Review

“Pornland . . . will now be the starting point for serious discussions about how porn shapes and distorts social and sexual norms. Dines understands both the economics and cultural power of the pornography industry perhaps better than anyone ever has.”—Jackson Katz, author of The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help“[A] thoughtful analysis of pornography’s infiltration into the American economy, its detrimental effects on the sexual and emotional health of women and men, and its ability to perpetuate both sexism and racism.”—Veronica Arellano, Library Journal   “Dines brilliantly exposes porn’s economics, pervasiveness, and impact with scholarship as impeccable as her tone is reasonable. This book will change your life. Ignore it at your peril.”—Robin Morgan   “An eyes-wide-open look at the way the porn industry exploits and damages the gift of our sexuality to fuel itself.”—Wendy Maltz, coauthor of The Porn Trap: The Essential Guide to Overcoming Problems Caused by Pornography   “Bravo to Gail Dines! She exposes a huge problem of our time that few people are willing to confront. Dines follows the extensive money trail, uncovering the role of corporate duplicity and greed while showing how steadily pornography has infiltrated into everyday life from almost cradle to grave.”—Diane Levin, coauthor of So Sexy, So Soon

I purchased and read this book with optimism. I have grown up with porn addiction growing up as a teenager from low self esteem and social awkwardness. I'm not the typical savage male who attacks feminists online.. I actually side with feminists almost all the time on political and health points. My issue with this book is that I don't believe in the author who wrote it. It also is a very repetitive piece of writing. You can save yourself money by going online and watching Gail's lectures.Gail is painting a narrative that men who watch porn are terrible and violent people. While I'm not denying the reality of the majority of men acting like misogynists pigs.. There is no objective proof that porn is the sole catalyst of the problem. There are people out there with porn addiction who are morally strong people. She also doesn't touch upon women who might enjoy porn or feminists in the porn industry.. I know that'a controversial statement.. But she doesn't mention how women like Candida Royalle and Nina Hartley have proved sex positive feminism works, whereas anti-porn feminists are still riding Andrea Dworkin's illogical ramblings.. Dines being inspired by Dworkin, a woman who admitted in her own books to having porn and sexual addiction issues well before adulthood.I'm not advocating addiction porn addiction at all.. But has porn hijacked sexuality? The answer is no.

The argument in this book is too simplistic and the fact that Dines claims that "African American Males" are objectified by the "racist stereotyping" of their genitalia reveals that she is lost in her own worldview. To think, that the men in porn are insulted that they are dehumanized by the size of their genitalia. My, gosh. The problem with "feminist arguments" as with arguments for any other social class is that it generalizes about an entire population. This is why there will never be an end to the argument and conflict will continue. The argument against porn is one against media that has become pathological. It is not an argument against "men" or a condemnation against "sex".However, Dines is trying to reinforce "conservative values" by bring shifting the focus away from "sex" and toward "love". However, she is also arguing for "conservative cultural mores" in that she promotes "relationships" and I presume does not like "serial monogamy". The fact remains that "feminism" is partly to blame for the current state of porn. The problem is that "all women are not created equal" and some will pay for the crimes of others.Feminists only claim to being "women" is that they have "vaginas". This is no different than a man's claim to being a "man" in that he has a "penis". What "feminists" don't understand is that the subjugation of women is to control the sexuality of "desirable females", but has the effect of offending those who are "marginalizes" who would otherwise benefit from overpowering men. These women would then subjugate "desirable males". The problem that we face is that the "desirable" are prisoners to the "undesirable", but conflation can occur "conditionally and situationally".When feminism wins, guess who is going to take advantage of the situation? If feminists want to be taken seriously, just like African Americans, they would have to take a stand against their own. The fact that Dines argues against "violence" is objective, in that these are crimes, but when she continues toward "sexism", she must distinguish against those who perpetuate it, or she criminalizes all men, yet she bans all behaviors, irrespective of "intent". Furthermore, her claim of "racism" now aligns her with African Americans, who are also "not all equal". She now reinforces "racism" along with "sexism" which will increased the "violence". How these will manifest themselves and by whom will be a creative process as it has been, ongoing.Porn is not meant to be "politically correct" and it's goal is to provoke the public conscience. Porn's intent is on breaking down the controls that have been installed to control sexuality, though the argument against porn seems to only want to reinforce it, but porn has lead the way to the feminist revolution. Had it not been for sexuality, women would still be in "chastity belts". Regardless, the number one consumer of porn is the "Middle East", yet these people are so conservative that women wear burkas. The fact remains that "a crime is a crime is a crime". People have rights and special designations beyond this only make the designee a target by the opposition. Like I have stated, previously, the struggle is against the pathological, and if one cannot make this distinction, one is lost in the arguments, but will foolishly facilitate the problem. Until all of the "Feminists" and members of the "Men's Rights Groups" are dead, heroes and heroines will be victims of social problems. The same is true of any other issue. The reason the problems exist is because most of these "intellectuals" aren't that good looking.

This book is a powerful look at the intersection of pornography and gendered violence. After reading the text I facilitated a discussion on pornography with a group of fraternity men and I was really pleased with the conversation we had. Dines is clearly a strong source of expertise in the issues related to violence in pornography.

This was a great book. It opened my eyes about how commercialized the porn industry is. Dines does a great job of demonstrating the violence that is endemic in porn and also does a great job of demonstrating how this is impacting society. I was particulalry interested in the chapter on racism in pornography. I am glad she included this tidbit because it is not discussed in main stream enough.

I would say that people should at the very least give this a try to see if they can really keep watching porn after reading about it like this.

Great book packed full of information

This is a very interesting book that looks at the effects of pornography on the human psyche and the consequential social collective. Taking into consideration the appallingly graphic violence of the modern version of pornography, it’s no surprise that the population and more specifically the younger generations are suffering mental and emotional trauma. The toxic memes from these videos are encouraged into our social space, the moral fibre of our culture is now eroded away quite blatantly. The purpose of this attack on human consciousness is considered by the writer to be profit-based. However, I think the question of why is up to the reader to ask and come to his/her own conclusions.I think anyone who either opposes or supports the production and commercialisation of pornography should read this book.

Excellent analysis of the field. One line still resonates "Do you want capitalist to determine your sexuality?"

Saltwater Buddha: A Surfer's Quest to Find Zen on the Sea, by Jaimal Yogis

From Publishers Weekly

A journalist, photographer, surfer and Zen Master, Yogis began the life of a roving seeker his junior year of high school, when he ran away from his Sacramento, Calif. home to learn how to surf in Hawaii. His subsequent travels include a handful of prime surfing spots, but Yogis's more arresting journey is spiritual, taking him to monasteries in France and Berkley, Calif., and deep into the living tradition of Zen Buddhism. Captured here in short chapters and wonderful, visual prose, Yogis's coming-of-age odyssey also takes readers into the culture of indigenous Hawaiians, who believe the gods were surfers. Yogis's long-time surfing mentor Rom provides insight into the science of surfing, ocean swells, the bathymetry of the continental shelf, deep water canyons and sea mounts. Even land lovers will find Yogis's lessons resonant and entertaining, but surfers will find this a quick, surprisingly deep tribute to the quest for surf and serenity. "Jaimal's story is, in part, an adventure story in which the sea is a powerful antagonist, at once the siren and the ogre, irresistible and terrifying in its sheer, monstrous power. For this author, it's a voracious and demanding lover, and he is skilled at summoning its ever-changing presence." Longing for the beach, homesick for California, and feeling stressed and burdened by the anxieties of every-day life, I turned to this book after learning about it on a podcast.I read this book in an evening. Yogis' easy prose struck a cord. His message is universal; you may not surf or have a relationship with the sea, but his imagery and uses of symbolism and metaphor make his story attainable to many. I found solace and compassion in each page. I am more than eager and ready to read his second book!

Strictly speaking, this is not a book about surfing. It's also not a book about Zen Buddhism. Saltwater Buddha is a book about the spaces between, where Zen and surfing coincide and coexist, or more specifically where Zen and the ocean coincide and coexist.Reading this book is like being in the ocean, insulated and buffered and supported by what is all around. In his quest to find a happy medium, a middle-ground road where he can comfortably live his own life, Jaimal Yogis takes his readers on a gentle journey. It's a memoir, but it's more than that. If Yogis as a writer immerses us in snippets of his life story, as readers we become lulled into being immersed. The book has a lot of description of surfing and a lot of description of Zen practice, but it's tempered by Yogis' gently cynical outlook on life.Ultimately the book's teachings boil down to the essence of simply being, and that's not a bad thing to consider. It's a quick and easy and enjoyable read, well written, and it left me feeling contented not for myself, but for Yogis and his journey. The book is peppered with quotes on Zen and surfing, and the selected quotes add so much to the story that they practically merit their own meditation session.Gentle and peaceful: those are the words I keep coming back to for this book.

This book is about coming to age, life journey, surfing, and Zen. It is well written, funny, phylosophical, soulful and such a pleasure to read. I am a female in my fifities, born and raised in Sovet Union, living in Florida, USA, working for a law firm, yet, I felt like Jaimal Yogis was my other incarnation. This is a mark of great writer and a great literature when you read an author from different generation, different part of the globe and you recognize yourself and wonder, how does he know this about me? I really enjoyed this book and since read All Our Waves are Water and loved it just as much. Project Fear is next on my list.

This is one of my favorite books. I've read it several times and gifted copies of it to friends and family. Jaimal's storytelling is vivid and enlightening. I've highlighted the heck out of my digital copy because there are so many parts I like to revisit. It makes me want to run for the ocean, or buy a ticket to any far-flung island and just go, be there, and face whatever comes along. What an experience that would be!I also highly recommend his other books, The Fear Project and the newest, All Our Waves Are Water.

It’s a pleasure for me to rate Saltwater Buddha because of the inspiration it arouses about surfing and meditation. Thank you very much for the great book! Both surf and meditation are things to be more and more spread and available for all, mainly meditation of course! To meditate you don't need anything else besides your body and mind. I don’t surf anymore, but I practice Vipassana Meditation and metabhavana also. I wish to Jaimal and to all readers good waves and good meditation!

Much gratitude to Jaimal Yogis for bringing us this awesome treat. I have dog-eared many pages. I bought a paperback so I would have it on my end table for easy everyday access. Looking forward to re-visiting his story often. This book has challenged my typical thought process...so happy for this change of pace.

I really wasn’t sure if I’d like this book as I thought it would be primarily about Buddhism, although there is a little of that, that’s not all what the book is all about. It’s a memoir of Jaimals life, running away to Hawaii as a teenager, his relationship with his father, living and surfing in Hawaii, California, and of all places Brooklyn, NY in the winter while attending University. Very enjoyable. It was a quick read, interesting, and I couldn’t put it down.

I love this book! I read it at my favorite body-surfing beach over a two-day period. Many other reviewers have described the content in detail, so I'll just say the author's humble honesty was what made it so compelling to me. His story of personal exploration and awareness seemed to be simultaneously intensely individual and reassuringly universal. Such a wise, open mind for someone so young. I heard him on San Diego NPR which was what prompted me to order the book; his author voice is very simliar to his interview voice: funny, truthful, generous, and down-to-earth. And very, very connected to the water. I loved his description of waves as being partially "the memory of wind". The book is educational without ever being academic or preachy. A perfect read for anyone who loves the ocean! Mary Lee Moser, author, There and Back: A Journal Companion for Special Needs Parents

One-Punch Man volume was a fantastic read with plenty of comedy and action all throughout. Though Saitama is the One Punch Man getting everything in as little as one punch or even consecutive ones, he still has a great partner by his side Genos who really offers us the traditional nearly perfect hero type character that would be the lead in numerous stories. Though ONE hasnt made him that way and often makes him the one most can relate too, Genos is still fun to have around and great. He is personally my favorite and I am glad he remains a a part of this series. Saitama is a good lead as well and one that gives many memorable panels with his facial expressions when things happen.Quality wise, though this series is originally posted online in an online magazine in which Murata takes full advantage of throwing in color pages, the Black and White version of the moments are still articitically rendered well. He does good using great use of perspectives, blurring the text at times even to focus on some details in the panels. One must also commend how the SFX arent just on the same plane as the text but move in line with the action too. The redrawers had to have done miracles to get it looking this good even as often times the words would move in line with hose the characters flew, or be at the same angle in line with the angle of whatever action is happening in a panel. It is a small touch but one that added a great additional layer of submersion to the action.One-Punch Man is off to an amazing start and Viz has done well to do nothing to inhibit the experience that Murata and One has aimed for. Getting it digitally is a great thing and with numerous page spreads it looks quite beautiful on the kindle hd. Its a must buy.Included bonuses is a bonus chapter of Saitama in his school days age, as well as two bonus illustrations, and one short two or so page snowy hill story with Saitama.

Step 1: Stop reading this.Step 2: Start to read OPM.Step 3: Amazing art.Step 4: Comedy gold.Step 5: Realize it's so good.Step 6: Badass characters.Step 7: Cool story development.Step 8: Intense action sequences.Step 9: Tear through 10+ volumes faster than a crack addict.Step 10: Review eagerly while awaiting next installment.

I love the television series, it has perfect timing and everything that makes these manga fantastic. What this manga offers that the anime does not is small side stories, even more impressive artwork (like, seriously, wow), and obviously the opportunity to delve into the story further than where the anime ends.If you haven't seen the anime, just know that incredible artwork, impressive action, and a hero world filled with monsters all exist primarily for the sake of comedy. The main PUNCHline is that Saitama is an all powerful being that is dissapointed in the life of being a hero because no creature in existence can offer him a challenge. But the story doesn't dwell on this issue and offers Saitama situations and opportunity to overcome hurdles that raw power wouldn't be the answer to. Also it's fun just watching Saitama interact with the characters around him and tbeir responses. Lastly, once again, the artwork is incredible.

One Punch Man, Vol. 1 is the beginning of a former webcomic that went viral, getting over 10,000,000 hits. It's the story of a simple-faced (masked?) superhero, which as a manga reader, I found rather novel. Japan tends to humanize its heroes more than America does, which humanizes its heroes more than Mexico does. In Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, he draws a line between the "realistic" and the "iconic," and One Punch Man's face is what McCloud would call iconic, along the lines of Jeff Smith's Bone or Herge's Tin-Tin, both of which feature simple-faced characters surrounded by detailed landscapes. If you like that style, welcome to One Punch Man.The action starts with a battle that - predictably - ends with one punch, before going back in time three years to a humorous escapade which ends up with the main character's first battle against a monster. See, each chapter is called "Punch 1" or "Punch 2," and each chapter ends with him hitting a monster or enemy and stopping it with one punch. It reminds me of my old days in karate, where we sparred under "Ikken Hissatsu" rules, meaning, "one punch, one kill." Of course, we'd do best two out of three, so there was a zombie angle. For a manga with such humble origins, it has incredibly detailed artwork, most likely computer aided. I like how even the sound effects are redrawn in English. It's a very good, very funny manga that's a pleasure to read. The pages slip by very easily, reminiscent of One Piece. This is an excellent first issue, although the quality does seem to wax and wane. I'm going to read future volumes. The only question is whether I'll buy one every month or so, or buy every single one and try to power through them at $4.49 each on Kindle. Good. ****1/2

I've watched the anime for One-Punch Man and that's actually what got me to read the manga. Overall the anime did its job by retelling the story exactly as its laid out in the manga (the source material for the anime) which unfortunately made reading the manga short of boring as it was almost like watching reruns. Despite that as its no fault of the manga since I watched the anime version first so I won't hold it against it.The artwork is phenomenal and i just really love when Saitama is drawn as a serious fighter versus his normal basic silly look. The goal is to read all the mangas before season 2 comes out so I can see how well the anime does to matching the source material.

Why the 1/2-star rating for this timeless and influential classic by one of 19th-c. America's most important journalists?5 stars for this classic text -- which I've loved since I first read it in the 9th grade, as one of the texts required by my American History teacher. (Now a history teacher myself, I often share it with my students, who uniformly love it.)1/2 star for the fact that this edition of the book is a 'legal bootleg'. That is, an unnamed, mystery 'editor' has taken a book that has slipped into the public domain because the author died before 1927 (Bly died in 1922 and thus just missed the 1927 copyright cut-off); re-packaged it as an 'edited' and 'revised' edition (why isn't the editor named? why aren't the 'revisions and updates' annotated within the text, per the standard for edited histories?); and re-published it under the 'Create Space' imprimatur to enrich himself/herself without sharing a dime with Bly's estate or original publisher. (Ian L. Munro's publishing house produced the book in 1887.)This is so uncool to me as a historian, history teacher, and Nellie Bly super-fan that I have no problem undercutting the profits of the aforementioned 'legal bootlegger' by sharing the following information with anyone who is interested:(1) You can save your dough and read an estate-sanctioned, totally free, e-Book version of Bly's _Ten Days in a Madhouse_ at the University of Pennsylvania's Digital Library website. Cut and paste the last 14 words of the previous sentence into your favorite search engine (I use the one that rhymes with Droogle or the one that rhymes with Tuck Tuck Moe) and the website will show up as one of the top search results.(2) Alternatively, if you'd like to listen to an estate-sanctioned, audio book version of Bly's work, then swap out the reference to the University of Pennsylvania's Digital Library and add the words "Internet Archive." The non-profit Internet Archive's really cool audio book version will pop up as one of your top search results. (Still more awesome, the Internet Archive offers the option of either listening online or downloading in any one of several different formats so you can listen via your device while on the go.)As the quintessential Progressive Era "Muckraker" -- which you'll recall from high school was the late-19th- and early-20th-c. term for the cadre of reform-minded investigative journalists that Bly exemplified -- Bly's track record indicates that if she were looking down from Journalist Heaven, she wouldn't object if you passed up a 'legal bootleg' of her work and instead checked out one of the aforementioned, free, estate-sanctioned, non-profit-archive-hosted versions. Indeed, I daresay that the brave, talented, fair-minded Bly would stand up and cheer.Just my $00.02; YMMV.

After reading all the great reviews on this book I was excited to be getting a copy and eagerly waited with intense anticipation, just to be extremely disappointed. I was left feeling like a major part of the book was missing. There were no illustrations just a reference to sketches at the end of the article. Very little was mentioned about the experiences while inside the Asylum. Everyone else must have read a different issue or something. I do NOT recommend buying this particular issue - ISBN# is in photos, as well as pic of the book cover and the "notation" about sketches. The are 52 pages/104 front and back so it doesn't appear to have pages missing, just content.

There are a number of publishers offering this book.In any of the publications, readers will find the main story of how journalist Elizabeth Cochran Seaman (pen name Nellie Bly) posed as an insane person in order to gain entry into Bellevue hospital on Blackwell's Island. This is a revealing look not only into how people were institutionalized 130 years ago, but also the lack of knowledge of medical doctors at that time. The book also includes two short articles on employment agencies and women working in paper box factories. What makes this publication different than others? There are hand drawn illustrations throughout other publications depicting Ms. Seaman at various stages of her investigations. The backs of those books feature pictures of Ms. Seaman and a list of words that might not be well-known to modern readers. The Annotations section offers an overview of Blackwell's Island Lunatic Asylum as well as notes on Ms. Seaman's participation. Her other books are also listed. This publication offers the main story and the two articles, and nothing else.Excellent book for those interested in history or just curious about this slice of life in New York over a century ago. Four stars.

Nellie Bly was the pen name of Elizabeth Jane Cochrane who was an American journalist. She was born in May of 1864 and died in January 1922. While she was working for a newspaper in New York City she was given an undercover assignment to feign insanity and allow herself to be committed to the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island in order to write an expose of the inhumane way the women in the Asylum were being treated by caretakers, nurses and even doctors. This book is the true account of what she observed while in that Asylum. She is amazed at how readily people in the medical profession proclaim her insane and how quickly they decide she needs to be committed to an Asylum. Once an inmate in the "Lunatic Asylum" she is dismayed when she sees the patients being taunted, laughed at, and even struck by nurses. The patients were also given inadequate clothing to keep them warm in a hospital that has no heat because the heat is turned on only for certain months of the year. She observes the cold, disgusting and inedible food that is served to the patients while the nurses are being served hot meals and being given fresh fruit. This book, which she wrote from notes she took while in the Asylum, singlehandedly brought about serious reform in this country in the way people are diagnosed as mentally incompetent and also in the way they are treated if they have to be committed. I can't say I "enjoyed" this book but it was very enlightening.
