Saltwater Buddha: A Surfer's Quest to Find Zen on the Sea, by Jaimal Yogis

From Publishers Weekly

A journalist, photographer, surfer and Zen Master, Yogis began the life of a roving seeker his junior year of high school, when he ran away from his Sacramento, Calif. home to learn how to surf in Hawaii. His subsequent travels include a handful of prime surfing spots, but Yogis's more arresting journey is spiritual, taking him to monasteries in France and Berkley, Calif., and deep into the living tradition of Zen Buddhism. Captured here in short chapters and wonderful, visual prose, Yogis's coming-of-age odyssey also takes readers into the culture of indigenous Hawaiians, who believe the gods were surfers. Yogis's long-time surfing mentor Rom provides insight into the science of surfing, ocean swells, the bathymetry of the continental shelf, deep water canyons and sea mounts. Even land lovers will find Yogis's lessons resonant and entertaining, but surfers will find this a quick, surprisingly deep tribute to the quest for surf and serenity. Review

"Jaimal's story is, in part, an adventure story in which the sea is a powerful antagonist, at once the siren and the ogre, irresistible and terrifying in its sheer, monstrous power. For this author, it's a voracious and demanding lover, and he is skilled at summoning its ever-changing presence." Longing for the beach, homesick for California, and feeling stressed and burdened by the anxieties of every-day life, I turned to this book after learning about it on a podcast.I read this book in an evening. Yogis' easy prose struck a cord. His message is universal; you may not surf or have a relationship with the sea, but his imagery and uses of symbolism and metaphor make his story attainable to many. I found solace and compassion in each page. I am more than eager and ready to read his second book!

Strictly speaking, this is not a book about surfing. It's also not a book about Zen Buddhism. Saltwater Buddha is a book about the spaces between, where Zen and surfing coincide and coexist, or more specifically where Zen and the ocean coincide and coexist.Reading this book is like being in the ocean, insulated and buffered and supported by what is all around. In his quest to find a happy medium, a middle-ground road where he can comfortably live his own life, Jaimal Yogis takes his readers on a gentle journey. It's a memoir, but it's more than that. If Yogis as a writer immerses us in snippets of his life story, as readers we become lulled into being immersed. The book has a lot of description of surfing and a lot of description of Zen practice, but it's tempered by Yogis' gently cynical outlook on life.Ultimately the book's teachings boil down to the essence of simply being, and that's not a bad thing to consider. It's a quick and easy and enjoyable read, well written, and it left me feeling contented not for myself, but for Yogis and his journey. The book is peppered with quotes on Zen and surfing, and the selected quotes add so much to the story that they practically merit their own meditation session.Gentle and peaceful: those are the words I keep coming back to for this book.

This book is about coming to age, life journey, surfing, and Zen. It is well written, funny, phylosophical, soulful and such a pleasure to read. I am a female in my fifities, born and raised in Sovet Union, living in Florida, USA, working for a law firm, yet, I felt like Jaimal Yogis was my other incarnation. This is a mark of great writer and a great literature when you read an author from different generation, different part of the globe and you recognize yourself and wonder, how does he know this about me? I really enjoyed this book and since read All Our Waves are Water and loved it just as much. Project Fear is next on my list.

This is one of my favorite books. I've read it several times and gifted copies of it to friends and family. Jaimal's storytelling is vivid and enlightening. I've highlighted the heck out of my digital copy because there are so many parts I like to revisit. It makes me want to run for the ocean, or buy a ticket to any far-flung island and just go, be there, and face whatever comes along. What an experience that would be!I also highly recommend his other books, The Fear Project and the newest, All Our Waves Are Water.

It’s a pleasure for me to rate Saltwater Buddha because of the inspiration it arouses about surfing and meditation. Thank you very much for the great book! Both surf and meditation are things to be more and more spread and available for all, mainly meditation of course! To meditate you don't need anything else besides your body and mind. I don’t surf anymore, but I practice Vipassana Meditation and metabhavana also. I wish to Jaimal and to all readers good waves and good meditation!

Much gratitude to Jaimal Yogis for bringing us this awesome treat. I have dog-eared many pages. I bought a paperback so I would have it on my end table for easy everyday access. Looking forward to re-visiting his story often. This book has challenged my typical thought process...so happy for this change of pace.

I really wasn’t sure if I’d like this book as I thought it would be primarily about Buddhism, although there is a little of that, that’s not all what the book is all about. It’s a memoir of Jaimals life, running away to Hawaii as a teenager, his relationship with his father, living and surfing in Hawaii, California, and of all places Brooklyn, NY in the winter while attending University. Very enjoyable. It was a quick read, interesting, and I couldn’t put it down.

I love this book! I read it at my favorite body-surfing beach over a two-day period. Many other reviewers have described the content in detail, so I'll just say the author's humble honesty was what made it so compelling to me. His story of personal exploration and awareness seemed to be simultaneously intensely individual and reassuringly universal. Such a wise, open mind for someone so young. I heard him on San Diego NPR which was what prompted me to order the book; his author voice is very simliar to his interview voice: funny, truthful, generous, and down-to-earth. And very, very connected to the water. I loved his description of waves as being partially "the memory of wind". The book is educational without ever being academic or preachy. A perfect read for anyone who loves the ocean! Mary Lee Moser, author, There and Back: A Journal Companion for Special Needs Parents
