If you're looking for a text to substitute for a Pre-Law English course, this might be its best application. If you're a professor or English instructor looking for a great text to teach Pre-Law English, it's worth a look. It could also be good for someone already in the law field who has been writing "Legalese" and needs to learn a better way. This book can teach how to distill the core of a matter and how to change unclear thought into something coherent and succinct.Amazon's rating system is, unfortunately, about how well I liked it, not how useful it might be to others. To be fair (which is why I gave it a 3 instead of a 2), I have an MA in English Rhetoric and have spent my life in the writing/publishing world, so it does not fit my needs. I'm new to the field of law and hoped it would teach me the required elements of various briefs/documents. Out of a 240 page book, about 50 pages is devoted to what I sought (Appendix B - Four Model Documents on drafting an Appellate Brief, Motion, Contract, and a Research Memo). Appendix A is "How to Punctuate" which, ostensibly, if you're over 30, you learned in school somewhere along the line.The remainder of a book is simply an advanced writing course with examples drawn from legal documents. A typical example would be that you are given a convoluted sentence which you then have to break into smaller, more succinct and understandable sentences. The advanced form of that same exercise is a convoluted paragraph in which you have to figure out what is being said and rewrite it to make it more clear and coherent. Other exercises involve interviewing lawyers and judges to find out their preferences in what they like to read as far as legal documents are concerned. The book also assumes you have access to a law library and lots of time to research. One example is: "Find a judicial opinion that takes several paragraphs before getting to the point."Be more diligent than I was -- take a look at the Table of Contents from the "Look Inside" link, and even download a sample of it to your Kindle before purchasing. Apparently I simply looked at the reviews.

If you've read Garner's stuff, you'll notice some overlap. This book restated "The Winning Brief" multiple times, and it has most of the same examples (Demand Letters, Memos, etc.) as "The Redbook 2d" (I don't have the 3d of that one).That's the disclaimer. But I still loved the book. It's largely written as a how-to, gives you tips to improve your legal writing, and is a resource that I'll continue to reference throughout my career.If you'd like a quick read (with accompanying exercises to test your skill) this is a great book to have. Then, when you become more interested, you can nab the Redbook, Legal Usage dictionaries, etc. In sum, it's a great place to start.One objection, though: Garner's answers in the back often deal with only the Easy exercise, not all three (Easy, Intermediate, Hard). I realize that giving answers to all three would lengthen the book, but the easy one is exactly that--easy. I'd like to see his Heller brief, or any of the harder ones just to compare. But that's only a minor annoyance. Otherwise, it's a real asset if you're interested in improving your legal writing. And you should be.

This is must read for lawyers and law students. Write the deep issue and your arguments will follow. Read the book to find out how and why.

This book was purchased for a tax research class. It absolutely delivers on its title, more than I even could have imagined. I was immediately impressed by the author's matter-of-fact yet engaging style, and the content is quite useful for non-legal professionals too. If you ever write persuasive letters, articles or blog posts, there are many practical tips in this book. It is an entertaining and thought provoking read. After most sections, I was left scratching my head with a puzzled look on my face. Not questioning the author's ideas, I was instead left wondering why they were not more mainstream, legal and otherwise. I really hope many more people, even those who only occasionally write, read this book!

I'm not a lawyer; I'm a mathematician. I know I'm not a great writer, but I'm working hard to become a better writer. "Legal Writing in Plain English" is filled with clear, practical advice. Garner's advice is easier to apply than Flesch's Art of Plain Talk, the first book that I read on plain English. I like that Garner focuses on the worst offenders; for example, suggesting we change "-ion" words rather than declaring a war on all affixes and asking us to check every "of" for rephrasing rather than every preposition. This is important when, like me, you only have three to four productive hours a day and you just don't have the time to worry about every preposition and affix.I strongly recommend both "Legal Writing in Plain English" and Garner's Modern American Usage.

Great value on this book I need for my legal research and writing class! Easy to follow and read although in smaller print.

I can't say I'm very impressed with this books but it works for me. I'm not a professional lawyer whatsoever but it helps to hammer it home when I need a reference regarding the law.

So far so good. We'll see if it helps my legal writing.

LOVE this book. I was recently re-introduced to hiking (hiked when I was at summer camp many years ago) and I'm addicted. I even "forced" my family from the city to go hiking and they're just as committed to it as well. This book is very well detailed, and it gives you great information about the location of the trail, difficulty, markers, and views. If you want a good book for the lower NYS area for hiking, then I definitely recommend this.

Well put together guide to hiking the Catskills and Hudson Valley. Includes directions and detailed descriptions. May be the only guide you need...

Good book with a lot of hiking options for different levels of hiking experience. But just know that the book doesn't list all the route options for each hike (obviously, or else the book would be a LOT longer than it is) but if a hike interests you but you think it might be too tough for you, search it online for other trail routes. For instance, they have Breakneck Ridge to South Mt. Beacon all in one hike and it is 9 miles. I'm not used to longer distances, so I didn't even give this hike a second look at first until I realize I can do them in two separate hikes. I did a shorter roughly 3mile hike at Breakneck, and another day did Mt Beacon to the fire tower which was about 4.4 miles.Seems like common sense now that I'm saying it, but as soon as I saw the mileage on some of them I flipped to the next page without even reading about it.

About the Author

Being a finance guy who has worked in different areas across the industry, from investment banking to venture capital to private equity to commercial banking, I felt very meh about this play. Maybe I've worked with too many scumbags and seen too many colleagues get indicted and sued to find this that interesting.Don't get me wrong: this play is very well written, the characters are well designed (and written pretty realistically), but the events and the conversations were nothing special. The author seems to have gone above and beyond to get the lingo and terminology right, and the various personalities in the industry and their constant conversations about what they'll do when the whole thing crashes were like flashbacks for me. But the big ending was just funny to me in that it did not give me the shock that was intended; I think I was more shocked that others were shocked. Because I know y'all read the news. Ironically, I expected something far worse and darker than what occurs in the third act.I was the wrong audience for this play. I imagine it's like telling a story about a schoolyard fight to a prison security guard who regularly sees way worse. Love it. I saw the play a couple years back in NYC with an All-Star cast and couldnâ€™t get it out of my head. So glad I could finally get the play so as to RE-read and enjoy it whenever I like. The author did her homework and created really true to type characters.

I gave up on this after reading about a fifth of it.First of all, the writing needs some work; it feels clunky, and the constant foreign words and translations distract from the flow of the story, rather than adding to it.Secondly, it feels like there's very little emotion in any of the characters. They don't react to events in relatable ways, so I just couldn't bring myself to care about them. Cheating wife? Oh well. Massive life changing revelation? Oh, the protagonist says, my father can now find me "someone more worthy of me" to marry. Ugh.However, what really made me give up was the two teenage girl protagonists. They talk and think about boys and marriage, and not much else. (To be fair, they also occasionally think about escaping their current life... and the new boys they'll meet.) When their mother reveals some life-changing news to them, their thoughts are about how this changes the kind of boys they can get.Ugh. No. There's more to life. I give up.

Buckle up for a fable that delightfully straddles the line between fantasy and history! A compelling tale about two sisters, Liba and Laya, living in a world of untamed wilderness, dangerous pogroms, and a surreal magic they do not yet understand. I particularly enjoyed Libaâ€™s character and her style, especially when she learns to embrace who she truly is as the narrative progresses through the trials and mysteries that surround her. Although there are numerous magical elements in this story, a lot of real, and oft times dark history provides the backdrop to this plot about two sisters gradually coming of age. If you enjoy fantastic elements sprinkled in with realistic drama, then The Sisters of the Winter Wood is for you!

I devoured The Sisters of the Winter Wind in two days. I loved the way that Rena Rossner was able to weave together a compelling story and characters with so much history and mythology. Although chapters alternated between Liba and Laya, I felt Liba much more at the center of the story, maybe because I identified more with her practical nature. Although I had read a little bit about the book before I read it, Rossner frequently took the story in directions I didn't anticipate. Her descriptions, especially of the fruit, were fantastic and enticing. Although there was a lot of sadness in the story, there was hopefulness too. I recommend reading the author's note at the end of the book, because it shares a lot of history from that area, but wait until you have finished the story. This was one of my favorite books of the year so far, and I hope that it won't be too long before Rossner releases another novel.

I couldn't put it down! It reads more like a young adult novel, but a very good one. I recommend reading the author's note at the back of the book first to establish the history.Is it a perfect book? No. So why am I giving it five stars? Because it provides a great escape and a totally original story with original, flawed characters and a unique look at historical events I knew nothing about.I notice another reader's comment about confusion with all of the Hebrew words, but there's a glossary in the back that I used for review and I feel the Jewish traditions added depth and richness to the sisters' story. The book feels more like Liba's story, not so much shared equally between the two sisters. Perhaps that's because Liba is older and feels responsible for her younger sister. I loved the magical elements and also the way the writer used real historical places and events to increase the tension.The author is very good at creating mental pictures with words.

Laya is light, airy, and bright, so much different than her sister, and a swan. With their parents gone, the girls quickly start forging their own paths, wildly divergent from what their parents would have wanted from them and dangerously apart from what their mother warned them about. Now, though, there are more strangers in the village - large men who frighten Liba and singing, luring fruit-sellers who Laya feels she belongs with. The sisters struggle to stay close and connected while each becoming her own person in the world.I adore this book. The beginning was a little bumpy because when the mother is explaining who they are to the sisters, it felt like the author was not confident in her own voice. However that quickly passed, and I was engulfed in the story. An intense family saga full of beautiful scenery, dangerous characters, history, mystery, and fabulism.The character building was flawless: you came to know Liba and Laya through alternating chapters/voices. There were secrets and challenges and loyalties and tragedies.Although for the most part the central focus is the sisters and their own personal trials and tribulations, the whisper of the world around them is evident. The transformation of their town from one where people of different cultures and religions live peacefully side-by-side to one where neighbors are suddenly talking out loud about each other in negative perspectives is heartbreaking.According to her Goodreads profile, the author's great-grandparents all immigrated to America to escape the war-time violence overseas, and this is her labor of love for them and the history and folklore surrounding her ancestors.

This book is great! It works perfect for my needs. Working 9-5 and only having weekends off kinda can make planning a BP trip a pain. And it's not like I can afford to take time off every time I want to go outdoors. That's where this book steps in beautifully. Very well organized and the descriptions are spot on and very accurate. He gives you the in on where the good camp sites and springs are. Some of the campsites he describes are very hidden and you would never be able to find on your own. He gives you a topo map of each trail with marked campsites and springs. Driving directions are accurate and all of the trips I have taken so far were extremely beautiful and doable in a night.Everything is spot on. I give this book 5 stars!!! Can't go without it.

This is a really good guide book. It's got a lot of great overnight (or longer) trips in it. I like the scales it uses for scenery, difficulty and the all important solitude. It's got good, short descriptions of the hike and what you'll find along the way, as well as directions to get there. I'd love to give this book 5 stars, but I can't.The problem with the book, and why it only gets 3, is that it lacks important info that's easily available, and would make using it so easy that it's ridiculous not to have it. All the trails it mentions are numbered by the forest service. You can use these numbers online or when talking to a ranger to find out more information, exact information, and to help plan your trip when you're doing research that's not this book. But you know what? This book makes no use of these trail numbers. Instead, you get, Go here, turn left at the junction, keep going straight... which does work to get you there, but does not work to help you research beforehand, or use the trail markers and signs along the way, or talk with other hikers on the trails to get immediate information.Pretty insane not to have that info.

Maps are terrible, in fact, the worst I've seen in any book on hiking. Also, although centered around Portland, OR, several worthwhile trails in or near the Columbia river gorge have been excluded while trails in the state of Washington at some 175 miles from Portland have been included. Although photographs will not help you navigate, it would have been nice to see sharp color photos. As it is, the pictures seem to be archive material from the 1930's.Although some vital information is missing, I find the description of hikes useful.

I'm not a city person, and I missed being able to quickly get our in the wilderness when I moved to Portland. I love that this book also rates how crowded trails are. I'll take a less spectacular hike for some seclusion.

Decent reference book for planning local overnight trips within a reasonably short drive of the Portland Metro area.

Excellent collection of quick hikes near Portland. There are plenty of loops included, which are what I really look for in overnight trips. Great information on logistics of getting to trailheads, water sources, etc. Definitely one of the irreplaceable Portland backpacking print resources.

I have never been hiking and really want to try it. This book was recomended and it is full of hikes that look to be perfect. So thankful some o,e put this together.
