From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2- In Big Lunch, Pete decides to make a sandwich. Of course, the more he adds, the bigger it becomes. This is a good thing because he is really, really hungry. He forgets to remove the wrappers and adds cans, jars, and boxes to the ever-teetering tower of items. As he piles on the food, children's giggles will grow right along with the expanding "sandwich." Once it becomes too big for the small cat to consume, he must think of a clever solution to his dilemma, which he does with a little help from his friends. In Play Ball!, Pete is baseball ready and his team, the Rocks, are facing the Rolls in a big game. The players warm up and, when the game is over, both sides greet one another with high fives. Even though Pete does not play his best game, he has a good attitude about making mistakes and not being sad about errors he made. This is a great title to spark a discussion about sportsmanship. In both books, simple cartoon art in bold colors and large text make the books a treat for beginning readers.-Janene Corbin, Rosebank Elementary School, Nashville, TNα(c) Copyright 2013. The Pete-the-Cat books are our favorites in the "My First Level, I Can Read!" series. Pete may not be as well known as Little Critter, Biscuit, Fancy Nancy, or the Berenstain Bears, but his groovy cool factor moves him to the top of our list.Unlike some of the "I Can Read" books, the Pete books usually have a complete story, with a clear beginning, a couple of developments in the middle, and then a satisfying ending. I like that even in very early readers. What happens makes sense and the endings are sensible, and groovy. Each fully illustrated page has two sentences, running from four to seven words each. That's a nice length and a good and fair challenge for a little starting reader. The drawings fully support the text, and while they look a bit amateurish at first the characters are actually expressive and presented effectively. The "message" if you want to call it that, of this book is that you just have to try your best, and whether you get a hit or strike out, whether you drop the fly ball or catch it, the important point is to do your very best. Pete always gives it his all and that what makes him such an interesting hero for such an early reading level series. So, this is one of the few early readers books that strikes me as "set worthy" and we've been happy to collect them all over time. The paperback versions are particularly good value.
For those of you who are Pete the Cat fans, and baseball fans alike, this book is fantastic. It focuses on the aspect of perseverance through trying, failing and finally succeeding: something that all kids should understand and sadly don't (no, you are not the best at everything you do immediately but rather through practice). My kids loved it and yours will, too.
LOVED this book! My 5 year old is OBSESSED with baseball. Last year, at the age of 4, he was bumped up to play youth baseball (coach pitch 5 & 6 yr olds). I was amazed about the poor sportsmanship by many of the players (especially the talk coming from their mouths). This book nails sportsmanship, LOVE IT! My husband and I plan to coach next year and I plan to buy every player this book. The #1 rule in any sport should always be respect, sportsmanship, and playing as a team. P.S my boys (ages 3 & 5) liked this book too. It is easy to read and understand.
Pete the Cat books are always a hit with my kids. (boys ages 3 and 5) The stories are clear and concise, the font is large and there aren't too many words on each page. Pete the Cat books are perfect for kids in pre-K or Kindergarten that are just learning to read. Most of the Pete the Cat books end up with some kind of "lesson" about sharing or trying your hardest even if you don't win and can seem kind of cheesy to me but my kids still enjoy them. The illustrations are super cute and make the book very engaging for those who cannot read and are just being read to.
This book series is one of my son’s favorites. He is a toddler and can’t read yet, but the simple storylines and colorful drawings keep him entertained and he loves retelling the story as he remembers it. I can see this also coming in handy in a few years when he is reading.
Perfect for my 4-year old who has just started reading. The repetitive characters are great and she really likes them. The books are relatively short and the pages are one or two lines. Perfect for new readers with easy words and relatively few difficult words.
I bought this book for my ( now) 7 yr old grand son who loves Pete The Cat books and w/ this 1, he was so happy because he loves anything to do w/ sports!
My son is a big fan of Pete the Cat we even got him at Pete the Cat stuffed animal. Big that was a big hit I love Early Reader books, and when I discovered this book and Pete's Big Lunch I decided to purchase them. I like how when Pete striked out or missed a pop ball playing in the outfield Pete kept his cool. Going to get Pete's Day at the beach when it comes out on the 21st of May too! Because it's all good!
