeks ago while doing laundry at my apartment complex. It was a book very hard to put down once you start. I know I couldn't. It got me hooked. Also, I had gotten to know the author through Jurassic Park, the book, and countless others, I knew his work would be an ideal choice! No disappointment there! I have to say, having read the book, I found that it is way better than the movie. But then again, there were so much information in the book that it would be hard to put them all in a movie.

It’s great that so many people love this book, but I disagree totally. It’s interminable and written poorly. My first Crichton, so I don’t know his style, and obviously it clicks with millions of people. For me, it never seemed to end, I didn’t care about the characters, and there are times when research for the 14th Century scenes seems to have come straight out of Shrek. The premise is fantastic, but the execution clunky and simplistic, I felt. Very disappointed.
