The Longest Way Home: One Man's Quest for the Courage to Settle Down, by Andrew McCarthy

Review

“Soulful and searching . . . McCarthy’s prose shines with intelligence and intimacy . . . A long, strange trip on the direction of full-throttle love.” (Cheryl Strayed New York Times Book Review)“A candid, touching, and often humorous new memoir.” (The San Francisco Chronicle) "Combining the best aspects of Paul Theroux’s misanthropy in books like Old Patagonian Express and Elizabeth Gilbert’s emotions in Eat, Pray, Love, this book is hard to put down.  Bound to be popular, this compelling and honest chronicle will not disappoint readers." (Library Journal) “Andrew McCarthy treks from Baltimore to the Amazon, exploring his commitment issues as fearlessly as he scales Mount Kilimanjaro." (Elle)"Brave and moving...McCarthy’s keen sense of scene and storytelling ignites his accounts...[t]hreaded with an exemplary vulnerability and propelled by a candid exploration of his own life’s frailties." (National Geographic)"McCarthy ponders some of the biggest and most frightening questions surrounding intimacy: How does a loner connect? How does a traveler settle down? How do we merge into families without losing ourselves? The answer seems to be that all these things are impossible...and yet somehow we do it anyway. There is much to be learned, and much to be admired, in this elegant, thoughtful story."—Elizabeth Gilbert, bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love "This is not some memoir written by an actor who fancies himself a world traveler. McCarthy really is a world traveler – and a damned fine writer, too…To readers who think, “Andrew McCarthy? Really?” the answer is a resounding and emphatic yes. Really." (Booklist)"Rarely have I seen the male psyche explored with such honesty and vulnerability. This is the story of a son, a father, a brother, a husband, a man who finds the courage not only to face himself, but to reveal himself, and, in so doing, illuminates something about what it is to be human, fully alive, and awake.” --Dani Shapiro, Author of Devotion"It's hard to write books that are both adventurous and touching, but Andrew McCarthy manages to pull it off and more! A smart, valuable book." --Gary Shteyngart, bestselling author of Super Sad True Love Story and Absurdistan"Where lesser writers might reach for hyperbole and Roget to describe such exotic lands as Patagonia, Kilimanjaro and Baltimore, in The Longest Way Home, McCarthy leans on subtlety, a straightforward style and hard-won insights to allow his larger stories to unfold. It’s not hard to imagine him as the solitary figure in the café, scribbling in a notebook by candlelight, making the lonely, tedious work of travel writing look romantic and easy."--Chuck Thompson, author of Better Off Without 'Em and Smile When You're Lying

I bought this book for two reasons, one very realistic, the other very shallow. I'll start with the shallow: I wanted to marry Andrew McCarthy when I was 15 years old. Okay, I got that part over with. The real reason I bought this book is because I discovered a while back that Andrew McCarthy is a travel writer (and Editor at Large) for National Geographic. As someone who dreams of being a world traveler, discovering all of the beauties of the world and learning all the cultures, being a citizen of the world (as Andrew says), I read his travel pieces to hear his take on some of the places I wish to explore someday. What I found is that Andrew is an exceptional storyteller. He describes the places he's been and things he sees with such colorful details. As I read some of his articles, I could almost picture myself there, seeing the things that he was describing. When I learned that he had a book coming out, I immediately ordered my copy so that I could read more of his explorations. You learn immediately from the cover of the book that the focus is not of his travels, but rather what he learns from his travels and the discoveries (both self and cultural) he makes to lead him to the point of marrying his longtime girlfriend. As I read the book, I found some of the same descriptive storytelling from his other travel stories, but I also found that Andrew is not the guy you expect him to be from his acting. He's a guy that prefers to be alone in his explorations and thoughts. I won't give the book away, but I will say that I originally only gave it three stars. And that's because I read it after having read some reviews here at Amazon.com. What I took from those was a tone that I used to read the book because many had said that he whined and really just needed to grow up. While I didn't get that from the book, I did assert a tone that really should not have been there. That said, I still really enjoyed Andrew's story and reading the book. The following weekend, I went to Atlanta with a friend who is both an avid reader and a world traveler. We attended a book festival event where Andrew was interviewed about his book. We found him to be the intelligent and witty guy that we expected him to be all along. While he may enjoy traveling alone, he is very good at charming a crowd. After hearing him discuss his book in person and talk about some of the specific situations that he had written about, I quickly learned that many of the places where I had asserted a bit of sarcastic tone really deserved a humorous tone. After that, I decided that my rating deserved at least four stars, not the original three that I gave it. I really enjoy Andrew's travel articles, I enjoyed his book, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to hear him speak about his book in person. All of that together made The Longest Way Home a very enjoyable experience as a whole. And, yes, the guy from Pretty In Pink can write. More importantly, he can tell a story.

Love this on lots of levels. Andrew McCarthy is someone I've been drawn to through his Hallmark movie characters. I can't say I paid that much attention to many of his movie before; I'm not a big movie or TV watcher. His characters on Hallmark drew me in and I wanted to find out more about this actor (and let's face it - he's cute.) When I found he turned to travel writing as a way to find himself I was more intrigued. It's always interesting to read how others process their journeys and travel writing is such a fun, spot on metaphor for exactly what he was and is going through on this journey of self discovery. His stories are rich in beauty, depth, truth, and most of all growth. McCarthy is willing to be open and vulnerable, His story isn't a cocky self-portrait, but one of humility, sharing, and encouragement for fellow travelers. It is his story. He is a private person in a very "under the microscope" occupation perhaps that paradox enabled him to expose his very personal side. As a follower traveler on this journey of life, I love to sit in on the "want to see the slides of our summer vacation" moments. I love peeking in to see how others cope, push ahead, and continue to love in good times and in not so good times. I bought the audio version of McCarthy's story. He narrates it, so it is even more personal. It's like he's sitting right there telling me the stories in person. Enjoy!

This book struck really close to home for me. I am not sure how many other's who read it can say that, but for me it bore an uncanny similarity to my life with my husband. I felt as if I found my husband's journal. Irish heritage, father issues, the traveling to try to 'find' something but not even knowing what they are looking for, one foot in/one foot out of relationships. As with Eat, Pray, Love and WILD, I admire the courage it takes for these authors to share their hopes, fears, dreams and realities with the public. So many reviewers are so judgemental on their personal choices. I don't think you have to agree with the author in order to take something good away from it. In Andrew's case, I will be honest and say I do not think his marriage holds much promise. Hope I am wrong. I would love to read more about his life since the marriage. ** I bought the Kindle version and was delighted to find the pictures at the end. It was only by sure luck that I continued to page 'forward' after the end of the book. What a pleasant surprise! **

Pete the Cat: Play Ball! (My First I Can Read), by James Dean

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2- In Big Lunch, Pete decides to make a sandwich. Of course, the more he adds, the bigger it becomes. This is a good thing because he is really, really hungry. He forgets to remove the wrappers and adds cans, jars, and boxes to the ever-teetering tower of items. As he piles on the food, children's giggles will grow right along with the expanding "sandwich." Once it becomes too big for the small cat to consume, he must think of a clever solution to his dilemma, which he does with a little help from his friends. In Play Ball!, Pete is baseball ready and his team, the Rocks, are facing the Rolls in a big game. The players warm up and, when the game is over, both sides greet one another with high fives. Even though Pete does not play his best game, he has a good attitude about making mistakes and not being sad about errors he made. This is a great title to spark a discussion about sportsmanship. In both books, simple cartoon art in bold colors and large text make the books a treat for beginning readers.-Janene Corbin, Rosebank Elementary School, Nashville, TNα(c) Copyright 2013. The Pete-the-Cat books are our favorites in the "My First Level, I Can Read!" series. Pete may not be as well known as Little Critter, Biscuit, Fancy Nancy, or the Berenstain Bears, but his groovy cool factor moves him to the top of our list.Unlike some of the "I Can Read" books, the Pete books usually have a complete story, with a clear beginning, a couple of developments in the middle, and then a satisfying ending. I like that even in very early readers. What happens makes sense and the endings are sensible, and groovy. Each fully illustrated page has two sentences, running from four to seven words each. That's a nice length and a good and fair challenge for a little starting reader. The drawings fully support the text, and while they look a bit amateurish at first the characters are actually expressive and presented effectively. The "message" if you want to call it that, of this book is that you just have to try your best, and whether you get a hit or strike out, whether you drop the fly ball or catch it, the important point is to do your very best. Pete always gives it his all and that what makes him such an interesting hero for such an early reading level series. So, this is one of the few early readers books that strikes me as "set worthy" and we've been happy to collect them all over time. The paperback versions are particularly good value.

For those of you who are Pete the Cat fans, and baseball fans alike, this book is fantastic. It focuses on the aspect of perseverance through trying, failing and finally succeeding: something that all kids should understand and sadly don't (no, you are not the best at everything you do immediately but rather through practice). My kids loved it and yours will, too.

LOVED this book! My 5 year old is OBSESSED with baseball. Last year, at the age of 4, he was bumped up to play youth baseball (coach pitch 5 & 6 yr olds). I was amazed about the poor sportsmanship by many of the players (especially the talk coming from their mouths). This book nails sportsmanship, LOVE IT! My husband and I plan to coach next year and I plan to buy every player this book. The #1 rule in any sport should always be respect, sportsmanship, and playing as a team. P.S my boys (ages 3 & 5) liked this book too. It is easy to read and understand.

Pete the Cat books are always a hit with my kids. (boys ages 3 and 5) The stories are clear and concise, the font is large and there aren't too many words on each page. Pete the Cat books are perfect for kids in pre-K or Kindergarten that are just learning to read. Most of the Pete the Cat books end up with some kind of "lesson" about sharing or trying your hardest even if you don't win and can seem kind of cheesy to me but my kids still enjoy them. The illustrations are super cute and make the book very engaging for those who cannot read and are just being read to.

This book series is one of my son’s favorites. He is a toddler and can’t read yet, but the simple storylines and colorful drawings keep him entertained and he loves retelling the story as he remembers it. I can see this also coming in handy in a few years when he is reading.

Perfect for my 4-year old who has just started reading. The repetitive characters are great and she really likes them. The books are relatively short and the pages are one or two lines. Perfect for new readers with easy words and relatively few difficult words.

I bought this book for my ( now) 7 yr old grand son who loves Pete The Cat books and w/ this 1, he was so happy because he loves anything to do w/ sports!

My son is a big fan of Pete the Cat we even got him at Pete the Cat stuffed animal. Big that was a big hit I love Early Reader books, and when I discovered this book and Pete's Big Lunch I decided to purchase them. I like how when Pete striked out or missed a pop ball playing in the outfield Pete kept his cool. Going to get Pete's Day at the beach when it comes out on the 21st of May too! Because it's all good!

Museum Administration 2.0 (American Association for State and Local History)

Review

This lively revision of Museum Administration brings it up to date with fresh and relevant examples, expanded explanations of complex operations like strategic planning and financial management, and above all, attention to the changing contexts—cultural, political, and legal—that impact museum operations. Issues like diversity, inclusiveness, and access are threaded throughout the chapters so that readers understand that challenges must be tackled on many fronts. My students—emerging museum professionals—will benefit from this comprehensive introduction, as will all who work in museums, whether board members, volunteers, or seasoned staff. (Cynthia Robinson, director of Museum Studies Program, Tufts University)This is an impressive revision to Genoways’s and Ireland’s venerable Museum Administration. Ms. Catlin-Legutko’s emphasis on the importance of strategic planning for museums, with carefully-crafted steps for completion, is invaluable, as is the chapter on finance. This book thoughtfully weaves together ethics, best practice, and “how to” recommendations with provocative case studies. Terrific! (Nancy Bryk, Assistant Professor, Historic Preservation, Eastern Michigan University)
