From the Inside Flap
Paul Blaisdell was the man behind the monsters in such movies as The She Creature, Invasion of the Saucer Men, Not of This Earth, It! Terror from Beyond Space and many others. Working in primarily low-budget films, Blaisdell was forced to rely on greasepaint, guts and, most importantly, an unbounded imagination for his creations. From his inauspicious beginning through The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow (1959), the construction of Blaisdell's monsters and the making of the movies in which they appeared are fully detailed here. Blaisdell's work in the early monster magazines of the 1960s is also covered.

I highly recommend this book it is very well written and it is nice to see Paul getting credit for his genius. The book covers all the films he worked on in his all too short career delving into his creations and some of the people he worked with. It goes into a decent amount of detail for each film and has a pretty good number of photos from each showcasing the props and or costumes he created for them. It also goes into some detail on how he created them and the materials he used so I recommend it even more strongly for anyone thinking about going into effects work. I have always thought it was shameful the man was so under appreciated during his lifetime as the creations he manged to make with next to no budget are awe inspiring. It is also shameful he ever got to work on a movie with the production values and budget worthy of his talent. This book at least documents his work and by reading it one may glean whispers of what may have been.
B Movie makeup and special effects artist Paul Blaisdell is nicely remembered here for his work on movies like Invasion of the Saucer Men, It! The Terror from Beyond Space, and others. Abandoned by American International when they changed gears in the 1960's for color, gothic-style movies like the Edgar Alan Poe films, Blaisdell left behind him a string of creature effects, generally better than revealed by (to be generous) mediocre directors and Speedy Gonzalez shooting schedules. This book wonderfully blends Blaisdell's own history, low-budget movie-making lore at AIP, detailed descrptions of how Blaisdell assembled his work, and an overall look at micro-budget industry trends. I could see this filmed as a movie in the style of Tim Burton's "Ed Wood," although I disagree with the emphasis on Cuddles, the star of She Creature as the highlight in favor of the later big-domed aliens of Invasion of the Saucer Men with their alcohol-shooting needles protruding from their fingers at will. One of his last big jobs was It! The Terror from Beyond Space, featuring a bizarre-looking mask. It's almost disappointing that everyone makes a big deal of stuntman Ray Corrigan's chin sticking out the mouth. It actually added some additional weirdness that might've better benefitted by silence on that score. Great tribute to Blaisdell.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in the beloved monsters created by Blaisdell. The only slight ding I can give it is that it would have been nice to have a few more pictures. However, Palmer is a talented writer and the text is a joy to read. He has gathered information from numerous sources, including information from his personal communications. He also details the contributions of Blaisdell's wife Jackie, and devoted friend Bob Burns, to many of Paul's monsters, props, and effects--information I have not seen so well documented before. What Blaisdell was able to accomplish with very limited resources is amazing, and the "backstory" he often invested in his creations, is something that has ensured their immortality. Palmer also details the sad way in which the movie industry turned its back on Blaisdell, and how he nearly died completely forgotten. A maturing and increasingly sophisticated SciFi and Horror fan-base, who were too quick to ridicule the low-budget films they enjoyed when younger, also contributed to Blaisdell's fade from the scene. I'm glad that now, many people acknowledge this monster-makers unique and iconographic creations. .
I'm a child of the 1950's and fed on Paul's work without really knowing it. I loved "The She Creature" and yes even "The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow". As a 12 year old I admit to getting tears in my eyes when the color ending to "How to Make a Monster" showed the creature from "It Conquered the World" burning up. This is a great tribute to an innovator and genius that American International Pictures apparently never truly appreciated. Having just finished this excellent biography that has again filled me with beautiful memories from my childhood. This 67 year old boy is going to put his DVD copy of "The Day the World Ended" on.
Excellent movie buffs book for 50's el-cheapo horror/sci fi Drive-in Movie fans.Paul Blaisdell's wonderful story of his movie monster creations for Nicholson/Arkoff's AIP Pictures and Roger Cormans movies.Amazing what Blaisdell accomplished with a few garbage bags, candle wax, spirit gum and paint.Bob Burns' contributions are all detailed and thanks to Bob we have some great photographs. You love these movies? Buy this book!!!.
Great book about an unheralded and underappreciated talent!
Wonderful bio/tribute to one of the most underrated and under appreciated monster makers of yesteryear. Making nightmares from nothing. Long live Blaisdell and his creations.
