Review

"This is one of those books that barely mentions planning as such, but has lots of implications for it. It's short but will repay some extra quiet time...Their goal is to get us to look at the world and its systems in a fresh new way." (Planning)"Resilience Thinking is an impressive and highly successful effort to explain complex ecological and social interactions and changes in a unified framework and in language accessible to a wide audience. This book should stimulate extensive discussions on these critical issues and innovative ways to approach them." (Harold Mooney Achilles Professor of Environmental Biology, Stanford University)"Resilience Thinking provides a much-needed accessible entrée into a concept that holds the key to our future.... Full of wisdom, sophisticated science, and practical guidance, this book provides profound ideas, insights, and hope to scientists, students, managers, and planners alike." (Jane Lubchenco Distinguished Professor of Zoology, Oregon State University)"Resilience Thinking is an essential guidebook to a powerful new way of understanding our world—and of living resiliently within it—developed in recent decades by an international team of ecologists. With five clear and compelling case studies drawn from regions as diverse as Florida, Sweden, and Australia, this book shows how all highly adaptive systems—from ecologies to economies—go through regular cycles of growth, reorganization, and renewal and how our failures to understand the basic principles of resilience have often led to disaster. Resilience Thinking gives us the conceptual tools to help us cope with the bewildering surprises and challenges of our new century." (Thomas Homer-Dixon Professor of political science, University of Toronto)"...a clear, readable, non-academic explanation of the difference between an optimization mindset and a resilience mindset." (GreenSpirit)

I come from a background in conservation and complex systems. Like the author, I have been struggling to describe the very important worldview of systems thinking and the need to apply this thinking to ecological issues. Systems science has a language of its own which has yet to be translated for effective use by those conservation people who make important ecological decisions. I think of folks like the field biologists who work with public lands agencies. Honestly, the systems science people have a long way to go in describing their critically important ideas. The author of this book makes a valiant attempt to bridge the gap but is entrapped in buzzwords and dense text. He uses the word "resilience" when he should probably be describing ecosystems and sustainability in terms of Nature's interconnections (energy conduits) that hold these systems together by transporting and transforming energy. Broken connections are the driving force behind broken ecosystems and are the cause of reduced resilience/sustainability.I can't be too harsh because I find myself with the same struggle of trying to translate the systems research work of Santa Fe Institute (and others) into useful, applicable ecological knowledge at the field level.I have same the same minor complaints as other reviewers. The editing is poor in places. Someone from the outside should have worked with the author to make the book more readable . Nonetheless, the use of good case studies did offset the dense and often technical/obtuse writing.

This is a fantastic little book. The presentation of complex adaptive systems and the things that determine how resilient they are is crystal clear and concise. My background is computer science research, with a fair amount of experience in complex systems from that angle, and this book was still excellent for putting things into simple and straightforward language without dumbing it down or skipping important connections. My other life is as a permaculture designer. If you're not familiar with that, permaculture is a discipline that seeks to build ecologically sound, self-sustaining human settlements. Currently there is very little in the permaculture literature regarding systems and resilience, and personally I think that this is the next big step forward. This book is the best introduction to those ideas that I've ever seen, and I heartily recommend it to anyone getting into permaculture design.

The author presents us a view based on resilience and provides practical examples of application of this concept existing in several areas around the world. As a beginning this book is very helpful, once most of existing ecosystems are under considerable threats and need more complex management.

This short book is an excellent introduction to resilience thinking. The core texts in this field tend to be rather daunting compendiums (see Gunderson and Holling's Panarchy) that only the already committed will read. This is a light introduction to the basic ideas and has lovely and useful case studies woven in. The core ideas of resilience thinking come from work in ecological systems theory over the past thirty years or so and are an application of work on complex adaptive systems. A key point is that natural and economic systems can only be understood and managed if their codependence is made explicit. Basic concepts such as regime (a set of connected stable states), threshold (boundaries between regimes) and the adaptation cycle (growth -> accumulation -> release -> reorganization) are well explained. The case studies cover The Florida Everglades, The Goulburn-Broken Catchment area in Australia, Coral Reefs in the Caribbean, the Northern Highland Lake District in Wisconsin and the Kristianstads Vattenrike Wetlands in Sweden. All of these cases come up frequently in conversations on resilience and are good touch points.I expect to see applications of resilience thinking to many areas beyond ecology and resource management over the next decade: it is widely relevant to organizational theory and urban planning. It will be one input to a new syntheses that replaces our current and obsolete economic theory. One small caveat, the book has some well done illustrations but the quality of the photos is dreadful.

Great topics discussed. Leans left as in progressive on its fews of the future sustainability of our ecosystem. I agreed with about 25% of the subject matter and do not agree with most of their predictive suggestions. A lot of reaching or predictable teachings.

This is a great introduction to learning about how the concept of resilience changes the approach to managing social-ecological systems. I use it when teaching introductory classes in environmental studies.

Dry reading, not current, but examples are not repetitive.

This is a wonderful book to understand the concept of resilience and its relationship with sustainability. Very well written and the study cases make easy to grasp the deep conceptual meaning of system thinking.

From the Inside Flap

Paul Blaisdell was the man behind the monsters in such movies as The She Creature, Invasion of the Saucer Men, Not of This Earth, It! Terror from Beyond Space and many others. Working in primarily low-budget films, Blaisdell was forced to rely on greasepaint, guts and, most importantly, an unbounded imagination for his creations. From his inauspicious beginning through The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow (1959), the construction of Blaisdell's monsters and the making of the movies in which they appeared are fully detailed here. Blaisdell's work in the early monster magazines of the 1960s is also covered.

I highly recommend this book it is very well written and it is nice to see Paul getting credit for his genius. The book covers all the films he worked on in his all too short career delving into his creations and some of the people he worked with. It goes into a decent amount of detail for each film and has a pretty good number of photos from each showcasing the props and or costumes he created for them. It also goes into some detail on how he created them and the materials he used so I recommend it even more strongly for anyone thinking about going into effects work. I have always thought it was shameful the man was so under appreciated during his lifetime as the creations he manged to make with next to no budget are awe inspiring. It is also shameful he ever got to work on a movie with the production values and budget worthy of his talent. This book at least documents his work and by reading it one may glean whispers of what may have been.

B Movie makeup and special effects artist Paul Blaisdell is nicely remembered here for his work on movies like Invasion of the Saucer Men, It! The Terror from Beyond Space, and others. Abandoned by American International when they changed gears in the 1960's for color, gothic-style movies like the Edgar Alan Poe films, Blaisdell left behind him a string of creature effects, generally better than revealed by (to be generous) mediocre directors and Speedy Gonzalez shooting schedules. This book wonderfully blends Blaisdell's own history, low-budget movie-making lore at AIP, detailed descrptions of how Blaisdell assembled his work, and an overall look at micro-budget industry trends. I could see this filmed as a movie in the style of Tim Burton's "Ed Wood," although I disagree with the emphasis on Cuddles, the star of She Creature as the highlight in favor of the later big-domed aliens of Invasion of the Saucer Men with their alcohol-shooting needles protruding from their fingers at will. One of his last big jobs was It! The Terror from Beyond Space, featuring a bizarre-looking mask. It's almost disappointing that everyone makes a big deal of stuntman Ray Corrigan's chin sticking out the mouth. It actually added some additional weirdness that might've better benefitted by silence on that score. Great tribute to Blaisdell.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in the beloved monsters created by Blaisdell. The only slight ding I can give it is that it would have been nice to have a few more pictures. However, Palmer is a talented writer and the text is a joy to read. He has gathered information from numerous sources, including information from his personal communications. He also details the contributions of Blaisdell's wife Jackie, and devoted friend Bob Burns, to many of Paul's monsters, props, and effects--information I have not seen so well documented before. What Blaisdell was able to accomplish with very limited resources is amazing, and the "backstory" he often invested in his creations, is something that has ensured their immortality. Palmer also details the sad way in which the movie industry turned its back on Blaisdell, and how he nearly died completely forgotten. A maturing and increasingly sophisticated SciFi and Horror fan-base, who were too quick to ridicule the low-budget films they enjoyed when younger, also contributed to Blaisdell's fade from the scene. I'm glad that now, many people acknowledge this monster-makers unique and iconographic creations. .

I'm a child of the 1950's and fed on Paul's work without really knowing it. I loved "The She Creature" and yes even "The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow". As a 12 year old I admit to getting tears in my eyes when the color ending to "How to Make a Monster" showed the creature from "It Conquered the World" burning up. This is a great tribute to an innovator and genius that American International Pictures apparently never truly appreciated. Having just finished this excellent biography that has again filled me with beautiful memories from my childhood. This 67 year old boy is going to put his DVD copy of "The Day the World Ended" on.

Excellent movie buffs book for 50's el-cheapo horror/sci fi Drive-in Movie fans.Paul Blaisdell's wonderful story of his movie monster creations for Nicholson/Arkoff's AIP Pictures and Roger Cormans movies.Amazing what Blaisdell accomplished with a few garbage bags, candle wax, spirit gum and paint.Bob Burns' contributions are all detailed and thanks to Bob we have some great photographs. You love these movies? Buy this book!!!.

Great book about an unheralded and underappreciated talent!

Wonderful bio/tribute to one of the most underrated and under appreciated monster makers of yesteryear. Making nightmares from nothing. Long live Blaisdell and his creations.

Excellent book!

The worst thing about this book is that the photos are black & white and small. If you go the authors website (search for "treksnappy Kungsleden") you will see beautiful color photos that are much more inspiring. There is also a useful Kungsleden PDF that you can download for $15 from Cody Duncan (search for "distantnorth Kungsleden") - it has more wonderful color photos, and more information about the huts. I am including some information here that I did not see in either this book or in Duncan's PDF.This book came out after I had already started planning for our hike (We hiked from Abisko to Nikkaluokta in August of 2017), so it was useful with our trip plans. However, because the authors were camping rather than sleeping in the huts, they left out some information about the huts that I would have liked to have known before we took our Kungsleden trek. The most crucial bit of information is the fact that if you prepay STF and get a reservation, it does not guarantee you a bed! Beds are given away on first-come basis, if you arrive late to a hut, you may find yourself without a bed to sleep on, even if you have prepaid for a reservation! When too many people arrive at a hut, spare mattresses will be put out on the floor. Overflow people sleep on these mattresses in the kitchens, and if the kitchens are full, then additional hikers sleep in the "drying room", and if even the drying room is full, people have been known to sleep in the woodshed! The hut warden may come by asking for people to sleep two-in-a-bunk in order to free up more beds. The huts run out of spare mattresses, so you may find yourself on the hard wooden floor. It is a good idea to carry a "sleep sack" with you, the blankets and pillows that come with the hut have no facility for being washed after each use. Do a search on "book stfturist.se" to prepay for a hut. We got the STF membership cards because it gives you a discount each night, it takes two weeks for the card to arrive in the US from SwedenObviously, getting to a hut early is a good idea if you wish to procur a bed, especially if you are hiking in the prime season. However, occasionally a large group will travel down the Kungsleden - if you are unfortunate enough to share a hut with one of these large parties, you are pretty much screwed. Be aware that every August there is an event called the Fjallraven Classic, in which 2000 hikers travel from Nikkaluokta to Abisko. Do NOT plan your hike to coincide with this huge event.Abisko Mountain Station: 365 beds.Abiskojaure Mountain Cabin: 40 bedsAlesjaure Mountain Cabin: 80 bedsTjatka Mountain Cabin: 20 bedsSalka Mountain Cabin: 50 bedsSingi Mountain Cabin: We skipped SingiKebnekaise Mountain Station: 220 bedsWe skipped Singi hut because it has no shop to sell you food, and it has no sauna. Singi is at the lowest elevation on the Abisko to Nikkaloutka route, and therefore it is the warmest. Warm isn't necessarily good - we talked to hikers who did spend a night at Singi and they said it was miserable because the mosquitos were so ferocious that you couldn't step outside. There is a marked route that allows you to skip Singi while traveling from Salka to Kebnekaise. This bypass reduces the Salka <-> Kebnekaise distance from 16 miles to 14.5 miles, saving almost an hour of time. The bypass require you to climb about 600 feet, but it is not an arduous climb. Besides, if you stick to the main Kungsleden route and go to Singi before traveling to Kebnekaise, you will find yourself climbing (not steeply) as you head east from Singi. The Singi bypass is clearly marked on the map and it is clearly signposted. The bypass is easy to follow, with cairns. Many people go this way to Kebnekaise. The rooms in the huts are of various sizes. Sometimes we slept in a 4 person room. Sometimes we slept in a room with 20 people (Abiskojaure). The huts all have a Torkrum - a drying room. It is warm place with hooks and clothes-lines where you can hang all your wet gear. It is a good idea to recover your gear as soon as it has dried, because there is a lot demand for space to hang wet stuff. There are saunas at Abiskojaure, Alesjaure, Salka, and Kebnekaise. There is no sauna at Tjatka and Singi. The saunas are nude saunas, but sometimes people wear bathing suits. From 5:00 to 6:30 PM, the saunas are reserved for the women. From 6:30 to 8:00 PM the saunas are exclusively used by the men. From 8:00 to 9:30 PM, the saunas are open to anyone of any gender. The saunas have 3 rooms. The front room is the changing room. This is where everyone takes off their clothes and hangs them on hooks. The second room is a washing room. In the washing room there is a big barrel of hot (boiling!) water and another of cold water. Pour a mix of hot and cold water into your metal basin using the plastic ladle (caution - if you dump boiling water into the metal basin while you are holding it, you might burn yourself. It is hot!!) You can then soap up and pour the water over yourself to rinse off. There is a drain in the floor. There is room for 4 people to wash at the same time. I found that this setup was an effective way to get clean, this was much better than what I was expecting to find along the trail. The third room is the sauna itself. Everyone sits on a row of bleacher benches. The sauna was always very crowded when I tried to go in, so I ended up just washing up and skipping the hot room. It is traditional to run outside (stark naked) and plunge into the nearby cold mountain stream, and then rush back inside the sauna to heat up again. Lots of people try this, and say it feels great! The hut kitchens come with pots and pans, utensils, plates, glasses, mugs, etc. There are 4 or 6 gas burners in each hut (we ate early so that we didn't have to compete with other hikers for access to the burners). You are expected to wash your own dishes, fetch fresh water from the rivers, and dump waste water into special spots. To my surprise, some of the huts had generators, which were used to run the stores. There were refrigerators selling cold beer and cokes. I saw some people using their credit card to pay for shop items - but don't count on the generators running! We brought lots of cash with us.If you arrive early at some of the huts, there are side jaunts that you can do. At Tjatka, there is a big mountain just west of the hut. It looked pretty steep, but the hut warden told me that on the previous day there were "lots" of people who had climbed it. From the top, you can see into Norway. We only climbed up partway because it had snow on the mountainside, and it was too dangerous to go higher. But even climbing just partway up the mountain gave fantastic views up and down the valley. At Salka, you can follow a cairn-marked trail 10 km to the Nallo hut, into a valley of peaks and lakes. We only had time travel about 5 KM - far enough to see the lake, but not close enough to reach the Nallo hut. The valley is called Stuor Reaiddavaggi, the trail is marked on the map.At Kebnekaise, you can hike the 9 KM western route to the summit of Kebnekaise, the highest peak in Sweden. Because the western route does not go over snow, you do not need a guide to hike this path. I believe there is at least 5000' of elevation gain. We had two nights in Kebnekaise, because originally we intended to try climbing the mountain, but instead we opted to take a 18 km (round trip distance) to the Darfaljavri Lake. This hike has some elevation gain, but it takes you to an excellent spot where you can see a big glacier melting into the lake. It wasn't a difficult hike, our total time was 5.5 hours for the entire excursion. When planning your trip, book the reservation at Kebnekaise first. It is difficult to get a reserved room here because it is a popular destination for Swedes who like to come in for a couple of nights and hike to the top of Kebnekaise. Because Kebnekaise and Abisko do have internet connectivity, these Mountain Stations will hold reservations for you (unlike the Mountain huts). The rooms at Kebnekaise have bathrooms and showers at the end of the hall. The showers are popular - they ran out of hot water, so we waited until after dinner for the hot water tanks to refill before showering.Kebnekaise only has wifi in the main building. The dinner at Kebnekaise is quite expensive. If you want, you can utilize a kitchen and cook your own meals. We opted for the dinner, which turned out to be tasty. There is a vegetarian option if you ask for it. The dinner is a bit mysterious. At the beginning of the meal, the staff give a LONG speech in Swedish, presumably about the meal. There is no English translation, so I have no idea what takes so long to explain. The first course is an appetizer bar - full of meats and breads and soup and fish and potatoes. At first, I thought that was the main meal. Both nights of our visit, our table was always the last one permitted to visit the appetizer bar, so some of the best stuff was gone. You have to remove your boots when entering any hut. I saw a guy at Kebnekaise looking for his boots - and when I left 15 minutes later, he was still looking for them. Someone had made off with the wrong pair of boots! That would be a disaster. I am not sure how to protect yourself from boot theft. When we landed in Kiruna, we already had reserved a taxi to shuttle us directly to Abisko. We paid SK1825 to shuttle 4 persons directly from Kiruna airport to Abisko Mountain Station. To make taxi reservations in Kiruna, do a search on "flygtaxi kiruna" or "bokning taxi kiruna".There is a bus from the Kiruna airport to the Kiruna bus station that runs about every half hour for 110 SK each. From the bus station, you catch the #91 bus to Abisko. To get from Nikkaluokta to the Kiruna bus station, you will ride the #92 bus. The #92 bus cost us SK139 per person. You don't buy a ticket, but instead give your credit card to the bus driver. You cannot pay with cash.Food in the huts is obviously expensive. The selection of items for sale is mostly the same between all the huts. The prices were the same in all of the huts. I wrote down some of the items avail at Salka, prices were recorded in August 2017:Granola bar: SK30Potato chips: SK30Can of Guld Beer: SK40Can of Coke: SK25Can of Fanta Orange: SK25Bag of chocolate covered nuts: SK35Marabua Chocolate bar: SK35Bag of peanuts: SK25HelaggsPulver: SK90 (I think this is powdered eggs)Helmjolkspulver: SK120 (Powdered Milk)package of slice salami: SK30Wasa bread: SK15Saltine Crackers: SK30Package of Cookies: SK300.5kg of pasta: SK40Package of olives: SK25Can of Fruit Cocktail: SK55Tin of sardines: SK20Can of chili con carne: SK60Can of Kottbullar (Meatballs): SK65Can of Goulash: SK65Can of lobster: SK30Package Pasta sauce: SK30Jar of Pizza sauce: SK35Box of Svarta Vinbar (black wine): SK20Box instant cheese & broccoli soup: SK30Box of raisins: SK20I hope this helps you plan your journey

From my perspective, this book seeks to cover too many bases: guide to the trail, guide to how to backpack and travel narrative. I would have preferred a guide with a clearer focus. This book gives a nice overview of backpacking in general and the author's experience on their hike of the Kungsleden, but it did not meet my personal needs. Prior to purchasing this book I had read the author's blog, which I enjoyed. I did not find this book to be more helpful than the blog. When doing a long-distance backpacking trip I want a guidebook that acts as a reference throughout my trip; information about the trail and side trails is most helpful. Pages on packing lists, how to use hiking poles, meal plans etc. are simply weight I don't need to carry, so I left this book home for my trip. I did, however, print out and reference the review by Arthur Enyedy many times along the trail. Most hikers hike the Kungsleden from north to south, but the author covers the trail from south to north, so the trail descriptions do not match the experience of most of the book's target audience. I only had time to hike the northernmost section of the trail (Abisko to Singi, then over to Kebnekaise and Nikkoluokta) and chose to stay in huts rather than tent. For 90% of the people I met on the trail (many of whom were tenting), each day's hike was determined by the distance between huts. Guidebooks that hikers from other countries were using broke trail descriptions down by sections between huts. This book is organized around where the author camped along the way rather than the huts (large, identifiable features along the trail). In addition, the author hiked the trail once, so some information is only relevant to the conditions in which the author hiked. She describes a white, fluffy plant which indicates the presence of bogs. I encountered plenty of bogs, but no plant which met the author's description. If you are new to backpacking or just looking to get a sense of what this trail is like, this book may well serve your purposes. (Though the photos on the author's on-line blog are far better, and the blog is free.) If you're looking for a lean trail guide for your hike, this book may well disappoint. If you've already read the blog, and it is a good one, and you've been backpacking before, this book won't give you much new information. All in all, I'm ok with the purchase of the book because I had enjoyed the blog and now the author gets paid a bit more for that. Would I turn to another guidebook by this author or printing press after having read this book? No.

Great written information interspersed with useful tables. Logically formatted and covers everything from getting to the Gungsleden to the full 270 mile trail itself from beginning to end. The latter part of the book is a personal daily accounting of her travels (which I found very interesting). The only slight drawback was that it is written in the South-to-North direction whereas I (and most hikers) travel this trail North-to-South but it’s only a minor inconvenience (I actually read the 4 major sections of the trail in reverse order to account for this). I highly recommend this book to anyone planning or pondering walking Sweden’s Gungsleden Trail hike. I hope this author plans to write more hiking books in the future as she has already been on many long trails around the world and brings a wealth of Trail Knowledge to her writing.

The book seems highlyrushed. It has many mistakes, particularly in the answers/explanations. It is extremely comprehensive, but a little editing goes a long way-- particularly in making a company more reliable. Some mistakes can call into question the integrity of the entire book. However, I will say, for 37$, 2000 questions is very fair, and if you are weak in any particular section and require extra practice, then it is worth (especially if you're low on MCAT funds). The book does seem to cover all of the potential topic (perhaps to the point where it covers extraneous info-- but sometimes more is actually better). All in all, its OKAY, if you need practice in certain areas, and want tons of decent problems. Seriously-- to the editor, a little goes a long way.

Ultimately, this is a good book. It covers a lot and provides useful application for the concepts one needs to know for the MCAT. Additionally, this book gives thorough explanations for most questions, and usually goes over why the right answer is correct and the wrong answers incorrect. This book, however, is not without some flaws (i.e., some answer choices are incorrect despite what the "Answers" section says), so I had to critically assess nearly every answer explanation simply to be safe. If you engage in a thorough review of MCAT concepts prior to using this book, you may find yourself confused if some of the answers or explanations are incorrect, or if there is a typo here and there on units (e.g., answer choices expressed in in^3 when they were meant to be expressed in m^3, or "mg" is written where "mol" is meant). I would give this a three-star review, but ironically, because some answers and units were wrong, to name only a couple things, I found myself thinking critically through my entire review of this book, which is a necessary skill given you will have to evaluate all information you're given on the MCAT and beyond.

Only gave this one less star because the chemistry section is labeled as physiology instead! I thought I was missing a whole part of the book!

Book contains many errors in answers/explanations, especially in the gen chem section. Which is not good for someone who actually needs the help in getting to the correct answer. Makes me question the worth of all next step products.

I like the questions, I read them when am tired of reading and doing passages. Also I think this question book will be most helpful as a pre-MCAT review material. Something to study before you really start studying for the MCAT.

The questions seemed great at first but as everyone else has said, there are typos and mistakes throughout. My biggest complaint is that I have over 40 pages missing from my book. Page numbers jumped and then the same group of pages was duplicated. I haven't seen any other complaints similar so maybe I just got a faulty book?

I am utilizing this book as an addition to my MCAT Prep for additional questions and I love Next Step. I also use their Chemistry and Physics timed question review as well and the questions are very helpful.

good questions but has no passages, only good for review not practice for MCAT

Disciplines like strategy, leadership development, and innovation are the sexier aspects of being at the helm of a successful business; actually getting things done never seems quite as glamorous. But as Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan demonstrate in Execution, the ultimate difference between a company and its competitor is, in fact, the ability to execute. Execution is "the missing link between aspirations and results," and as such, making it happen is the business leader's most important job. While failure in today's business environment is often attributed to other causes, Bossidy and Charan argue that the biggest obstacle to success is the absence of execution. They point out that without execution, breakthrough thinking on managing change breaks down, and they emphasize the fact that execution is a discipline to learn, not merely the tactical side of business. Supporting this with stories of the "execution difference" being won (EDS) and lost (Xerox and Lucent), the authors describe the building blocks--leaders with the right behaviors, a culture that rewards execution, and a reliable system for having the right people in the right jobs--that need to be in place to manage the three core business processes of people, strategy, and operations. Both Bossidy, CEO of Honeywell International, Inc., and Charan, advisor to corporate executives and author of such books as What the CEO Wants You to Know and Boards That Work, present experience-tested insight into how the smooth linking of these three processes can differentiate one company from the rest. Developing the discipline of execution isn't made out to be simple, nor is this book a quick, easy read. Bossidy and Charan do, however, offer good advice on a neglected topic, making Execution a smart business leader's guide to enacting success rather than permitting demise. --S. Ketchum

Bossidy, an award-winning executive at General Electric and Allied Signal, came out of retirement to tend to Honeywell (and bring it back to prominence) after it failed to merge with General Electric. Charan has taught at Harvard and Kellogg Business Schools. Collaborating with editor and writer Burck, they present the viewpoint that execution (that is, linking a company's people, strategy, and operations) is what will determine success in today's business world. Bossidy and Charan aver that execution is a discipline integral to strategy, that it is the major job of any business leader hoping not just to be a success but to dominate a market, and that it is a core element of corporate culture. Details of both successful and unsuccessful executions at corporations such as Dell, Johnson & Johnson, and Xerox, to name a few, support not only their how-to method for bringing execution to the forefront but also the need for it. Each author addresses specific topics in paragraphs that begin with either "Larry" or "Ram," and this easy style adds to the appeal of a very readable book. I try to be very fair to business books, but I didn't even finish reading this one because it was so elementary and ridiculous. I almost vomited after reading the words "execute" and "execution" a hundred times in the first chapter. This is one of many books written by formerly successful business people who feel the need (for posterity and/or outright arrogance) to take a five-page concept and spread it out over a few hundred pages. If you can master this simple principle, you don't need to read this book: Once you have a great plan or idea, you need to implement it effectively. To not effectively implement your great plan or idea, is a waste of a good plan or idea. That's it folks. The rest of this book is double-talk and business "war stories". The rest of the book is so pointless, you'd be better off spending the time with your family, or reading a different book.

This is severely dated at this point, and their knowledge of how IBM was run under Sam Palmisano is woefully incorrect. If you can ignore the first 3rd of the book, the other two thirds focusing on strategy and people processes are great. They all have to be in sync to move forward, but gone are the days of the line manager being pushed down from above to make all the decisions, instead it is up to the players to make the decisions.

For the Christmas Holidays, as we were packing the ski stuff from the basement before we left to VT, I chanced upon some books lying there, and noticed the one titled 'Execution,' by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan which I had bought almost 8 years ago but never got around to reading it. On a whim, I decided to take it with me and ended up reading it through these holidays.A quick caveat to put aside. I do wish folks would not use company names as examples in books. The original one of these, "In Search of Excellence" by Tom Peters did that. So did Jim Collins in "Good to Great". And this book does it too. What happens is that the authors use some company as an example to cite either a good or a bad practice. And a decade has passed and things have changed (perhaps 180 degrees). And that induces a chuckle in addition to both dating the book and casting doubt on the claim. However, at least for this book, 'Execution', the above is only a caveat, since I found the book quite meaningful. The reason I perhaps did not read it when I first bought it many years ago is that it felt genuinely elementary. I was at the peak of my strategy work and when you are working on projects that are either reshaping a company or positioning oneself in new markets, the discipline of execution seems not only boring, but downright waste of time (not the importance of it mind you, but rather spending time thinking or reading about it). However, now that I have moved on from the strategy function myself and am in a line management role with accountability for business results and accountability for a team and partner-relationships to deliver those results, I view this book in an entirely new light! To share a personal reaction as I read this book ( a feeling I have not had since when I sat for my twelfth grade board examination!) - when I thought about implementing the ideas that Larry and Ram were talking about in their book on Tuesday morning Jan 2nd when I return to work, my stomach tightens into a knot! The level of sustained focus, discipline, follow through, attention to detail they expect in execution is non-trivial to say the least. Again, conceptually easy to grasp; but quite daunting if one thinks about putting them into real practice on a sustained basis throughout an organization!Very briefly, they touch upon the strategic, people and operational processes as three core processes that are building blocks for execution and show how the three are related to each other. And through their experience and examples demonstrate how to implement each of these effectively. One particular insight that I liked that Larry made in particular was, 'just because an executive is good in her current job, does not mean she is ready or capable for the next'. Which is similar to what our Chairman says, "do the job you have been assigned, not your previous one."Of course with a background in engineering (and manufacturing to boot), this whole notion of execution and organizing to execute is not alien to me at all. And in reality, my immersion for a long time in strategic work was what I needed to be more lithe in my thinking. However executing by one self or with a small team in a localized way on a specific deterministic engineering problem is one challenge. But to do the same with large revenues and large teams at stake and working through your teams through other teams with high week-to-week dependence on market conditions is another challenge. This timely book was very worthwhile spending time with. Dated examples notwithstanding, one of the more immediately useful and relevant books in the business genre that I have read in a long time.

Bossidy and Charan dive into the critical gap of getting things done in this management classic. Focused on execution, the authors discuss the critical components for leadership within an execution/get stuff done environment. Pointing out the failures of hands off management, ivory tower thinking and micromanagement, the emphasis is on those critical elements that combine the what needs to be done and who needs to do it to execute on a business strategy or operational plan. The critical linking of strategy, operations and people is the role of the business leader, and in order to accomplish that critical mission, the leader must be meaningfully involved in those three elements - not micromanaging them, but leading them to efficient execution. The leader's most important job is the selection and appraising of the people in the organization, and this element should consume the bulk of their efforts and should never be delegated. The leader must embrace this role and thrive in it to ensure proper execution of the strategy and operations. The combination of people and strategy lead to an operating plan, in which the execution takes place. This plan needs to be realistic, ambitious, resourced, specific and accountable. The authors note that this piece is often the art that falls short - where the operating plan is divorced from the strategy and people - and the execution suffers. The book has critical questions and suggestions for the leader, and provides a platform for thought that is focused on getting things done rather than just the what and who theory of planning. An important read.

Projects fail on execution.Execution is the difference between success and just trying.Typically, companies and individuals don't know how to execute.A well-executed book about execution. Loved it.
